Washington is a major producer of grapes used in wine making, and wine grapes and apples were the first fruit crops cultivated here, beginning in 1827.
Lebam is a community on Half Moon Prairie southeast of Raymond in central Pacific County. The original name was Half Moon. When a post office was established, postal officials objected to the two-word name. They accepted the present name, offered by the town's founder, Joseph W. Goodell, which was his daughter Mabel's name spelled backward.

Steilacoom, one of the first towns in Washington was founded as Port Steilacoom by Lafayette Balch. Steilacoom City was founded August 23, 1851, on the claim of John B. Chapman as a rival to Captain Balch's Port Steilacoom. The two places were known as Upper Steilacoom (Chapman's part) and Lower Steilacoom (Balch's part) and were later consolidated. Steilacoom was the first seat of government in Pierce County, and was the site of the first school district in the state.
