University Union Club. On June 10, 1939 the Union Club, founded in 1888, and the University Club, founded in 1906, merged together. They became the University Union Club and had over 350 members. This building at 539 Broadway was designed by the architectural firm headed by Stanford White. His firm also designed the original Tacoma Hotel. White was shot and killed in 1906 by Harry Thaw, apparently out of jealousy over the relationship between Thaws's wife and White.

At noon on March 7, 1943, the Lady Eagles turned up at the Pacific Match Co. cafeteria to feed all the hungry Eagle workers at "Scrap Iron Acres," donating their time to sort salvage to go to the mill. Serving are Mrs. Clarence Peterson and Mrs. Clara Simpson. Enjoying the well deserved meal are Bill Stone, Amos Wilson and George Soule. (T. Times 3/8/1943, pg. 1)

On March 7, 1943, the members of the Eagles turned out in force at "Scrap Iron Acres," located near the Pacific Match Co. plant at 3223 So. Union, to sort some of the 3,000 tons of salvaged metal piled there. Pictured left to right are Julius LaVerne, Les Green of the Cooks & Waiters union, Undersheriff Joe Karpach, Deputy Sheriff Sig Kittelson and Don Bryant. The first Pierce County chapter of the national organization of Minute Maids stopped in their quest to sell war bonds to pose for the photographer on April 21, 1943. They were (l to r) Kay Woods - leader, Jean Connor, Barbara Engberg, Lucille Ludwick and Lucia Kisducak. They arrived suddenly and unannounced at group meetings, never staying for more than three minutes, and sold bonds. These particular maids are believed to be from the College of Puget Sound. Photographed at the Hotel Winthrop on April 21, 1943, three days later on Saturday the 24th five members of the new Pierce County Chapter of the National Organization of Minute Maids made their first public appearance at the war bond sale at Liberty Center, 800 Broadway. Minute Maids (l to r) Jean Connor, Barbara Engberg, Kay Woods - leader, Lucille Ludwick and Lucia Kisducak were encouraging Tacomans to buy war stamps and "Avenge Tokyo Raiders Bonds". Those who purchased a war bond could have a ride in an army jeep - with one of the Minute Maids - as a special bonus. They could also have a jeep named after their wife, husband, son, daughter, or favorite club, to have their own jeep fight for them on a foreign field. (T.Times 4/23/1943 p.11)

The United Service Organization Travelers Aid Service provided general information, assistance to new-comers and travelers, emergency overnight sleeping accommodations and activities for servicemen, military wives and others who were in need of services. During WWII part of Tacoma's Union Station at 1717 Pacific Avenue was set aside for use as emergency sleeping quarters by the Travelers Aid. This view, taken in September of 1944, shows the comfortable rest area set aside for women at the Depot. Cribs, twin-size beds with ruffled bedspreads, stuffed chairs and wooden chairs of all sizes were provided. The United Service Organizations - Travelers Aid Service provided general information, assistance to newcomers and travelers, emergency overnight sleeping accommodations for servicemen, military wives and others who were in need of services during WWII. USO scrap books for Navy. United Service Organizations Travellers Aid Service sold scrap books at the Fisher Branch Public Library, they were asking individuals to purchase scrap books and help complete them. Once scrap books are completed they may be returned to USO, where they will be shipped and distributed. The Navy has already requested 1000 books. United Service Organization Travellers Aid Service Easter Egg Hunt. Pvt. H. Shaboby of Chicago, Illinois and Seaman 1/c Michael V. Moauro of Canton, Ohio found the golden eggs in April of 1944, which entitled them to make a free telephone call home. The two winners holding up their golden eggs, unidentified USO staff and servicemen in photo (T. Times, 4/11/44, p. 16).

United Service Organization Travelers Aid Service. The social committee of the Travelers Aid Society, comprised of junior hostesses and service men, is kept busy by frequent events at the USO. Weekly birthday parties celebrating the service men's birthdays, quiz programs, Sunday coffee hour and afternoon roller skating at the Roller Bowl are just a few of the events taking place.

In order to maintain her position as a USO junior hostess, a girl was required to attend one function a week. Most of the girls enjoyed attending the dances and therefore needed a large supply of formal dances. One group of girls met weekly at the YMCA to make their own dresses. Patiently having the pattern pinned to her is Carolyn Moore, next to her is an unidentified woman doing the pinning. The Tacoma Lions Club held its annual Christmas party on December 17, 1942 at the new Tacoma Boys Club located at 711 South 25th Street. Forty boys were guests of the members attending the luncheon. Each boy received a gift from Santa. The Lions also took this opportunity to dedicate the new locker room at the club that was furnished and equipped by the Lions. (TNT 12/16/1942, pg. 13)
