Harness horse races were held at the Washington Harness Track in South Tacoma on Highway 99 near the McChord Field Junction until 1953 when racing meets were denied because the tract was too close to Longacres. This is one of the first races of the 1948 season which began on July 10. Events were held on weekends with seven races each day. Drivers included both men and women from Washington and Portland, Oregon. Although the half-mile track was seen as competing with Longacres, it lacked the same amenities. In 1948, the paramutual board is a simple chalk board where race results are posted. The judges stand at the finish line is an open platform where an announcer calls the race over a public address system suspended from a utility pole. (T.N.T., 7/15/1948, p.21).
