Tacoma Mayor Harry P. Cain, Major Gen. John P. Lucas, commander of the 3rd Division, and ex-Mayor J.J. Kaufman, now president of the Chamber of Commerce, at a chamber dinner for new executives of local businesses. The "welcome" dinner was held on October 27, 1941, at the Winthrop. Eleven-year-old Johnny Sheffield visited Tacoma in June, 1942, to help the War Bond drive. He is pictured here at the Winthrop Hotel with Pierce County War Bond Drive chairman Leon Titus. The woman with corsage next to Johnny is his mother, Mrs. Reginald Sheffield. Perched on the registration counter and examining a visitor's guide to Tacoma, Johnny is wearing the uniform of the Cub Scouts; his uniform is decorated with arrows and service badges. He apparently belonged to the Westwood location. Johnny was making a nationwide tour for the Treasury Department called "Buy Tanks for Yanks." He would be making a speech on "A Boy's Place in America" and be accompanied by a giant 13 ton tank, on display in front of the Roxy Theater. The 84 pound 6th grader was handpicked by Johnny Weissmuller to play "Boy" in eight Tarzan films before finally outgrowing the part. Actress Lana Turner arrives at the Winthrop Hotel in Titus Motor Company's 1923 Lincoln Touring automobile during her visit to Tacoma for a War Bond rally. Mayor Harry P. Cain is pictured between the actress and her mother. A large "Welcome! Lana Turner" banner is strung over the entrance of the Winthrop. The very popular Miss Turner made appearances at Fort Lewis, Seattle-Tacoma Shipyards, and the new Liberty Center downtown. She raised more than $120,000 in war bonds in 24 hours. Miss Turner was not the only celebrity appearing in Tacoma on behalf of the government; child actor Johnny Sheffield of the Tarzan films would be coming to town a few days later. As mayor, Harry P. Cain bought his fair share of tickets to benefits and balls. He is pictured here at the Hotel Winthrop on September 2, 1941, buying a ticket to the Army vs. Air Corps baseball game from Frank Gillihan of the Y.M.B.C., sponsors of the event. Morale Officers Capt. Cal Butterworth of the 41st Division and Capt. R.L. Bell of McChord Field look on. The game was played in the pouring rain at Athletic Park on September 9th. Annual meeting of the American Legion, Edward B. Rhodes Post's Last Man Club, Hotel Winthrop, on December 3, 1941. Three empty chairs are draped with American flags and 19 men sit and stand by them. The draped chairs are in honor of Club members who have died. The Club was organized December 5, 1938 by World War I veterans who were past Commanders of the Post. A bottle of 1917 Hennessey Five Star cognac was set aside for the last surviving member to drink a toast to his comrades. The first to die was Tacoma Mayor Dr. John Siegle on April 13, 1939. The sole survivor was Capt. Chester Chastek. By February of 1992, he had outlived all his fellow club members. He died February 23, 1997 at the age of 97.

Three Tacoma chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (the Mary Ball, Virginia Dare and Elizabeth Forey) enjoyed a delicious luncheon in the Hotel Winthrop's Crystal Ballroom when they honored Washington State Regent, Mrs. Starr Sherman of Walla Walla, on October 27, 1941. Seated above were Mrs. C.C. Mellinger, Mary Ball chapter regent, Mrs. Sherman, and Margaret Long, Elizabeth Forey chapter regent with the others in the photograph not identified. Mrs. Sherman was making an official visit to Tacoma and would later pay similar visits to Grays Harbor and Chehalis as well as northern chapters around the Sound. Metal Trades Convention for the Labor Advocate. On March 2, 1943, four unidentified men who were convention delegates stood behind a table with a blackboard behind them showing tally of votes for president of the Pacific Coast District Metal Trades Council. Incumbent Anthony Ballerini was defeated in a re-election bid by Ed Weston of Seattle. A banner states: "Affiliated with the A.F. of L." Held at the Hotel Winthrop in early March of 1943, the wartime convention was concerned with the metal trade councils' responsibility to deliver vital goods essential to allied victory. Delegates took an aggressive stand against the NLRB-CIO's disruption in the shipbuilding industry. Keynote speaker was John P. Frey, president of the A.F. of L. Fifth War Loan Campaign. Members of the Tacoma Advertising and Sales Club gathered for a luncheon at the Hotel Winthrop, where they were able to preview displays and receive an explanation of the techniques to be used in advertising and displaying the Fifth War Loan Campaign. Governor Arthur B. Langlie presents the Governor's Safety Trophy at awards ceremony during the pulp and paper industry's safety conference at the Winthrop Hotel. Longview Fibre Co. of Longview, Washington, was honored with the trophy for the lowest accident rate in the preceding year. The awards ceremony was held at the conclusion of the two-day Washington State Joint Labor-Management Safety Conference which was topped off by a banquet at the Winthrop on January 24, 1952. Governor Arthur B. Langlie presents a State Safety Award to John Sherman at the Pulp and Paper Industry's Safety Conference at the Winthrop Hotel. The award states that it is for "Meritorious Service in Industrial Safety." More than 200 persons attended the two-day Washington State Joint Labor-Management Safety Conference held at the Winthrop Hotel. Representatives attended the meeting from major pulp and paper firms, including Crown-Zellerbach Corp., and labor unions, including the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers and International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers. Rayonier, Inc., lumber company, skit at conference held at Winthrop Hotel. Eight men in front of factory mural. Rayonier manufactured cellulose products for rayon and acetate staple fibers in fabrics. However, the fastest growth occured in tire cord, cellophone and other uses entirely apart from textiles. Rayonier had been diversifying over a period of years hoping to be less affected by fluctuations of demand in the textile markets. Note: Lines in print due to diacetate film deterioration. The banquet meeting of the Washington Retailers' Club convention, March 19-20, 1951, in the Wedgewood room at the Winthrop Hotel. The convention was attended by the 30 Washington state member clubs, totaling over 200 high school age prospective retailers, who attended meetings to hear experienced businessmen discuss sales, merchandising and advertising methods.The banquet on Monday evening was the highlight where Eugene Ruffner, executive of the J.C. Penney Co., spoke on the subject "Opportunities for the student in retailing." The high school study program was intended to give interested students the opportunity to attend classes in the morning and then get on the job training at Tacoma stores. The program was offered in conjunction with Tacoma's vocational school program and most members were high school seniors. Mayor John Anderson is second from right on the front row. The Comus Club dance committee met in February 1951 to plan its annual Sweethearts Ball. The romantic soiree was held in the Winthrop Hotel's Wedgewood Room on February 17, 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Russ Michael, who chaired the event, and other members of the dance committee are dressed in formal attire with the women wearing fresh gardenias in their hair. Scottish Bagpipers and Scotty Nyles at the Winthrop Hotel. The entire pipe and drum band pose for their group portrait wearing their specific uniforms. The pipers wear white spats, carry a cape over their shoulders and the pockets of their jackets are decorated with white piping. The drummers wear lighter colored jackets with white belts and cross-pieces. One of the drummers wears an animal skin down his front to soften the weight of the largest drum. Three men in the center of the front row, possibly the drum majors, wear somewhat darker jackets, berets and dark socks.

Capital District of the Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs held their 1950 Christmas Show at the Hotel Winthrop. The show featured simulated doors to provide a background for a variety of door decorations for the home and window scenes were also shown as well as a table arranged for Christmas dinner. A separate feature was a Christmas workshop which offered all manner of wreaths, swags, table decor, hand-made candles, cones, pine and other Christmas greens to the public. Dinner honoring 25 year men. Standard Brands, Inc., Mr. George Adams. Veteran employees of Standard Brands, Inc., were honored at a dinner held at the Hotel Winthrop November 8, 1948, for the 25 employees in the Pacific Northwest who had been with the company 25 years or more.
