1968 Daffodil Festival Queen. Cheryl Lamka, 17-year-old Stadium High School senior, was chosen to reign over the 1968 Daffodil Festival during April 1, 1968, ceremonies at Spartan Hall in Sumner. Governor Dan Evans had the honor of crowning the new queen. She posed for her formal portrait holding a bouquet of daffodils and ferns and clutching a brass scepter. Queen Cheryl I is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Dewane Lamka and the youngest of four children. She was very active in high school, as Wilson High School annual editor, Girls Club service department head, and member of the Stadiana and Triple S, all while holding down a 3.97 grade point average. The 165-foot aluminum-hulled boat was the eighth in a series of twelve patrol gunboats built for the Navy by Tacoma Boat Building. It would probably be deployed off the coast of Vietnam. The stern of the USS Tacoma. The USS Tacoma was successfully launched, bow-first, into the waters of Commencement Bay on April 13, 1968. The PG-92 was the eighth in a series of twelve Asheville Class patrol gunboats being built by Tacoma Boat Building for the U.S. Navy. (formerly Provident Bldg.), Bank of California with its ionic columns, and the massive Washington Bldg. on the corner are clearly visible.

1968 Daffodil parade. Throngs of spectators are bundled up against a cold, brisk wind as they watch the 35th annual Daffodil Festival parade roll down Pacific Avenue on April 6, 1968. Float #13, decorated in golden daffodils, is the St. Regis Paper Co. entry, "King Midas' Golden Touch," which won the Mayor's trophy for best use of the parade's namesake flower. St. Regis was a perennial award-winning entrant in the parade. The 1968 parade was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had been assassinated two days before. 1968 Daffodil parade. Yabba dabba do! The Flintstones, #22, won the Daffodilian trophy for most humorous entry in the 35th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival held on April 6, 1968. Fred is perched atop a hardworking dinosaur at the quarry while baby Pebbles and her mom, Wilma, scoot along in steamroller car, pedaled by foot-power. Baby Bam-Bam visits outside the Flintstones home. The colorful float, one of 26 in the parade, was entered by the Tacoma Vocational-Technical Institute. The festival's theme was "Tales & Legends." Float #3 from the Pierce County Senior 4-H was entitled "Days of Old," reflecting the 1968 Daffodil Festival theme of "Tales & Legends." Over 20,000 golden daffodils befitting the aptly named "Golden Tales of Beauty" decorated the 1968 Princess float created by the City of Puyallup's Puyallup Junior Woman's Club. Princesses Inese Verzemnieks, Mardel Johnson, Judy Ehlers and Jennifer Anderson gracefully acknowledged the crowds lined up along Pacific Avenue on April 6, 1968. In step for the March 19, 1968, opening day of the 21st Tacoma Home Show are promotor Pat O'Toole, Miss Home Show Barbara Slott, and developer Boyd Lundstrom. O'Toole had promised a different kind of home show in 1968 as he replaced more than half the previous exhibitors. Nothing that did not directly pertain to actually building or equipping a home would be allowed. This would be a "Red Carpet" event as for the first time, the entire floor of the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse would be covered by thousands of yards of red carpet. Anticipation ran high for attendance in the hundreds of thousands as free tickets would be distributed by local banks and utility companies. Photograph ordered by National Home Shows. La Mansard 1968 Model Home. The Tacoma Home Show traditionally had two or more Model Homes open to the public. In 1968, one of the homes was the "La Mansard," located in the open space University Place neighborhood of Beckonridge. Located at 9038 Ridgeview Circle, off 47th St. and Grandview, it was built by the Ray Dally Construction Co., who had built several homes in Beckonridge. The two-story luxory home had exterior walls of horizontal rough-sawn 1 x 6 lumber that were darkly stained. Its mansard, grooved roof had red cedar shingles which were uncolored. The four bedroom "La Mansard" was built on a wooded lot high on a hill with a view of the Olympic Mountains. The 2400 square foot home had a gently curving driveway leading to a two-car garage; it cost approximately $36,000. Photograph ordered by Home Builders Association of Greater Tacoma. Bedroom in 1968 Model Home. The "Barcelona," located in the Westgate subdivision, was one of the Model Homes open to the public at the 21st Tacoma Home Show in March, 1968. Built by builder Bud Crest, it was located at 2824 Claremont Dr., off Pearl at No. 28th St. Prior to the opening of the Home Show, photographs were taken of the model home's exterior and interior. One of the home's three bedrooms, pictured above, was spacious enough to hold a double bed, large chest of drawers and bedside drawers. This could be used as a guest bedroom. There is an unusual lamp created out of a doll displayed on the large chest of drawers. The "Barcelona," built in a modified Mediterranean design, was constructed out of rough-sawn plywood. As publicity for the March 1968 Tacoma Home Show, Barbara Slott, recently crowned Miss Home Show, posed in front of a giant shamrock at the Display & Costume Co., 728 Broadway. The 18-year-old Aquinas Academy senior was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Slott, 6018 Hillcrest Dr. SW, Lakewood. The 21st Home Show at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse opened on March 19 and ran through the 24th. Attendance, due to the thousands of free tickets from various banks and utility companies, was expected to exceed 500,000. The 1968 theme was "Name of the Game is Living." Drew Foss (2nd from L) is joined by his mother and father, Agnes and Henry Foss and Anthony J. Martinolich (farthest L) during the launching of the towboat Claudia Foss on February 24, 1968, at Martinolich Shipbuilding's Taylor Way yard. The 80-foot vessel was built for Foss Launch & Tug and had a 25-foot beam. It was the first of two towboats being built for Foss; the second, another 80-foot vessel, was scheduled for a May launching. The Fosses kept the tradition of naming their boats after members of the family; the Claudia Foss was named for the daughter-in-law of Barbara Foss Campbell, Wedell Foss' daughter. The little tug, the Brynn Foss, trails after the newly launched towboat, the Claudia Foss, on February 24, 1968. The 80-foot vessel was built by Martinolich Shipbuilding for Foss Launch & Tug and slipped into the water at its Taylor Way yard. Her keel was laid on December 1, 1967. Delivery of the vessel was scheduled for April 1st. The Claudia Foss was the first of two 80-foot boats being built for Foss with the second, the Martha Foss, scheduled for a May 15, 1968, launching. She was named for Mrs. Duncan (Claudia) Campbell, daughter-in-law of Barbara Foss Campbell. (TNT 2-25-68, A-8)

The Tacoma chapter was hosting the three-day convention. The function of the club is to study and discuss traffic and transport matters. The Hooper Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1959 to further the education of women in the field of traffic and transportation; the 1966-67 scholarship winner would be presented at the conference. Preparations are being made for the launching of the 177-foot tuna seiner, the "City of Panama" on February 3, 1968. She would be sliding down the ways at Port Industrial Yard. Built by Tacoma Boatbuilding for Roland Virissimo of San Diego, the "City of Panama" was the second in the Blue Pacific class to be launched in two weeks, after "Bold Venture" on January 20th. The "City of Panama" was powered by a 2,075-horsepower electromotive diesel and could carry up to 925 tons of tuna. She would be used to fish in the waters near Puerto Rico. The second annual Red Rose Cotillion, sponsored by the Unique Social & Community Club, was held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel on December 22, 1967. The debutantes being introduced to society were all graduates of Stadium High School and all were attending college. In attendance were : (standing at top, left to right) Brenda Jackson, Gloria Austin; (standing on floor left to right) Donna Dorsey, Rose Underwood; (seated left to right) Roberta Morris, Audrey Capers; (standing on floor at right) Gwendolyn Lang, Marcia McDaniel. Following the girls' promenade and first waltz with their fathers, a stately minuet was performed by the debutantes and their escorts. Launching of the "Jeanette C." Built by Tacoma Boatbuilding, the tuna clipper "Jeanette C" was launched on June 6, 1967 at Tacoma Boatbuilding's Plant 2 in the Port Industrial Yard. 1967 Daffodil Festival Queen. Carol Parcheta, 17, of Franklin Pierce High School became the 1967 Daffodil Festival Queen as she was crowned by Lt. Gov. John Cherberg on April 3, 1967 in Spartan Hall, Sumner. She was Carol II as there was a previous Queen Carol, 1959's Carol Mills also of Franklin Pierce. Miss Parcheta, shown above holding the symbols of her new office, was a song leader at her high school. She would continue her education at the University of Puget Sound. (TNT 4-4-67, p. 1)

In 1967 Howard Draine (center) was the proud owner of a new Union 76 service station at 2501 South 12th Street. Mayor Harold Tollefson (second from right) was on hand for the grand opening of the Howard's 76 Service Station on April 22, 1967. He is shown preparing to do the honors at the official ribbon cutting. In 1977 the service station was taken over by Clifford Hootkooper and became Cliff's Union 76. 1967 Daffodil Parade. Though the sun may have been lacking and the wind cold, people still poured out to fill the sidewalks and nearby office buildings for a view of the 1967 Puyallup Valley Daffodil parade as it meandered through the streets of downtown Tacoma. Among the many floats on April 8, 1967, was the Lakewood Unlimited entry entitled "Flight of Fancy." Swooping on butterfly wings were the four princesses of the Lakewood Summer Festival, Sally Fiss and Chris Hickson of Clover Park High School and Patsy Thompson and Ann Harris of Lakes High. The Lakewood float was one of 31 floats that had entered the parade. It was the first prize winner among unincorporated communities. (TNT 4-8-67, A-1, TNT 4-9-67, B-3)

1967 Daffodil Parade. The U.S. Navy Seabees celebrated their 25th anniversary with a magnificent float of golden daffodils entitled "Thailand Fantasy." In addition to the thousands of daffodils making up the body of the float, it was decorated with ornate golden symbols of the Far East. The 60-foot moving scroll on the 55-foot float depicts the aid being given by the Seabees to the people of Thailand. Winner of the President's Trophy, the Seabees float had previously won the Grand Marshal's Award in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade.
