MAYOR -012

ca. 1993. Jack Hyde was elected mayor of Tacoma November 7, 1993. He died January 17, 1994, shortly after taking office. Dr. Hyde, a former city councilman, had been a professor at Tacoma Community College from the school's opening day in 1965. He had retired from teaching in December of 1993 to take on the $40,000 mayor's post. Dr. Hyde, a geologist, had served on the Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health, Pierce Transit board, Puget Sound Water Quality Authority, Tacoma Planning Commission and several other agencies. He had defeated incumbent mayor Karen Vialle with about 60% of the vote. Fellow councilman Harold Moss would be appointed mayor until the 1995 elections. ALBUM 16. (Seattle Times, 1-18-94, p. ca. 1982. Doug Sutherland was elected mayor of Tacoma Nov. 7, 1981 and served two terms from 1982 to 1990. Born in Helena, Montana, Mr. Sutherland is a graduate of Central Washington University. Prior to and during his time as a city councilman and mayor, he owned Tacoma Tent & Awning Co. While mayor, Mr. Sutherland worked to clean up Tacoma's air and the Commencement Bay Superfund site. He was involved in the historic Puyallup land claims settlement, restoration of Union Station and the Pantages and construction of the Tacoma Dome. With his help, the University of Washington-Tacoma and the new Washington State Historical Museum were initiated. Mr. Sutherland became the first city manager of Sea-Tac after his last mayoral term expired with his imput being vital in the creation of a fully functioning city. He returned to Pierce County as Pierce County Executive from January 1993 to December 2000. Mr. Sutherland is now the Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands. ALBUM 16. The President was on a two-day, four-state campaign swing which included a brief, activity-packed three-hour stay in Tacoma. President Carter was the ninth president to visit Tacoma while holding the nation's top office. The last president to visit was John F. Kennedy almost seventeen years before. He made appearances before senior citizens, blue-collar employees, campaign workers, and Democratic well-wishers. President Carter is pictured above speaking to an unidentified man; this may have been at the Bicentennial Pavilion where a reception was held in his honor.

Jimmy Carter was only the ninth president to visit Tacoma while holding the country's top office. He arrived on Tuesday, September 23, 1980, for a three-hour whirlwind tour. Newsmen and cameramen are ready to record the President; other cameras are apparently pointed toward the several hundreds of people amassed to greet him. Scheduled to meet the President were Lt. Gov. John Cherberg (in place of Gov.
