Showroom at City Motor Company, Oldsmobile, Anson Hart. The new 1948 model Oldsmobile offered many new developments: a streamlined body design with increased front and rear visibility with curved glass, wider seats, more luxurious upholstery and interior trim. Grain elevator, Port of Tacoma, George Osgood. A $500,000 bond issue was authorized in 1930 to provide funds for what became one of the major wheat handling terminals on the Pacific Coast. A subsequent addition to the grain elevator in 1947 brought the capacity to 1.1 million bushels. Another 500,000 addition was added in 1951. The unit was equipped with 3 receiving legs having a capacity of 100 cars per day and 2 shipping legs providing ship delivery at a maximum rate of 30,000 bushels an hour. Full-length shot of Margie Joy Miller for Beauty-of-the-Week, Times, Mrs. McDonald. Margie Joy Miller, the daughter of George W. and Eunice Miller, was starring in the Little Theater play "Janie" at this time. She was described by critics as a potential Janis Paige. Margie (also spelled Marjie), after graduating from Stephens College, would embark on an acting career in the fifties as Marjie Millar. Her career was cut short by an automobile accident in the late fifties that left her partially crippled. (T.Times, 1/17/1948) TPL-8200

Gretchen Fraser points out her name in the decorations during a Tacoma Athletic Commission reception in honor of her victory at the 1948 Winter Olympics. Husband Don Fraser, a former Olympian, is to her right in this April 5, 1948, photo. Gretchen, the daughter of W.A. and Clara Kunigk, was also welcomed back home as she rode in the weekend's Daffodil Parade. She had won both gold and silver medals in Alpine during the Winter Olympics which were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland. ALBUM 9.

Showing of 1949 Lincolns, Robert Sconce Advertising Agency. Three of the new 1949 model Lincolns are parked in the showroom. The Lincoln Cosmopolitan and the Lincoln represented the latest concept in luxurious motoring with wider wheelbases (125" for the Cosmopolitan and 121" for the Lincoln). The automobiles were wider to provide road-hugging comfort. The paint on the new automobiles is highly reflective as well as the large amounts of chrome. A neon sign points the way to a cashier. New Ford truck at Carstens' garage, Titus Motor Company, Henry Zachow. Titus Motor Company was the authorized Ford Truck distributor in the Tacoma area. Carstens had a large fleet of trucks not all of which were Fords. They had at least two refrigerated trucks built on Chevrolet chassis.

On March 5, 1948, Jack Chase (left) and Roy Hawkins worked out in a Tacoma gym to prepare for their upcoming fights at the Armory on March 11. Jack Chase was one of the cleverest light-heavies of boxing in the late 1940s. He had been the number one contender for a long spell but had just about retired from the ring. He would meet Fred Wallace in an 8-round semi final. Roy Hawkins was scheduled to face Cecil Oliver for 10 rounds on the same ticket. Chase had joined the Hawkins stable as Roy Hawkins' trainer and coach. (T.Times, 3/9/1948, p.7)

The Jason Lee school choir is seated on the stage at Temple Theater. Dignitaries are seated in front of them. A piano sits to the left side of the stage. Rev. Francis Kinch, pastor of Epworth Methodist Church spoke. Members of the Ivanhoe Commandry, Knights Templar, are seen seated in the first several rows of the theater. Gretchen Kunigk Fraser, winner of Gold and Silver medals at the 1948 Winter Olympics, waves to thousands of spectators viewing the April, 1948 Daffodil Parade. She is wearing her U.S. team uniform and her familiar blond pigtails. Gretchen was the first American skier to medal in a Winter Olympic event with a win in slalom and a silver in the Alpine combined at St. Mortiz. Her parents, W.A. and Clara Kunigk, ride along surrounded by mounds of daffodils. Gretchen won Gold on the Kunigk's 35th Anniversary. The Tacoma Girl Scouts held a Fashion Revue at the Temple Theater on March 20, 1948. The proceeds would benefit the St. Alban's Girl Scout Camp. The Girl Scouts showed traditional and new scouting clothes as well as sports outfits and fashion clothes furnished by Rhodes Brothers Department Store. Background music was provided by Arnold Levenenze at the organ. Four young girls and boys wearing their Sunday best and two teenage girls wearing two-piece bathing suits wait in the sidelines, with four women organizers, for their turn on the runway. Buildings, churches, schools, and parks made for special edition of Times, studio. Originally built in 1921 as the residence of the J.P. Weyerhaeusers and called "Haddaway Hall", the home was purchased by George C. Franklin in 1936 and the name was changed to "Seamont". In 1941 a proposal arose for Annie Wright Seminary to move to Haddaway Hall but this did not happen. From 1942-1968 the building served as the Tacoma Catholic College and convent. From 1969 until 1972 it was used as a dormitory for University of Puget Sound students called Commencement Bay Campus Dormitory and in 1974 it became the Northwest Baptist Seminary.

Action shot, Patsy Hamm and Jack Boyce. Times, Metcalf. Patsy Hamm and Jack Boyle were the Pacific Coast Jr. Pairs Champions in figure skating's jumping pairs. They had qualified for the Nationals at Colorado Springs, Colorado, March 31st, April 1st, 2nd and 3rd. They are shown practicing at Lakewood Ice Arena. Patsy and Jack played a major role in the ice show the evening of March 20th. The proceeds went towards their expenses to the Nationals. Patsy and Jack learned to skate at the Lakewood Figure Skating Club. It was reported in April that Patsy and Jack placed 4th in the Junior Pairs in Colorado. Painted on the cab door is, "Maxell Petroleum Company, Tacoma - BR.3188". Chrome on the grill of the hood reflects the headlamps and a large hood ornament sits atop the grill. The split-windshield is made of two panes of flat glass. Rear-view mirrors stick out on both sides of the cab, a large horn is attached to the top and a flag is hung at the back corner of the cab. A Union Oil storage tank is in the background.

The family poses in the Johnson's living room. Sitting on her grandfather's lap is his only grandchild, Sandra Elisabet Benoy, age 3. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson's two daughters and their husbands are next to their parents. They are Mrs. Marvin Eklund and Mrs. Robert Benoy. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson came to Tacoma from Sweden in 1910. Dinner party honoring Alexander Baillie at Tacoma Country & Golf Club, Tribune, E. Knight. Alexander Baillie was one of the founders of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club in 1894 and was the club's first president. He is seen in the upper left corner next to Reno Odlin, then president of Puget Sound National Bank, holding a microphone as part of his toastmaster duties. The banquet held in his honor was expected to draw more than 150 guests.

Several operations in plant, Tacoma Lumber Fabricating, Mr. Patterson. Young men work alongside older men in creating the structural beams for which Tacoma Lumber Fabricating was well known. The company created prefabricated portions of buildings for an entire prefabricated house as well as curved beams used to roof large buildings. The top floor of their modern office building was the plant loft for giant layout work. They had a complete sawmill and planing mill plant. (T.Times, 1/16/1949, p.18)

Stacks of lumber are seen further back in the plant's yard. The company manufactured materials from heavy timbers such as power line cross arms, bridge timbers and roof trusses to little pieces four feet long for refrigerator car rack slabs. This view of the new shoe store, taken from the back of the store, shows the chairs back-to-back, ready for customers to take a seat and be fitted for shoes.
