ca. 1939. Construction of the first Narrows Bridge, later known as the "Galloping Gertie." The road bed leads up to the water and then abruptly drops off. The west pier appears to have been secured out in the Sound, ready for further construction. Work began on the bridge on November 23, 1938. It was dedicated and opened to traffic on July 1, 1940. The bridge collapsed in a windstorm just four months later, the blame laid to faulty design. The replacement bridge opened 10 years later. Mount Rainier can be seen in the distance, with Tacoma spread out before. TPL-8609

ca. 1939. Concrete anchor for one of the piers of the first Narrows bridge being dumped, circa 1939. The 550 ton reinforced concrete pier anchors were cast at Scofield's, near the 15th St. Bridge in Tacoma. They measured 12 x 12 x 51ft. 6 inches. They were towed on scows one at a time to be dumped in a 900 foot circle around each pier site. They would be spotted into place by a team on the land, like laying over a target. Sea valves would be opened , flooding the scow to a tilt, the anchor would slide off and the empty scow would right itself. ("Bridging the Narrows" by Joe Gotchy; T.Times 1-31-1939, pg. 1)

Group portrait of Puyallup High School Vikings and coach Al Dahlberg in Viking Field in November of 1939. For the 3rd time in 5 years, the 1939 Vikings won the Puget Sound Conference Title. The strength of the team rested mainly in the line, where four players, nicknamed the "Four Mules," wreaked havoc on the other teams. Coach Dahlberg appears to be pointing out to the rest of the regulars how the four mules operate. Pictured are, front row, left to right: Ralph Calligan, Ray Elliott, Ray Adams, Jack Kelley, Jack Durga, Fred Strankmann and Chet Rees. Back row, left to right: Lind Simonsen, Francis Marcoe, Ned Jordan, Walt Parks, Buck Buchanan, Eddie Myers (team captain and quarterback), Coach Dahlberg, Wayne Snider, Gail Bruce, Bob Cochran and Walter Burr. The team finished the season with 8 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss. Coach Dahlberg and his two brothers, Jiggs and Harry, were all high school coaches. (T. Times 11/21/1939, pg. 13)
