On August 18, 1948, the Richards Studio photographer flew around the city of Tacoma taking shots of various neighborhoods and individual streets. This aerial view is of S. 15th & Market Sts. near downtown Tacoma. The street running left to right at the bottom is 15th St. The light colored street at center is Market St. The Labor Temple, built circa 1941, is at the corner of 15th & Market (actual address of 1355 Market St.)

They provided quality assured wieners, beef, bacon, hame, sausage, lamb, pork, veal and many other meat products. ca. 1946. General Dwight D. Eisenhower with fellow officer in an undated, possibly late 1940's, sepia photograph. Lt. Col. James Stack was the senior aide to General Eisenhower. General Eisenhower, the Army chief of staff, was in town on February 19, 1946, conducting a flying inspection tour of army installations. General Eisenhower was not a stranger to Fort Lewis. He, then a Lt. Col., was the chief of staff of the 3rd Div. He sanctioned the then Sgt. Stack's courting of Lt. Carol Koski, army nurse. Mrs. Eisenhower was the godmother to the first Stack daughter, Linda. "Ike" would be the godfather of the second Stack daughter, Carol. Col. Stack maintained a home in Gig Harbor and was active in civic duties. He would retire in the late 1940's. Copies were ordered on May 19, 1946, by Col. Stack. (TNT 2-20-46) TPL-4752

Two unidentified welders at the Ace Furnace and Steel Company, 3740 South Union Avenue, were busy putting together a large steel tank in May of 1948. Ace Furnace and Steel, founded in the 1930s by A.T. Davies, manufactured many different types of products out of steel including: all steel fabricated service stations, all steel welded furnaces, steel air-conditioned units and all steel transport tank trailers. The company's advertising motto was "If It Can Be Fabricated From Steel, Ace Can Do It Better". The company was sold to Mid-Mountain Contractors, Inc. at the end of 1966. TPL-8257

View of Hickey Sales Company's punch boards and prizes. This five cent punch board offered men's rings or packs of cigarettes as the prizes. "Three Sure Hits 10, 5 or 3" would entitle the winner to the man's ring, if you had a seal with a number 2, you were entitled to a pack of cigarettes. The board reads "Last Punch on Board Receives All Remaining Seals," punch boards could be found in restaurants, diners, bars and taverns.

Drawing upon the 14th Psalm and the Book of Revelations, Dr. Walter A Maier of the Lutheran Hour radio program addressed a capacity audience in the Tacoma Ice Palace, 3801 South Union Avenue, on May 21, 1948. The main theme of his address was "Christ, Not Communism". Dr. Maier told his audience that Communism was "anti-Christ, anti-Bible, anti-church ... and anti-everything that is God or good" and warned that a Third World War would "give the Reds the rule of the world". (T. Times, 5/22/48, p. 2).
