In one of its oddest parade turns, the Tacoma Safety Council presented the "Horror Parade," also called the Tacoma Safety Council Safety Show parade. The parade was intended to serve as a tragic reminder for reckless and careless drivers. The first prize winner was this wrecked automobile in tow with a dummy laying across seat. The sign says "Oh Why ! Didn't I Get My Brakes Repaired Yesterday?" Children on bicycles watch the macabre parade which traversed the main streets of Tacoma for two hours. (T. Times 2/26/1937, pg. 1)

John Sankovich of the City Garbage Department and Charlie Merchant and Gene Robinson of Cooney Transfer & Storage (left to right) muscled an upright piano onto a pile of rubbish and tin cans at the City dump. This worn-out piano was consigned to the dump by Myron Clinton of Clinton's Music House in late March of 1937. It was originally built in London nearly 100 years ago and cost nearly five times what a piano of its type would sell for in 1937. Mr. Clinton felt that no child should learn on a piano that was too dilapidated and was willing to dispose of more worn-out pianos as it became necessary. As the moving men drove away, inhabitants of the nearby "Hollywood on the (Tide)flats" shantytown swarmed over the discarded instrument to tear it apart for their own personal use. She and her modern dance troupe of 12 were met with enthusiasm by local residents. Proceeds from Miss Graham's appearance went to the Junior League's Well Baby Clinic project at the county hospital. A cropped and reversed version of this photograph can be found at D7505-6A. (T.Times 4-1-37, p. 3, 4-2-37, p. 8)

Martha Graham gracefully lifted her arms in an interpretive dance during a April 1, 1937, appearance sponsored by the Tacoma Junior League. Miss Graham, born on May 11, 1894, was already a major force in modern dance by 1937 having already performed in sixty concerts in New York alone. Accompanied by musical director Louis Horst, Miss Graham and her troupe of twelve American girls were received by an enthusiastic audience in the Jason Lee Auditorium; her dance "Lamentation, " created in 1930, being perhaps the most popular. Proceeds from Miss Graham's performance were earmarked for the Well Baby Clinic at the County Hospital, a project of the Tacoma Junior League. Miss Graham would dance and choreograph for over 70 years and received many honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She died on April 1, 1991, exactly 54 years after her Tacoma appearance. TPL-5108. ALBUM 8. (T.Times 4-1-37, p. 3, 4-2-37, p. 8)

Directional sign erected by the AAA, Automobile Club of Washington, as seen near the Sixth Ave. ferry site on April 9, 1937. The sign directs motorists to ferries departing for Fox Island, Point Fosdick, and Cromwell as well as mileage to the City of Fircrest (3 miles), Tacoma's City Center (6 miles) and the AAA Club (6 miles). Another sign to the right advertises the "Deep Sea Aquarium Steilacoom." Photograph taken for court evidence. Automobile traffic on ferries at this landing were being re-routed to Point Defiance at this time due to repairs being made at the landing. The ferries resumed regular schedules following the completion of the (undisclosed) repairs on April 12, 1937. The area may have been photographed because of the death of a driver the previous year when his car plunged off the ferry slip. A trial seeking damages from the county, ferry, and Washington Navigation Co. was held the week of April 22nd. The area near the Sixth Ave. ferry landing was photographed on April 9, 1937, for court evidence. This view, one of a series taken the same day, shows a directional signpost on the right, railroad crossing beyond, ferry slip, and two businesses on the left: the Bay View Cabaret and closer to the water, a rowboat rental/eatery. Repairs were nearly completed at the landing and regular schedules resumed by April 12th. Photographs taken may have been due to the damage suit brought against the county, Washington Navigation Co., and Skansie Ferry by the father of a deceased driver whose car had plunged into the Sound off the ferry slip in August of 1936.
