The Tuberculosis League of Pierce County announced that a mobile X-Ray unit would be in Tacoma for ten days starting July 15, 1947, for the purpose of giving X-Rays to as many as wanted to have them. Here a female technician handles the X-Ray machine for a man who has come in for a free chest X-Ray. Chest X-Rays were an important tool for the early detection of tuberculosis. In the 1940s tuberculosis was still a major cause of death in the United States. Effective drug treatment was not available until the 1950s. (T.Times, 7/12/1947, p.3)
