Angry Puyallup Tribe women gathered at the Tribal administration building to protest a new rule disallowing spouses fishing rights. Soviet chess player Elena Akhmilovskaya and U.S. chess player John Donaldson came to live in Seattle after they were married Nov. 25, 1988. But Elena's seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had to remain behind in the Soviet Union. Elena told the Washington State Law and Justice Committee that she deeply misses her daughter, and that she and her husband have applied to Soviet authorities to allow Dana to come to the United States. A resolution asking that Dana be allowed to come to the USA was introduced into the State Senate.

State Sen. Kent Pullen, left, got a lesson in chess from Soviet player Elena Akhmilovskaya and her husband John Donaldson after the pair testified before the Senate Committee on Law and Justice. Pullen, who happens to be the 1985 Washington State Chess Champion, is the chair of the committee. He supported a Senate resolution which asked the officials of the Soviet Union to allow Elena's 7-year-old daughter, Dana, to leave the Soviet Union and come to live with her mother in Seattle. Donaldson said that his wife would eventually apply for American citizenship.

Police and state revenue agents seized cartons of unstamped cigarettes and other Tabacco products allegedly headed for the Satiacum Smoke Shop. The raid was based on a state law prohibiting unlicensed distributors from handling unstamped cigarettes. Puyallup Tribal member Robert Satiacum is not a licensed dealer according to Robert Munzinger, who serves as assistant director of field operations for the Revenue Department. Dodd, who went against the advice of his attorneys, faces the death penalty or a mandatory life sentence without parole for first-degree aggravated murder.
