Blue King II, a Kerry Blue Terrier, won Best in Show at the second annual All Breed Dog Show, April 29-30, 1939, sponsored by the Tacoma Kennel Club and held at the old Sears and Roebuck building, at 24th and Pacific. After numerous wins on the west coast, the terrier was in the lead for the American Kennel Club's prize, awarded for winning the most victories of the year. (T. Members of the Tacoma Master Builders Association annually sponsored the Tacoma Home Show for many years. It was a good opportunity to acquaint Tacomans with the newest in home styles and conveniences and good advertising for local contractors and businesses. A crowd of spectators await the launching of the minesweeper #489, the U.S.S. Gallant, built by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding on the evening of June 4, 1954. Martinac Shipbuilding had received a contract to built nine 171-foot minesweepers for the Navy during the early 1950's. Those observing the launching heard Rear Adm. W.F. James, 13th Naval District medical officer, give the principal address. Mrs. Walter Meserole, daughter of J.M. Martinac, was the ship's sponsor. Dr. R. Franklin Thompson, president of the College of Puget Sound, was the featured speaker at the annual banquet of the Pacific Northwest Conference Savings & Loan Associations on May 24, 1954. His speech was entitled "Prelude to a New Age." At the head table in the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom with Dr. Thompson were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Perham, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit VanderEnde, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Alston Adams. On September 22, 1937, Isabel Smitley, with her husband Tacoma Mayor George Smitley decorated the winning race horse "Premier Jim" and congratulated his jockey in the winner's circle at the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup. The horse had just won the afternoon's feature event, the one-mile "Mayor Smitley" race for previous non-winning 3 year olds. They were posed on the grandstand grass during Tacoma Day at the Fair. As always, on Tacoma Day in 1937, food was a major part of the fun at the Puyallup Fair. During Tacoma Day at the 1937 Western Washington Fair, three Lincoln High School boys have met three girls from Fife High School and are walking arm-in-arm through the fun-filled Fairway. The Fairway was added in 1932, with new rides, games of chance and side shows. Kids and adults alike are enjoying the thrill of being 45-feet up in the air on the two, 12-seat Eli Ferris wheels. Over 56,000 people flocked to the Westen Washington Fair in Puyallup on Tacoma Day in September of 1937. Three little visitors, Tommy Veale and Bobby Glover of Bremerton and Patricia Ruth Gray of Tacoma were given instructions by attendant Clayton Osborne on how to drive a toy fire engine on the canvas-top, merry-go-round auto ride.

Noted Indian leaders and their tribes set-up camp at Puyallup's Western Washington Fairs to demonstrate their crafts and share their culture. In 1937, Chief Shelton (wearing feathered headdress) and his tribe camped at the fair. A record breaking crowd of more than 56,000 attended the fair on Tacoma Day that year. Harry P. Cain, chairman of the Washington Golden Jubilee Committee, sells the first tickets to the 1939 celebration to two "old timers." Various events would occur during the month of July, in honor of fifty years of statehood. Receiving plaudits for the successful coordination of the massive celebration, Mr. Cain was elected Mayor the following year. ALBUM 12.

The Jubilee Princesses smile brightly at the Winthrop Hotel after the preliminary round of selection for the Jubilee Queen, held on June 26, 1939. The resulting six finalists, pictured here, were selected from a field of 26. The winner will be declared Jubilee Hostess Queen and the runner up Miss Pierce County. The remaining four princesses will reign over the four principal features of the celebration: the pageant, air show, water carnival and Mardi Gras festival, also called the "Village of Nations." On the first day of July, 1939, 23 year old Margaret Franich, candidate for Golden Jubilee Queen, poses seated neatly on a stool. She was later crowned "Miss Pierce County" and was a contestant at the Miss Washington contest, where she came in second to Seattle's Potlatch Queen. She is dressed in a dark dress or suit, with matching white heels, handbag and wide brimmed picture hat. Jubilee Princess. Lucille Courtney was a semi-finalist for the 1939 Jubilee Queen title. She would be named a Jubilee Princess, along with three other young women. The princesses would participate in the four principal features of the celebration...the pageant, the air show, the water carnival and the Mardi Gras festival. She is pictured in this July 1, 1939, photograph with a short, curly blond hairdo and wearing a blouse with detailed piping and puffy sleeves. (T.Times, 7-4-39, p. 16).
