Mrs. Bruce Ferguson, club social chairman; Mrs. William Brown, Jr., wife of the club president, and Mrs. V.A. Schwarz, wife of the membership chairman and co-chair of the luau, are pictured above holding a collection of leis, grass skirt and flowered muumuu. The June 26, 1965, luau and dance would honor the club's new members. Exotic Polynesian food and South Sea Island music would entertain members, along with the Samoan Fire Dance. Close up photo of a section of an old growth Douglas fir, almost 13 feet in diameter as measured by the U.S. Forest Service, installed outside of the new Flora B. Tenzler Memorial Library, one of the branches of the Pierce County Library system, in Lakewood. The old growth tree was logged on the holdings of the Northwest Door Company near Packwood in 1946. The 586-year-old tree was determined to be the largest Douglas fir felled by man The cross section of fir used to stand outside the entrance of the Northwest Door Company at 1203 East D Street when Herman E. Exterior - Perkins Haven of Rest. The beautifully landscaped grounds of Perkins Haven of Rest provide a soothing and peaceful atmosphere for the Gig Harbor mortuary. A bevy of ducks glide along the"Pool of Reflection" near the mortuary's driveway. A variety of trees and shrubs decorate the property. The lawn-type columbarium, located four miles north on the Bremerton Highway, was a combination Tudar Gothic and contemporary design. Wet and muddy conditions do not postpone construction of the new J.C. Penney store at the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center in the summer of 1965. Penney's had decided to vacate its longtime main store in downtown Tacoma to move to the new Tacoma Mall Shopping Center which offered plenty of free parking and easy access from the nearby freeway. Group portrait of Roman Meal executives on May 12, 1965, in front of company headquarters. William P. Matthaei, chairman of the board, is extreme right, front row. Roman Meal Co. was founded by Dr. Robert George Jackson of Tacoma in 1910 who, in an effort to cure his ailing health, developed a health bread based on the diet of Roman legionnaires. Garrett Freightlines sign. An enormous "G" stands on top of a Garrett Freightlines sign on company property in July, 1965. A view of Mount Rainier is framed between the sign poles. Garrett Freightlines was listed in the 1965 City Directory as being in the transportation business; it was located on Port of Tacoma Rd. It was a family-run business with C.A. Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Construction has been completed on the new Tacoma Country & Golf Club in August, 1965. Built on two levels, the new (third) clubhouse replaced a 50-year-old structure. Coincidentally, both the original clubhouse and its replacement, known as the "Grand Old Lady," were destroyed by fires. The Tacoma Country & Golf Club, on the shores of American Lake, is the oldest continuing country club west of the Mississippi. Photograph ordered by the Weyerhaeuser Co.

Exterior of fire station #9. Fire Station #9 moved from its longtime location on No. Pine St. to 3502 Sixth Ave. in 1965. The modern one-story was a three bay frame designed by architects James Harris and William R. Reed. Emerging from one of the bays is the battalion chief's car; two fire engines are also side-by-side. The fire station would be dedicated on June 24, 1965. It was built with 1963 bond issue funds. A unique stone walkway leads to the recessed entrance of this unidentified brick-and-wood home in July, 1965. A non-traditional chimney tops the shake roof. A short hedge is designed to curve along the walkway.

McKinley Park Christian Church. Located near E. 40th & Spokane St., the McKinley Park Christian Church had been a presence in the neighborhood for nearly fifty years. The brick-and-wooden church was topped with a white steeple. It had a slanted ramp for those unable to walk up the small stairs. According to the 1965 City Directory, the Rev. Marvel D. A solitary man appears to be enjoying the peacefulness of the rippling stream and quiet majesty of the towering trees in the Lewiston, Idaho, area on July 13, 1965. Two Cheney Studs Courteers flash large grins as they palm basketballs on the Wilson High School court on December 2, 1965. Buck's A&W Drive-In celebrated its grand opening Thursday through Saturday, November 4-6, 1965, by offering root beer and soft cones for only 5-cents and hot dogs for a dime. Owned by Robert Gehring, Buck's was located at 5805 Sixth Avenue, between Orchard and Pearl. The last listing for Buck's in Tacoma's City Directory was in 1982. (TNT 11-3-65, A-7)

J.C. Penney's had a gas station and auto center located right next to their new store at the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center in 1965. A 1960 Chevy El Camino truck and a 1965 Ford Mustang are ready to be serviced at the outdoor pumps. Customers and attendants were protected from Northwest weather by the auto center's extended roofline. The auto center and the main store opened on October 13, 1965. Lysle G. Log stacker in action at St. Regis dry-land log-sorting and storage yard, November, 1965. 1965 saw the completion of several modernization projects for St. Regis Paper Co. A 15-acre log-sorting and storage yard was established on part of 35-acres newly created by the filling in of a saltwater log pond. Work continues on the expansion of the Port Industrial Waterway in 1966 as men and equipment are used to extend the waterway to Lincoln Ave., a major roadway in the Tacoma industrial Tideflats area. Water now covers the land area past the Lincoln Ave. railroad bridge due to dredging. The earth is being moved to make way for ocean-going ships. The Port of Tacoma saw major growth in 1965; 96 more ships loaded and unloaded cargo at the Port docks during the first nine months of 1965 than the same time in 1964. 1966 Richards stock footage. View from air on February 1, 1966, shows the new extension of the Port Industrial Waterway in the Tacoma Tideflats. The new cut would extend to Lincoln Ave. Working around-the-clock are General Construction Co. dredges to move the 6000-feet waterway inland. The earth was moved to make way for ocean-going ships. This aerial view of the Tacoma Industrial Airport (now the Tacoma Narrows Airport) on Point Fosdick, looking in a northerly direction, was taken in August of 1966, Gig Harbor is located beyond the right corner. On August 13th the airport sponsored a free air fair featuring: the Goodyear "Blimp", the Columbia; demonstrations of the TideAir "Hello Super Courier", which could take off and land within 100 feet; and a flyby by the new 141 "Starlifter" jet transport. According to an advertisement taken out by the airport and published in the News Tribune, air traffic had been increasing every month at the airport. In 1965, a total of 35,728 take-offs and landings were recorded by airline, military, and general aviation aircraft. (TNT ad, 8/12/1966 p. 12)

Mascot, coaches and baseball players are photographed behind an array of bats in this June of 1966 scene. It may have been taken at Heidelberg Field in Tacoma. The players are all wearing uniforms bearing the logo of the Ben Cheney teams: the Cheney Studs.

The 1966 Cheney Studs basketball team posed for a group picture on March 9, 1966, at the Bellarmine gym. They would soon leave for Denver for their second consecutive appearance at the AAU basketball tournament as the Northwest representative. The team would lose to the top-seeded Armed Forces All Stars. The Studs finished their season with a 23-6 record. Jim Van Beek, #22, led the team in individual scoring for a 21.9 point average. Clint Names, #20, was the total Studs scoring champ at 587 points in 29 games. The Studs were led by player-coach George Grant.
