The wedding of Shirley Claire Fields and Jack Schneidermann in the Wedgewood Room at the Winthrop Hotel. A single ring ceremony was performed by Rabbi Bernard Roseberg under a canopy of white stock and greens flanked by candelabra. The bride, the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Hyman S. Fields, wore an ivory satin gown with a yoke of net and venice lace with a long train and an illusion veil. She carried a bouquet of orchids and stephanotis. The groom was from Coos Bay, Oregon and was the son of Mrs. David Schneidermann. The matron of honor was the recently married Mrs. Alvin L. Fields, sister-in-law of the bride, who wore the same bridal gown at her wedding. The Junior Bridesmaid was Dorothy Fields and the Bridesmaids were Helen Gold, Mona Kleiner and Nancy Brown. The Best Man was Harold Schneidermann. The bride was a graduate of Stadium High School and received her degree in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Washington. She was a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi. The groom was a Business Administration graduate from the University of Oregon and a member of Sigma Alpha Mu. The banquet meeting of the Washington Retailers' Club convention, March 19-20, 1951, in the Wedgewood room at the Winthrop Hotel. The convention was attended by the 30 Washington state member clubs, totaling over 200 high school age prospective retailers, who attended meetings to hear experienced businessmen discuss sales, merchandising and advertising methods.The banquet on Monday evening was the highlight where Eugene Ruffner, executive of the J.C. Penney Co., spoke on the subject "Opportunities for the student in retailing." The high school study program was intended to give interested students the opportunity to attend classes in the morning and then get on the job training at Tacoma stores. The program was offered in conjunction with Tacoma's vocational school program and most members were high school seniors. Mayor John Anderson is second from right on the front row. The four guests of honor at the 15th annual Industrial Conference Board's dinner meeting in the Crystal Ballroom at the Winthrop Hotel. Delegates from Tacoma's industries filled the Crystal Ballroom to hear two speakers on the theme "Mobilizing for Freedom" and to watch a "Petition for Peace" pageant featuring servicemen, the Lincoln choir singers, Girl and Boy Scouts and the Rev. William P. McCormick. The guests of honor were four wounded soldiers from Madigan Army Hospital recuperating from the Korean action. They were Major Frank Olander, Lt. Donald F. Burr, Sgt. Thomas O'Reilly and PFC Raymond Turner. The main address was "The Enemy We Face" by Father Frances Corkery, President of Gonzaga University, in which he charged the U.S. as being apathetic and morally soft and flabby. The Comus Club dance committee met in February 1951 to plan its annual Sweethearts Ball. The romantic soiree was held in the Winthrop Hotel's Wedgewood Room on February 17, 1951. Capital District of the Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs held their 1950 Christmas Show at the Hotel Winthrop. The show featured simulated doors to provide a background for a variety of door decorations for the home and window scenes were also shown as well as a table arranged for Christmas dinner. A separate feature was a Christmas workshop which offered all manner of wreaths, swags, table decor, hand-made candles, cones, pine and other Christmas greens to the public. Two men were inducted into the Quarter Century club of Standard Brands, Inc., at the annual dinner for the Northwest area at Winthrop Hotel. They were Walter A. Logan, a machinist in the maintenance deparment of the Sumner Fleischmann's yeast plant, and Clarence H. Romnes, who worked in the vinegar department. Acme News, Ronald Schaad. New officers of Order of Runeberg, Wedgewood Room. The western district Order of Runeberg held their biennial convention in Tacoma in August, 1950. Newly elected officers pose smilingly in the Hotel Winthrop's Wedgewood Room. There were 75 official delegates to the convention and 118 visitors, with over 60 from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Eureka. The Order of Runeberg is named for Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a noted Finnish poet. His poems and essays, based on Swedish culture, have been compared with Goethe and Shakespeare. Broiled steak dinner set up at Winthrop. The Hotel Winthrop was well known for their delicious meals. This photograph shows an elegant place setting with a New York cut sirloin steak with french fried potatoes, garden salad and toasted garlic rolls on display. Additional items on the table include a small pitcher of cream, bowl of sugar, salt and pepper shakers, and gravy boat. This particular dinner special cost a hungry diner $3.50 in 1950.

The Hotel Winthrop on Broadway is the location for a luncheon honoring the board of directors of the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads on July 13, 1950. The nine men are posed under the Rotary Club's banner. Seated second to the left is C.H. Buford, president of the Milwaukee Road. According to the Northwest Room's clipping files, this railroad was the first with improvements in transportation: owning and operating its own sleeping and dining cars, installing electric lighting and radio-phones in passenger trains, and being the only road to operate its own through tracks on its own tracks from Chicago to Puget Sound.

Liberty Bell presentation during US Treasury Savings Bond Drive. A replica of the Liberty Bell has been placed next to the speakers platform erected in front of the Hotel Winthrop at the corner of Broadway and 9th Street. People have begun to gather for the ceremonies. Reno Odlin holds onto Sandy Custis, son of Neal and Nancy Heston, as he and Margaret Marshall of Seattle ring the bell of a replica of the original Liberty Bell to officially open the 1950 Independence Savings Bond Drive. Reno Odlin was state chairman of the savings bond division. Margaret Marshall was a descendant of Chief Justice John J. Marshall at whose funeral procession the original Liberty Bell cracked in 1835. All born on March 28, 1949, these six babies celebrated their one year birthday in the Daffodil Room of the Winthrop Hotel, which had its grand opening on the day they were born. Thirteen babies in Tacoma, 9 girls and 4 boys, were born on the same day as the popular restaurant, named for the Puyallup Valley's bright yellow spring flowers. In recognition of this fact, the babies and their parents were invited to be birthday guests of the restaurant. They were also presented with silver piggybanks engraved with their names. Chairman and officers of the Capital District, Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs, in the Daffodil Room at the Hotel Winthrop. A group of seventeen women from the various local garden clubs have gathered for a lunch meeting prior to the opening of the second annual Christmas show by the group, "Twas the Week Before Christmas", held at the Hotel Winthrop. Funds generated from the show were to be used to establish a garden center building fund. More than 85 garden clubs from the district responded with exhibits to the show. This photograph from December 1949 of the Sabre Room in the Winthrop Hotel shows the popular Tacoma restaurant three months after its official opening in September. Created by Trader Vic to look like an authentic old-English tap room, the Sabre room was decorated in authentic English style and featured open hearth food service where you could see expert chefs prepare the food. The menu included roast beef cooked in rock salt, barbecued ribs, and steak and kidney pie - desert included trifle. The room could seat 110 persons, including the ladies' cocktail lounge.
