Eighty-seven-year-old Rudy Anderson has earned the privelege of sacking out for a snooze in the middle of the Old Fashioned Senior Picnic held at Five Mile Lake County Park Thursday. He had just finished a lunch of barbecued hamburger and the Navy Band of Seattle had begun to play. Hundreds of seniors from around the area attended and activities included games and drawings as well.

As a submarine approaches from the right, protestor Sallie Shawl lets her feeling be known to passersby on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge shortly before noon today. Shawl had been tipped off that the passing sub might prove to be a Trident class unit, which it apparently was not. None-the-less, Shawl noted that even Non-Trident subs have nuclear weapons capabilities so the protestor continues her display. When a Washington State Patrol officer stopped on the bridge to scoot Shawl away (saying she had been warned twice to leave the bridge) his car set in motion a three-car rear-ender that resulted in more than minor damage to a car driven by Greg Splett, 19, of Bremerton. Splett's car was the last in line to be involved in the accident. The middle vehicle, a small pick-up driven by John Lee, 43, of Gig Harbor also received damage. The lead car, driven by a woman I didn't get the name of, received apparently little or no damage. A classic object lesson in A CAUSE AND AN EFFECT.

--Up, Up Goes the Viaduct--
Rapid progress is being made on the SR 512 viaduct at Puyallup, Joe Michel, assistant project engineer for the State Highway Department, reported Wednesday. The concrete bridge over East Pioneer and Main avenues and the Puyallup River is being erected by Dale M. Madden Construction, Inc., Seattle, under a $1.8 million contract. The west span is going up now and its twin will be constructed under a future contract. (news 06/17/1971)

--High-rise Curb Splits Interstate 5--
Work on a concrete divider strip separating the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 has progressed from North Ft. Lewis to 56th Street in Tacoma. The project will be complete when the divider is in place all the way to the Puyallup River bridge. Most of the divider is made of pre-cast concrete, although some sections are poured on the spot. The project also includes illumination in some spots. Division of the freeway adds up to a $2,320,000 contract for Woodworth & Co., Inc., of Tacoma.
