The tug Brynn Foss assists in the launching of the tuna seiner, "Cheryl Marie," in the early morning of December 7, 1968. The 176-foot fishing boat was one of three being built at Tacoma Boatbuilding with the U.S. Maritime Commission paying 48% of the cost under the Fishing Fleet Improvement Act of 1964. Each vessel would cost $1.8 million. The "Cheryl Marie" was owned and captained by John Silveira. She would be turned over to Captain Silveira in February of 1969. The larger facility at 326 Alexander Ave. made it possible for the company to increase payroll and accept more jobs. Scenes from Star Iron & Steel. Star Iron & Steel was one of the northwest's oldest steel fabricating firms. It was well known for the quality of its cranes, especially the heavy duty cranes manufactured for the Navy during WWII. Washington Natural Gas Co. exhibition booth. This may have been taken about the time of the annual Tacoma Home Show generally held in the spring at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. A variety of gas appliances are on display, including Tappan ranges, Speed Queen washers and dryers, barbecues, hot water heaters, and indoor-outdoor lighting. ca. 1969. 1969 Richards stock footage. Western Boat Building plant. Western Boat Building's new shipyard was located on Marine View Dr. on the Hylebos Waterway. Their longtime plant on 11th St. had burned down and they moved to temporary quarters in the Port Industrial Yard. Construction began in early 1968 on a new shipyard situated on seven acres on Marine View Dr. This would enable Western Boat Building to construct boats up to 250 feet and permit the firm to complete dockside repairs on vessels of all sizes. Western Boat Building was owned and operated by the Petrich family with James F. Petrich as president. (TNT 1-28-68, C-21)

Weyerhaeuser Co. executives concluded the three day meeting in 1969 of sales managers from across the country with a banquet believed to have been held at the Winthrop Hotel. Signs promoting the "Big W Home Coming" were prominently displayed throughout the room. Nearly 100 sales managers had gathered to celebrate the solid year of sales from the wood products group. Weyerhaeuser Co. sales managers from all over the nation met for their "Big W Homecoming" using both the Winthrop Hotel and the University of Puget Sound in the early part of February, 1969. George H. Weyerhaeuser, president and chief executive officer, points out the large "W" on a men's jacket. The nearly 100 managers from the wood products group were in Tacoma for a three-day conference where they would discuss sales objectives, marketing strategies and recap 1968, the best sales year in the history of the wood products group. The "Anne M" was launched on Saturday night, June 14, 1969, at the J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp.'s yard on the City (now Thea Foss) Waterway. The 165-foot tuna seiner was the sister ship of the "Conquest," delivered the previous year. The "Anne M" will fish on behalf of Bumble Bee Seafoods in the Astoria waters. The contrast in size is readily apparent; the "Anna Maria," at 191 feet, was the largest tuna boat yet built and had a 1100-ton frozen fish capacity. Capt. Boat launching. The bow of the 165-foot tuna seiner, the "Anne M," looms over the guest speaker at her launching ceremonies on June 14, 1969. The "Anne M" is the sixth in a series built by the J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corporation. She has a 2800 h.p. diesel main engine and expects to exceed 14 knots. Carrying a crew of 14, she will be captained by Frank Souza of San Diego. Capt. Souza has been master and owner of several other tuna vessels including the "Mary S," "Southern Pacific," and "Antoinette B." The new seiner will be fishing out of Astoria, Oregon, for Bumble Bee Seafoods, a division of Castle and Cooke. Expected delivery to her new owners is late August of 1969. Photograph ordered by J.M. Water view of Pennwalt Corp. shortly after Christmas, 1969. By 1969, Pennwalt (formerly known as Pennsalt or Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. of Washington) had been operating in Tacoma for 40 years. The company was located on 40-acres of land in Tacoma's Tideflats along the Hylebos Waterway. A leader in chemical production, it would merge with Wallace & Tiernan to form Pennwalt Corp. in 1969. Exterior view of Pennwalt Corp. Formerly known as Pennsalt, the chemical producing company was located on 40 acres of land adjacent to the Hylebos Waterway. This view on December 26, 1969, shows one of the large piles of salt used by Pennwalt in daily operations. Doing business in Tacoma since 1929, Pennwalt had originally specialized in caustic soda and liquid chlorine for sale to the Pacific Northwest's pulp and paper industry before diversifying. Molten liquid is being poured into molds at Fick Foundry, 1005 East D Street, in October of 1969. In business since 1924, Fick Foundry were producers of "quality static and centrifugal castings in most ferrous metals, and close tolerance aluminum centrifugal castings."
