Internationally acclaimed pianist, William Doppmann will perform with the Summer Pops! Symphony from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. for the finale concert of Art Bowl -- a day long festival of the arts to be held on Saturday, August 21, 1982 at Point Defiance Park.

International Chess Master John Donaldson gives a lecture to the Tacoma Chess Club. Donaldson is the son of former City Manager Bill Donaldson, and also graduated from Stadium High School. Donaldson has achieved the highest ranking of any Tacoma chess player and was captain of the U.S. Olympic Chess Team.

SEATTLE, Dec. 30--SETTLING IN SEATTLE--Newlyweds Elena Akhmilovskaya, former Russian chess player, and John Donaldson, the captain of the American chess team, are now living in Seattle following their secret wedding ceremony at the 28th Chess Olympiad in Greece last month. The couple are trying to get Soviet authorities to allow Akhmilovskaya's 7-year-old daughter, Dana, to come to the United States.

Soviet chess player Elena Akhmilovskaya and U.S. chess player John Donaldson came to live in Seattle after they were married Nov. 25, 1988. But Elena's seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had to remain behind in the Soviet Union. Elena told the Washington State Law and Justice Committee that she deeply misses her daughter, and that she and her husband have applied to Soviet authorities to allow Dana to come to the United States. A resolution asking that Dana be allowed to come to the USA was introduced into the State Senate.

State Sen. Kent Pullen, left, got a lesson in chess from Soviet player Elena Akhmilovskaya and her husband John Donaldson after the pair testified before the Senate Committee on Law and Justice. Pullen, who happens to be the 1985 Washington State Chess Champion, is the chair of the committee. He supported a Senate resolution which asked the officials of the Soviet Union to allow Elena's 7-year-old daughter, Dana, to leave the Soviet Union and come to live with her mother in Seattle. Donaldson said that his wife would eventually apply for American citizenship.
