College of Puget Sound Advanced Journalism class gets a front line view of the world of newspaper publishing in the office of veteran publisher Sydney Albert Perkins on November 22, 1939. The students spent an hour interviewing Mr. Perkins on opportunities in the field of journalism and methods of story development. Standing, left to right, are Tacoma Times columnist E.T. Short, students Betty Thralls, Mary Mladinov, James Clymont, Carl Lindgren, Virginia Marinoff, Mr. Perkins (seated) and Betty Cleary. Seated left are William Melton, Eleanor Weaver, Clarice Ross and Helen Gassaman. One topic of conversation was the many autographed photos of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and national political figures on the walls, a souvenir of Perkins' days in Washington, D.C. where he served as private secretary to Senator Mark Hanna. Mr. Perkins had probably the finest collection of signed photographs in the country, including portraits of the most prominent men of the nation over the past two decades. (T. Big Buddy Day Marymount Military Academy. Norton Clapp, left, with tennis racket shakes hands with a young tennis player over the net on the academy's tennis courts. Building in background. Big Buddy Day was an annual event at the Academy where men and boys could participate in sports and programs together. The school had rigid standards in academics and athletics. The teacher-student ratio was 1-6. By 1974, the military designation and uniforms were dropped and the school became primarily a boarding school catering to the wealthy.

Tower of Central School Building. The eight story Gothic structure was built in 1912 from a design by the architectural firm of Heath and Gove. In the 1940's, it was still serving as a primary school. It is now the headquarters of the Tacoma School District. (T. Times 1/17/1941, pg. 13)

Harry Pitcher (kneeling, far left), the engineer in charge of construction of the new Clover Park High School shop building, supervised the laying of the cornerstone on March 10, 1941. The $16,000 shop building was part of the national defense education service project. It was financed 50-50 by the school district and the WPA. The building was scheduled to be completed in June, when the school would begin to conduct both day and night classes for enlisted men. Planned courses include metal and wood working, blueprint reading, machine drawing, pre-aviation and completion of high school studies. Clover Park was chosen as the location for the facility due to its proximity to Ft. Lewis, Camp Murray and McChord Airfield. Fife High School's hoopmen defeated Clover Park, 44 to 31, in an exciting game at Lakewood that packed the gymnasium. Racking up Fife's 11 to 1 winning season were: Spear, Rowe, Dreyer, Evancich and Vinson, along with substitutes Sakahar, Hamamishi, Herting, Wilcox and Shagami. (T. Times, 2/20/1941, p. 15).

The Rifle Club was designed to promote the correct use of firearms, both for recreation and in national defense. The Club, after the departure of their regular advisor, got a late start in the school year, but still managed to hold two matches with Marymount, losing one and tying the other. Beauties participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest sponsored by the Lincoln High School Music and Physical Education Departments on February 21, 1941 were also trying out for the 10 model roles in the upcoming original musical comedy "Of Men and Models." Night school classes at Lincoln High School. On Monday and Thursday nights, over 1700 adult students descended on local schools to take part in the 61 classes offered in night school. This appears to be a shop class, one of the most popular offerings. The two students listening intently to the instructor are identified as Bill English, kneeling, and Jack Clark. (T. Stadium High School's 1939 Tigers Baseball Team portrait. Three rows of young men dressed in various baseball uniforms.
