The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

This aerial view of the Pacific Lutheran College campus and grounds was taken in January of 1948. Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. Children's program at Temple Theater, Tacoma Philharmonic Association, Mrs. Ross Wright. Children are coming off special runs of the Tacoma Transit Company buses to attend the Tacoma Philharmonic presentation of the Pacific Northwest Symphony at Temple Theater. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. The Marchetta Ki girls marching unit at Lincoln High School was scheduled to perform at two football games during the first weekend of November in 1948. On Friday evening, November 5 they appeared at the Bellingham - Lincoln H. S. game in the Lincoln Bowl. The next day they were part of the halftime show at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S) Homecoming game against Central Washington. Tacoma Public Schools served Thanksgiving meals to about 12,000 students with children receiving turkey, dressing and all the holiday fixings. The school cooks and their assistants were busy preparing the special meal all day. In January 1949 Annie Wright Seminary students would be traveling to Olympia where they would visit the Governor and the State government buildings. The above photograph of students enrolled in Annie Wright Seminary's lower school appeared in the 1949 Annie Wright Seminary's yearbook, the Shield. All the girls are wearing their uniforms. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. Tacoma Vocational-Technical School offered training for all types of trades. In 1949 there were 500 students in attendance with 1,400 more as apprentices. Here six men are learning to install and repair utility lines in the electrical lineman trade, one of 50 trades offered. The three students at left are identified as (in no particular order) Ed Sorger, Jr., George Blanc and Tom Padden. Strapped securely by lineman's belts, some are working on transformers on genuine, although shortened, poles. The Tacoma Vocational-Technical School was operated by the Tacoma public school system in compliance with the state plan for vocational education. The buildings were designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. The Tudor Gothic brick buildings are covered by ivy. The roofs are studded by dormers. Expansive grounds surround the buildings.

In March of 1949, Bellarmine High School journalists were given the opportunity to put their classroom education into practice by the Tacoma Times. Ann Deyo, a fifth grader in Miss Hilda Meisner's class at Lowell School is about to play a recording of "Die Fledermaus" overture by Johann Strauss which they would hear performed at the matinee concert sponsored by the Tacoma Philharmonic and Meadowsweet Dairies, Inc. This aerial photograph of part of the northwest section of the Stadium District was taken in August of 1948. The large Tudor Gothic design building at the bottom is Annie Wright Seminary, 827 Tacoma Avenue North, which opened at this address in 1924. Stadium High School was built in 1891, it was built in the French Chateau style and originally designed by architect A. B. Hewitt, architect Frederick Heath remodeled the building and changed it into the school. Stadium Bowl was built in 1909, it has been remodeled many times because of mudslides and weather damage. Putting their best foot forward are thirteen young students from the Annie Wright Seminary. Dressed in seemingly patriotic colors, the little girls are all holding hands as they pose on the spacious grounds of the private school. The picture was taken on May 9, 1953, the occasion of May Day festivities, so the children may have been getting ready to put on a performance in front of the Queen, her court, alumnae and other guests.

Queen and her court. Annie Wright Seminary annually celebrated May Day festivities on the school's lawns. Erin Lombard of Yakima, seated with scepter, was the 1953 Queen of May. She and her court posed for a large group portrait on May 9, 1953. The little girls in white in the front row are from the kindergarten glass; they would act as heralds, flower girls, crown, scepter and train bearers. The older girls are members of the senior class and would serve as attendants to Queen Erin and her maid of honor, junior Marilyn Wotton of Puyallup. Third graders move in precision as they dance around the traditional May Pole in 1953 May Day festivities outside the ivy-covered halls of the Annie Wright Seminary. The May Queen, Erin Lombard, and her court and other spectators watch the intricate weaving. It had long been the custom to have the third grade class present the May Pole dance. Not only was a queen crowned in May Day festivities at Annie Wright Seminary, but guests and students were entertained by various musical programs. In 1953, a program of modern dance was presented under the direction of Nancy Jane Bare. These girls, dressed in costumes of America's pioneering past, may have been in the Middle School.
