Earth and Diversity Week

The Steen Family Symposium/Earth and Diversity Week was held at Pacific Lutheran University April 17-23, 2023. The 2023 theme was "Sowing Resilience in Fractured Land" and events included lectures, panels, book talks, and exhibits. On Tuesday, April 18, the Community Archives Center partnered with event planners to host a "story fest" event. An exhibit was displayed highlighting materials related to the Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed and interviews were conducted with students about the impact of climate change and their reflections on Earth Day.

Food Bridges Us

On December 10, 2022, at the Mottet branch, Sarah A. Chavez facilitated a workshop on writing about food memories. According to the Tacoma Public Library's event description, "This writing workshop invited folx to think about how food bridges us culturally in terms of reclamation, celebration and ancestral/traditional connections." Sarah. A. Chavez is a Chicana author and Assistant Teaching Professor of the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at the University of Washington-Tacoma.

Grit City Stories

"Grit City Stories" explores Tacoma's history and cultural heritage through interviews with those connected to the local history community. The program is hosted by Joe Bomar and presented by the Tacoma Historical Society.

Hilltop Story Fest

Hilltop Story Fest was held on May 6, 2023 at Tacoma Community House. The event included two oral history recording stations, a digitization station, an interactive story map, and other activities. Live storytelling, community presentations, and the debut of "Armed: A DanCe Demonstration" a performance piece by Kenya Adams. Oral history interviews were conducted by dindria barrow, Spencer Bowman, Aubrey Farache, Chris Jowaisas, Sarah Nguyen, and Jim Peterson.

Metro Parks Dash Point Park and Pier Public Meeting

The Dash Point Park and Pier Public Meeting was held on March 14, 2023 at the Center at Norpoint. The meeting was hosted by Metro Parks and was held to gain community feedback on the renovation of the Dash Point Pier and surrounding park. Community Archives Center staff recorded oral histories with attendees and hosted a pop-up exhibit with historic photos and documents related to the Dash Point area.
