The baseball tradition involves a member from each team placing their hands around the neck of the bat; the last to reach the top wins. A ground breaking ceremony for new women's dormitory at the College of Puget Sound was held on February 16, 1938. Govenor Clarence D. Martin shakes hands with President Edward H. Todd of the College of Puget Sound during the school's 50th annual convocation. Sponsored by Judge O.G. Ellis, Governor Martin received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Douglas Stanley of New York and Professor Trevor Kincaid of the University of Washington also were awarded honorary degrees. An elderly group of former Vashon College students gather to reminisce on college days at Burton on Vashon Island. Burton is located on Vashon Island on the north end of Quartermaster Harbor in southwest King County. The community grew around the college that was founded in 1892. It was a coeducational, non sectarian preparatory school whose enrollment grew from 78 in 1892 to 200 in 1904. Unfortunately, the main building of Vashon College burned to the ground in 1912 with building and contents a total loss and a decision was made not to rebuild.

Vashon College was in operation 20 years from its opening in 1892 until a major fire closed the school in 1912. The coeducational, non sectarian boarding school grew from an initial enrollment of 78 to a top enrollment of 200 in 1904.

A group of unidentified former Vashon College students gathered on August 7, 1938 beside an unidentified wooden building for a school reunion photograph. The Burton Garage and Shell Station and a church steeple are in background. The community of Burton grew up around the college that was founded there in 1892. The school provided a co-educational, Christian environment for study, without all the distractions of city life. It closed in 1912 when the main building burned to the ground and it never reopened.

At the 51st commencement exercises held at CPS, 92 seniors and 7 post graduates would be receiving their diplomas.
