Delivery boy Chris Turlis and driver stand next to the Brown's Flower truck in this advertising photograph for the Brown's Conservatory of Flowers taken in front of the Lakewood Theater in December of 1937. Brown's Flowers, 4734 South Tacoma Way, was located opposite the Tacoma cemetery. They claimed to have Tacoma's finest delivery service for Tacoma's finest flowers. Pictured are, left to right, Charles Carlsen, Ole Wedeberg and Jack Fritz. The trio will be preparing the meal for the political dinner, where President F.D. Roosevelt will address the assemblage by radio hookup. The Mecca Cafe was located at 1152 Commerce. Steps led down to the entrance, since the restaurant was located below the street level. ca. 1937. Three black bears at Point Defiance Park. Zoo keeper George R. Jones reaches into steel bar cage while four young people watch. Cage is outdoors in open area with fenced area on back slope. In April of 1937, the zoo had no grizzly bears after the death of "Juliet," long time zoo resident. Her partner "Romeo" died the winter before. The zoo was expected a delivery of a pair of grizzly cubs in May from Yellowstone.

Poster on wall: "HERE in the completely equipped chemical laboratory is controlled the famous formula of Otto Birkmaier..." Otto Birkmaier was the brewmaster for many years at Columbia Breweries and was one of the most highly regarded brewers in the country. (T.Times)

ca. 1937. Mrs. Evelyn Moser, woman butcher, cutting a slab of meat with a saw. Mrs. Moser was trained by her father Frank W. Hamilton at a young age to cut meat. While other girls played with dolls, she learned how to handle knives. She is possibly the only female meat cutter in the US. Despite her dainty size, she can hold her own in the world of big, burly butchers. (T. Times 1/28/1937, pg. 18)

The Waller Road grade school's football team finished the 1937 season undefeated, emerging the champions of the Pierce County League, Division A. They were coached by George L. Cronquist. Front row, left to right, Fred Wepfer, Norman Sturm, Bob Infer, Chester Orwich, Francis Metcalf, Gene Falk and Coach Cronquist. ca. 1937. Sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma broker tried for mail fraud, 1937. Mr. Morrison would be sentenced to a five-year term for using the mails to defraud. He would be released on parole from McNeil Island federal penitentiary after serving three years. He then would be tried in Superior Court on 11 counts of fraud in 1941. (T.Times 10-14-41, p. 1)

ca. 1937. 1937 sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma investment broker tried for mail fraud. Courtroom filled with people. A courtroom awaits the sentencing of Mr. Morrison on federal charges of mail fraud. He would be sentenced to a five-year term at McNeil Island federal penitentiary and serve three years before being released on parole. He would be charged in 1941 with eleven counts of fraud stemming from a 1937 situation where Frank Berry, Old Town fisherman, lost $30,000 through investments made through the Morrison Investment Co.
