Stadium Water Carnival, Times, Phillips. Eight members of the Royal Fins are performing a synchronized swimming routine all going one direction in a line. Miss Helen Gladston, at center in white, leads the Stadium High School Royal Fins synchronized swimming team through a practice session. On March 19, 1949, they took part in the state swim meet at the University of Washington. The girls on the team were selected for their ability to perform precision aquatic maneuvers to music. Tacoma Vocational-Technical School offered training for all types of trades. In 1949 there were 500 students in attendance with 1,400 more as apprentices. Here six men are learning to install and repair utility lines in the electrical lineman trade, one of 50 trades offered. The three students at left are identified as (in no particular order) Ed Sorger, Jr., George Blanc and Tom Padden. Strapped securely by lineman's belts, some are working on transformers on genuine, although shortened, poles. The Tacoma Vocational-Technical School was operated by the Tacoma public school system in compliance with the state plan for vocational education. Julie is the daughter of Earl and Leona Craig, owners and operators of Woodbrook Riding Academy. Mr. Reizner wears a leather apron to protect himself and his clothing. Old Timers nite at Elks Club, Harry Lynch. All members of the Elks with 25 years or more service were honored with dinner at the Elks Club on January 26, 1949. After dinner the Old Timers marched to the lodge room and, after a short business session, they were treated to a two-hour professional vaudeville show and surprises. More than 400 members and their guests were expected. A band sits at the edge of the floor for the performance. A stuffed elk stands by one of the exits and a mounted elk head is over one of the doors at the rear on the room. Murals decorate the walls. (T.Times, 1/24/1949, p.2)

Exterior of Ingleside Apartments, Tom Lowry Company. The apartment building was built in 1909 and was the "first large apartment built here" according to the Tacoma Daily Ledger in 1931. The Ingleside Apartments had 56 units. The alternate address was 515-17 No. 2nd St. The exterior of the building is nearly covered with vines whose leaves are off during the winter weather. The Tom Lowry Company handled real estate. TPL-4581.

Machinery at Northwest Door Company, American Marietta Co., Henry Presessor. Large bags of dry, powdered adhesives are placed near a mixer at Northwest Door Company. The bag in the foreground is being moved by an overhead carrier. The glues used in the manufacture of plywood gave it strength and, as non-soluble glues were developed, plywood became weatherproof.

Tacoma Drug Company, interior and exterior of new offices, Tacoma Drug Co., Fred Osmers. The wholesale drug company had completed a new warehouse and offices on the Tacoma tideflats and were now stocking the 60,000 square feet of warehousing. The modern facilities were well lit. On the right can be seen their system for moving goods from the back of the warehouse in large tubs on a counter made of continuous rollers. Empty tubs could be returned to the back of the warehouse using an overhead conveyor.

Lou Plante was president of the Tacoma Gun Club when it sponsored the Washington Birthday Classic held on Saturday and Sunday, February 19 & 20, 1949 at the club on Highway 99 in Lakewood. Shooters came to Tacoma for the annual shoot from all parts of the Northwest and parts of California. A keen trap man, Mr. Plante was a life member of the Tacoma Gun Club. He moved to Tacoma in 1911, and was a member of the Plaster Contractors Association. (T.Times, 2/19/1949, p.5)

At 11:55 a.m. on April 13, 1949, Western Washington was rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The areas affected by the earthquake included Seattle, Tacoma, Puyallup, Port Angeles, Portland and Vancouver, B. C. and tremors were also felt as far as Idaho. In Puyallup, Cecil L. Archer checked out what was left of an automobile buried under rubble that fell from an adjacent building during the earthquake. Mr. Archer was Puyallup's chief of police from 1946-1963. The area in question was about a block from the old Pacific Northwest Canning Co. building seen in the background at 203 5th Ave. N.W. This was a scene repeated throughout the affected areas. Big Six Service was owned by M. A. Martin, they were located at 3826 Sixth Avenue. Big Six offered their customers a full service gas station with a repair shop, fuel oil, battery and tire service, radios and electrical appliances. Birchfield Boiler company were builders of all steel welded vessels of all types and designs. Birchfield fabricated the steel used in their ship building and also specialized in ship repairs and conversions. In 1949 the Pacific Northwest had the worst earthquake that has ever been recorded. Eight people were killed, including one little boy from Tacoma; although many building suffered some destruction no buildings were completely demolished. The 16th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival began with the coronation of the 1949 Daffodil Queen, and included activities such as flower shows, parades, yacht racing and ski races. Spectators are several feet deep while viewing the Young Men Business Club daffodil float which advertised the club's 25th anniversary. This float received 3rd prize in the service clubs float category (T.N.T., 4/10/49, p. 1, 12 & B-6).

Puyallup Coordinating Council was working with the local and regional American Red Cross disaster relief services to bring assistance to their residents after the big April 13, 1949 earthquake. Red Cross would be using recently collected funds from their annual fund raising campaign to assist with community needs in Pierce County. The National Red Cross would be helping the communities affected by yesterday's earthquake as well, including those in Washington, Oregon and Idaho (T.N.T., 4/21/49, p. B-4).

Tradition still ruled the fashion of Red Cross dress in March of 1949 when these surgical dressings workers were photographed for an article in the Tacoma News Tribune. They are all wearing white uniforms, with a veil centered in a little embroidered cross of red. March was American Red Cross month and the Tacoma-Pierce County chapter was getting ready to begin its 1949 fund raising campaign. Caught by the camera organizing surgical supplies for military hospitals were: (l to r) Leona McCune, Lucille Branchflower, Eleanora Price, Jessie K. Bacon and Eleanore Bertheau. (T.
