Silver display at Mahncke's. Rows of sterling silver and silver plate vases, tea sets, plates, trays and coffee pots were attractively displayed at pioneer jewelers, Mahncke & Co., in November of 1920. Mahncke & Co. was located at 914 Pacific Avenue. Established in 1883, it was "The Store That Quality Built." (TNT Ad -11-5-20, p. 4)

On February 5, 1921, soldiers at Camp Lewis enjoy reading at the Liberty Library located near the camp's Hostess House. Books, magazines and newspapers were supplied without charge. The Liberty Library opened in November of 1917 with 6000 donated books. The collection had grown to roughly 50,000 volumes a mere six months later. Books were supplied through the auspices of the American Library Association. Camp librarian Arthur Beardsley later indicated that the library had circulated 62,682 volumes in a camp with approximate population of 7094 in 1921. An 40-foot square addition to the original one-story library was made about 1918 as the library needed more space for materials and for patron usage. This addition was a periodical reading room, perhaps shown above, which was attached to the center of the original building. ca. 1920. In 1920, Pacific Avenue was taking on a new look. Buildings had been demolished and work had begun on William R. Rust's 12 floor Rust building at 950 Pacific Ave. (under construction in this photograph.) Left to right, the buildings are 948 Pacific Ave. - home to Burnside hats on the ground floor and the Dayton Agency upstairs. The Dayton Agency, according to their signage, carried supplies for bicycles and motorcycles and did repairs. Next comes 946 Pacific with Scobey Cigar Co. downstairs and Naubert & Manning English Billiards upstairs. The following building at 942-44 Pacific Ave. included Walk Over Shoes, M&M Hat Store and Phil Friedman Jeweler downstairs with the Peterson & Cooksie Billiard Parlor above. The Shriners must have been in town at the time of the photograph because most of the buildings are decorated with bunting, Shriner emblems and American flags. G61.1-032

In March of 1921, Herman "Burt" Pagel, a driver for the Betsy Ann Bakery, was photographed with one of the bakery's small fleet of delivery trucks. The Betsy Ann Bakery, then located at 2513-15 Sixth Avenue, was founded by Edward Hall, Edward Pickert and Napoleon Raquer in 1920. The company quickly outgrew its building and built a new bakery at 2805-07 Sixth Avenue which opened in 1922. Betsy Ann's was in business until 1933. Photograph ordered by the Griffith Motor Co. A streetcar climbs Jefferson Avenue as it makes its daily rounds on March 3, 1921. The Wickersham Triangle Building at 1702 Jefferson Avenue is to the far left; it was demolished in 1936. To the right of the Wickersham is the Hotel Carlton, 1552 Jefferson, now known as the Carlton Center. It was built in 1909 by Anton Huth, based on a design by C.A. Darmer, Architect. In the far background is the skyline of the 1500 block of Pacific Ave., much of which has been demolished. This curving intersection is one of the few sections of road in downtown Tacoma that resembles the unique street plan for Tacoma created by Frederick Law Olmstead; the design was rejected as impractical. A large shipment of timber is waiting to be loaded onto the Japanese ship, the "Genoa Maru," in mid-June of 1921. The St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co., one of the largest mills in the area, had been shipping lumber, especially Douglas fir, overseas for years. The vessel was also to take on 750,000 feet of timber from the Puget Sound Lumber Co. The "Genoa Maru" had arrived on June 11th and was berthed at the St. Paul docks. The larger pieces of timber, consisting of 32 x 32" sq. and 40' long sections, were designated for the Japanese government and secured from Puget Sound Lumber. Two cranes were necessary to complete the loading. St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber's part of the cargo consisted of 1 million feet of lumber. Photograph ordered by the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co. Telephone company employees and their families enjoyed a festive picnic at Point Defiance in June of 1921. A long row of picnic tables is set along the sand on what is now called Owen Beach. The picnickers are dressed rather formally with men in suits and ties and women in dresses with hats. TPL-590; G41.1-063

The upscale Ingleside Sunken Gardens was built in 20 days in 1921, with ground broken May 20 and the club opened early in June by owner/manager R.J. Fitzgerald. It was named the "Sunken Gardens" in tribute to Chicago's Green Mill Gardens, although it appears that there were no real gardens on the premises.Built at a cost of $20,000, the club would provide a location for dinner dances, theater parties and banquets for the Society Set. It was located on Pacific Highway in Lakewood, near the Country Club. The one story structure was mostly taken up by the large dining and dance hall with its 4000 square feet of hardwood dance floor. Twenty eight sets of French doors led from the dance floor to the promenade veranda that surrounded it, all enclosed with French windows. Kitchens and two banquet rooms took the remainder of the space. The dance hall had 120 specially designed tables that resembled flowers and seated 500 and a decorated balcony that housed the 6 piece orchestra. The "gardens" were eighteen miles of lattice work intertwined with $2,000 worth of ever-blooming artificial flowers. The club was open year round until it was destroyed by fire in 1936. Dining al fresco in heavily wooded Manitou Park on June 16, 1921 are two out-of-state tourists. Travelers came equipped with canvas tents, cooking supplies and even comfortable folding chairs all stuffed into their automobiles. Most visitors only stayed one night at the free campgrounds before moving on. 1921 was a busy summer camping season for Manitou Park: it was estimated that about 11,000 tourists visited the park in roughly 2,770 cars. It was a large increase from the previous year's totals of 3,600 visitors and 900 cars as word-of-mouth spread about the beauty of the Northwest and the welcome accommodations . In July of 1921, the employees of the Cushman Hospital were treated to a dance at the "K.C. Bldg." The merrymakers posed for this group portrait in the center of the vast ballroom festooned with crepe paper streamers and decorated with American flags for the upcoming Independence Day. In the center of the group is the drummer and fellow band members of the musical entertainment, Mahoney's Red Peppers. The band was a family affair led by Mrs. Ada Mahoney, who played the violin, and her sons who played the drums and banjo. The "K.C. Bldg." possibly refers to the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 718-20 Broadway from 1919-1928. G25.1-016

On July 4, 1921, some of the cars participating in the 10th annual Speedway Classic are lined up on the board track. In the lead is #27 Tom Alley's Frontenac followed by #1 Eddie Hearne's big white Revere Special. The Marmon Speedster pace car, which would be driven by Ray Harroun, brings up the rear. In the background is the judge's viewing tower. Twenty thousand fans turned out to cheer on the 9 drivers in the 250 mile race. The drivers finished in the following order: Milton, Sarles, Thomas, Hearne, Alley and Miller. Pullen and Elliott were flagged off the track at the completion of the race. ca. 1921. Informal close-up portrait of auto racer, Eddie Miller. Mr. Miller, part of the powerful four-car Duesenberg team, paid his third visit to Tacoma's Speedway in 1921. He picked up his bride from back East before arriving in Tacoma in late June, following the path laid by his former teammate, Tommy Milton, who had done the same before winning the 1920 Tacoma race. Eddie Miller in his #7 Duesenberg came in sixth in 1921 with a time of 2:39:55 and average mph of 93.70. He earned $1000 and 35 championship points. Mr. Miller was credited in building 23 cars. Before piloting a car himself, he had riden as a "mechanician" with six drivers. Eddie Miller had been on every speedway in the United States, traveling over 23,000 miles in racing cars alone. On July 4, 1921, at 2:30 in the afternoon, the flag dropped starting the 10th annual Tacoma Speedway Classic. Nine drivers had entered the 250 mile race. It was driven on Tacoma's infamous board track and had a purse of $25,000, to be divided nine ways. On the right is the pace car, a Marmon Speedster, carrying referee Eddie Rickenbacker and pace maker Ray Harroun. The car would pace the drivers for one lap before the race actually took off. Rickenbacker was a former star of the race track and a famous ace of the air and Harroun was also a veteran driver. Harroun was a last minute replacement for Louis Chevrolet. The car on the left of the pace car is #6, the Duesenberg driven by Roscoe Sarles. Sarles had earned the pole position by driving at the top speed of 101 mph during the trials. The race was won by favorite Tommy Milton. Milton broke all speed records for distance with his average speed of 98 mph. (TDL 7/4/1921, pg. 1; 7/5/21, pg. 1) G51.1-082

The Tidewater Mill, on the east side of the Hylebos Waterway, was photographed on September 2, 1921 as the large steamship "Quinault" was being loaded with timber. The mill was built in 1918 on six acres of soggy land purchased from Gen. James Ashton. The land was filled in and the mill was built. It was one of only a handful on the Pacific Coast capable of producing the longest timbers. Tidewater could cut timbers up to 130 feet in length. The mill site's major advantage was 750 feet of deep water moorage, allowing the loading of several vessels at a time. (TDL 12/22/1918, pg. B-8) G49.1-071; TPL-9251

In 1921, Brown & Haley was still marketing their candy under the name of Oriole Chocolates. They dipped their chocolate by hand. Female workers are pictured in September of 1921, dressed in spotless white dresses and matching hats, but without gloves. Each woman has one hand covered in chocolate, as she rolls the center piece in chocolate and places it on a tray to dry. G33.1-141; TPL-8700

Candy manufacturing in 1921 at Brown & Haley. At this time, their candy was still marketed under the name of Oriole Candies. A number of workers pose in the factory. The women are dressed in pristine white dresses and matching hats, the men wear clean white aprons, but none of the workers wear gloves. The front group is gathered around an early assembly line. The candy comes down the belt where it is loaded by hand into trays. A woman with a dolly takes the trays away. It is unclear what the group in the back is doing, although the man on the right stands behind some kind of a vat. All Orioles candies at this time were made by hand. G33.1-140

The women in the back are possibly either wrapping medium size tubes of a harder candy, such as toffee or caramel, or unwrapping them and slicing them into nougats. The woman in the front is dipping something into a stainless steel pot beside her. A fan on the left cools her work. The chocolate covered candies to the right are possibly the finished product. This is the empty new grandstand at the Western Washington Fair as photographed in September of 1921. The first beams were lifted on July 15th in the construction of a new 40 x 120 grandstand with seating for 2,200 fairgoers. The new section of seating brought the total number of seats to 5,700. Arriving from Yokohama, the Japanese ship, the "Katori Maru," is in town in mid-January of 1922 to take on a shipment of flour from the Tacoma Grain Co. warehouse on the waterfront. The company produced Pyramid Flour, "The Great Bread Maker." The "Katori Maru" set sail for the Orient on the evening of January 12th. G49.1-154 (TDL 1-11-22, p. 7-article)

St. Ann's Orphanage. In 1921, St. Ann's Home relocated to the former Byrd estate at 8040 So. J St. Their original location at 1220 So. 13th St. was so small that they had to turn away many homeless children. In comparison, the Byrd estate included an eleven room house along with ample grounds and fruit trees. By 1922, St. Ann's was home to 66 children, most of them boys, and an addition had been added to supply needed room, including two school rooms. Seven sisters under the guidance of Sister Aquinata conducted the institution. In 1938, the Home burned to the ground. BU-14395 (TDL 2/5/1922, pg. E-8 photo, TDL 5/2/1920, pg. E-6)

This is the view that one would see in February of 1922 of St. Helens Avenue near 7th St. looking south. The YMCA is the tall building on the right at 7th & Market. Streetcar tracks ran down the middle of the road which was not paved with smooth asphalt but more of a brick-like substance. On the left (or east) side of the street was the building housing the News Tribune and Tacoma Daily Ledger newspapers. The papers were published independently and seemed to exist harmoniously. Five unidentified Boy Scouts help with the Tacoma Federation of Social Agencies' first Community Chest Drive for the needy in March of 1922; the slogan--"Tacoma Cares. Do Your Share." The boys would be distributing stacks of reminders in the way of red and white placards to be placed on windshields of every car they spotted downtown. $271,478.68 was set as the goal for the fundraising drive that would help 28 relief and social agencies. U.S. District Court Judge Edward Cushman was named chairman of the drive. United Good Neighbor Fund replaced the Community Chest in 1952, and in 1972 the name was changed to United Way of Pierce County. Tacoma street scene. This is the intersection of South 56th St. and South Tacoma Way (then known as South Union Ave.), one of the area's prime business districts, as seen in March of 1922. North Pacific Bank is at the left. Northern Pacific's South Tacoma Shops were a short distance away at 52nd & South Proctor. The South Tacoma community was a thriving area containing restaurants, garages, theaters, hotels, grocery stores, real estate and other professional enterprises. TPL-2538; G62.1-003

Wearing festive party hats, the employees (and families) of the Inland Revenue Service, District of Washington, paid a visit to Ohop Bob Tea House near Eatonville in April of 1922 - not to audit the roadhouse but to enjoy their annual banquet. Built originally in 1915 as a clubhouse for the Tacoma Automobile Club, it became Ohop Bob two years later and remained a popular destination for Sunday drivers. The inn was destroyed by fire in May of 1965 at a loss of $65,000. G24.1-019

Interior view of the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 5 South "G" St. prior to its dedication in April of 1922. This photograph of the richly elaborate interior was one of those selected to be printed in the Tacoma Daily Ledger's article of April 7, 1922. The $200,000 structure, located at Park Heights & Division Avenue overlooking Wright Park, was formally dedicated on April 7, 1922. The idea of a Masonic temple had been floated about for several years before the site on "G" St. had been purchased in June of 1919. The structure was designed by the architectural firm of Sutton, Whitney & Dugan with Albertson, Cornell Bros., and Walsh serving as contractors. It would remain a Masonic temple only until 1937 when it was sold to the Independent Bible Church and subsequently remodeled. Unidentified farmhouse framed by towering firs in the Summit View area of Pierce County. Photographer Marvin Boland had taken several shots of various farms in the Summit View neighborhood during the spring of 1922. Besides farmhouses, properties included barns and miscellaneous buildings.

ca. 1922. This is Harstad Hall, familarly known as "Old Main," in a photograph taken circa 1922. "Old Main" was the first building on the Pacific Lutheran College (later University) campus located at 12180 Park Ave. So., Parkland. Its cornerstone was laid in October of 1891. The building was renamed for the school's first president, Rev. Bjug Harstad, in 1960. It had a myriad of uses over the years including classrooms, administration offices, chapel, library, dining hall and dormitories. G40.1-142, TPL-474, BU-12762
