First meal in new womens' residence hall, College of Puget Sound. Nine of 40 women to live in new quarters gather at table with Carolyn Schneider, housemother, and Dr. and Mrs. Edward Todd, college president. The new hall, named Anderson Hall, was built for $75,000. It would be formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. Names of students are listed in the Tacoma Times article dated February 2, 1939. (T. May 16th was Campus Day at College of Puget Sound in 1939. As part of the festivities, men students dug in and participated in a "tug- of-war" while being sprayed with water.

It's that wacky time again, time for the 12th annual Freshman Stunt Night at the College of Puget Sound, presented under the supervision of the Department of Dramatic Art. History will never be the same after September 20, 1940 when the Freshmen take aim at George Washington, Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse, among others. Pictured left to right are Norma Gagliardi, Walter Ebbett, Aldo Benedetti (kneeling), Kay Copeland, Beverly Birdsall and Jack Miller. The four skits to be presented to students and the public are "George Washington's Life Story, Sort of Chopped Up by the Little Hatchet with which He Carved Out the United States," "Paris, This is It" (the love story of Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse), a Baby Contest and "Spot Cash," the story of a fifty dollar bill as it changes hands. Informal shoveling contest during October, 1940, ground breaking at C.P.S.for new Student Union Building. Mayor Harry Cain, in hat and cigarette in mouth, squats at right center. Norton Clapp is to Cain's left in photo. Norton Clapp served as a trustee of the college (later University) for 62 years, 19 of those as chairman of the board of trustees. Students and invited guests chortle at the sight of the unannounced shoveling contest pitting Bishop Bruce Baxter of Willamette University, C.P.S. president Edward H. Todd, Board of Trustees president E.L. Blaine and trustee Albert H. Hooker, Jr., on October 16, 1940. The contest was diplomatically declared a draw. Trustee Hooker was disqualified because his first shovelful of dirt fell on Dr. Todd's neck. Norton Clapp would go on to win the actual 4-man shoveling contest, besting Mayor Cain, the student body president and Chamber of Commerce president. Ground breaking ceremonies at C.P.S. for new Student Union Building. A group of coeds with shovels take their turn during Homecoming Week in October, 1940. The Student Union Building was the first of three building projects totaling $300,000 which had been recently approved by the Board of Trustees. The school's population was growing and new structures needed to be built to accommodate the students.

College of Puget Sound summer band camp group posed on the campus. For the first time, the music department of CPS would be offering a program combining music study with vacation and recreation. The camp would be open to high school students receiving a superior rating in solo and ensemble playing, who exhibit scholarship and good character. The students would live at the college and be given a private lesson each week as well as instruction in harmony and arranging. In addition, the group would perform several concerts throughout the summer. Sixty five students participated in the first month long camp. (T.
