Fire fighters are battling the fire at Harold E. Dahl Company from ladders set against the rear of the building. A ladder truck provides access to the roof of the building. Hoses look like spaghetti lying on the alley pavement. The cause of the fire that caused $89,000 damage to the four-story brick building was blamed on a cigarette. TPL-9889

Hopper Kelly Company opened their new music studio where they sold musical instruments and accessories as well as household appliances, heating apparatus, radios and television sets. They also handled conditioning and repairing old instruments and provided instruction in all brass, reed and string instruments. The company had been serving Tacoma since 1917. They advertise Baldwin Pianos on the front of the building at the right and on a sign that covers the downspout between the two buildings. John C. Chapman was manager of the stores in 1953. A modern kitchen was included in the farmhouse built for Don Dunn's family as part of the "Farm-in-a-Day" program. A large pull-out board has been added at a level that permits Mrs. Dunn to sit in a chair while preparing food for her family. A swivel shelf has been added in the corner near her to make the storage area easily accessible. A pressure cooker is seen on the counter near the large window over the sink. Thomas was a graduate of the College of Puget Sound and would attend the graduate college of foreign trade at Thunderbird Field, Phoenix. Beverly was a student at the College of Puget Sound. A reception for Bertha Lee (Steiner) and George Conrad Birchler was held at the Swiss Hall in Tacoma on July 12, 1952, to celebrate their wedding which occurred at the All Saints Catholic Church in Puyallup. Five musicians are pictured playing at the reception. The pianist is tentatively identified as Agnes Moser. Backdrop is scenic mural of boat and house on island surrounded by water. This was a Swiss group that performed somewhat regularly at events; this reception was held at the Swiss Hall. That is Agnes Moser on the piano. Joe Moser, brother to Agnes, is on the accordion; they were from Sumner, Joe Burgi, Sr. is on the bass; the Burgi family lived in Fife. Ed Schwarzenbarger on the clarinet is between the two Joes; Ed lived in Kent. The man at the far left on the clarinet is Michael Schuler, who lived with the Burgi family for a while and ultimately returned to Switzerland.

A studio portrait of Mrs. Emma Pease who worked in the lab at Carstens Packing Company. She lived at 6319 South Yakima Avenue. She is seen here with her hair curled and worn back away from her face. Her eyeglasses are of a style popular in the 1950's that curved up at the brow and had sparkles set into the frames. Mrs. Pease is wearing a print dress with matching necklace and earrings.

Philip H. Fisher received a four-year scholarship of $300 annually to the University of Washington based on his scholastic record in August of 1952. The scholarship was provided by Fred C. A man and a young girl approximately two-years old sit on a bench built into a large stone fireplace surround built of stone. The fireplace was included in the children's library on the second story of the new addition to the Tacoma Public Library built in 1952. One of the final stages in plywood manufacture is setting the glued and layered sheets of wood veneers in a hot press as shown at Anacortes Veneer, Inc., Anacortes, Washington. A sheet of plywood is placed on each layer of the press and the stacks are placed under pressure for differing lengths of time depending on the type of plywood being manufactured. This produces an irreversible bond between the plys stronger than the wood itself. The press is open in this view showing the sheets of plywood. Ordered by Douglas Fir Plywood Association. An aerial view of Philadelphia Quartz' plant on the Tacoma tideflats. Belgian silica sand and California soda ash were chemically combined to provide a product sold largely in Tacoma but marketed also in other Northwest cities. Silicate of soda, water-glass to farm households, was used in adhesives for the plywood industry and corrugated paper-board for the container industry.

A new type of tire chains were made of heavy castings by Fick Foundry Company. Fick Foundry Company manufactured machine castings for many machinery manufacturers in the Northwest. Castings were made of grey iron, steel, bronze and aluminum. Fick Foundry was owned by Joseph M. and Samuel Fick.

Marvin Company advertised as manufacturing bridge cranes, gantry cranes, floating cranes, hammerhead cranes, special hoists and machinery of fabricated structural steel. The large, open building has railroad tracks running through the length of it. Men and equipment are working along both sides.

On June 20, 1952, an unidentified woman, possibly owner Marjorie Beckstead, posed with a display of Nalley products at Beckstead's Grocery, 3807 Center St. She was holding a jar of Nalley's Tang salad dressing. The display included Nalley's spaghetti dinner, Lumberjack syrup, Treasure pickles, mustard, and Nalley's mayonnaise. Other groceries were stacked on shelves behind the woman. Beckstead's was owned by Clifford R. and Marjorie Beckstead.
