Donaldson, John (Chess Master) - 6

Soviet chess player Elena Akhmilovskaya and U.S. chess player John Donaldson came to live in Seattle after they were married Nov. 25, 1988. But Elena's seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had to remain behind in the Soviet Union. Elena told the Washington State Law and Justice Committee that she deeply misses her daughter, and that she and her husband have applied to Soviet authorities to allow Dana to come to the United States. A resolution asking that Dana be allowed to come to the USA was introduced into the State Senate.

A Sad But Hopeful Look.....Pastor Lynn Farnum (Trinity Presbyterian Church), no stranger to the life on Tacoma's Hilltop and the plight of its children, gives a thoughtful glance down a stretch of streets on the Hill today as she joined a concerned group of local pastors and church leaders who briefly toured the area following a press conference they called to express concern and call attention to the Children's Initiative which they support. In the background (right arm raised) another spokesperson for the group, Rev. Dave Alger (Ex. Director of Associated Ministries) explains the sights to other members of the group.

Judy Slaney puts a Mazda decal on the tail gate of a Mazda 4x4 pick-up truck at the Mazda import facility at the Port of Tacoma. Congress is taking a critical look at Foreign Trade Zones to see if they help or hinder the U.S. economy. Port of Tacoma has the second largest Free Trade Zone in the country, and the port officials consider it an important economic development too. Mazda adds accessories and detailing to cars imported from Japan and Korea.

Safe Streets Program (Fighting Drugs and Gangs) - 7

"I live on K street and I'm at war!" With those words Mary Miller, a hilltop resident and parent of 3 school-age children, introduced herself to a classroom of other concerned citizens during an hour-long workshop for "Safe Streets" held at Mt Tahoma High School this evening. Several Hundred (one count had it at 500) folks met in various classroom settings to discuss strategies and vent their fears and frustrations in dealing with the cities problems of late and assigning each participant an "action front" theme to concentrate and educate upon. Miller, who listens to a speaker emphasize the need for group action, sits next to her "Safe Streets" sweatshirt.

As early evening moves into dusk....
19-year-old Tacoma resident Janine Absten (right) and 19-year-old Sean Brown (Tacoma) light candles as part of a protest (and vigil) that was joined by 150 others at Owen Beach this evening. The group was concerned by the recent oil spill in Alaska and spent the time discussing the issues surrounding the incident and voicing feelings thereof. The group, with many families and children present created no problems for park officials who earlier were concerned that the protest might grow out of hand, possibly resulting in damages. After the gathering members left the park.

State Sen. Kent Pullen, left, got a lesson in chess from Soviet player Elena Akhmilovskaya and her husband John Donaldson after the pair testified before the Senate Committee on Law and Justice. Pullen, who happens to be the 1985 Washington State Chess Champion, is the chair of the committee. He supported a Senate resolution which asked the officials of the Soviet Union to allow Elena's 7-year-old daughter, Dana, to leave the Soviet Union and come to live with her mother in Seattle. Donaldson said that his wife would eventually apply for American citizenship.
