In January 1939, Paul (Sonny) Sceva, Jr., of Tacoma, was a member of the Pacific Coast ski champs, the Washington Huskies. At that time, he was one of the top skiers in the Pacific Northwest. He had won the Silver Skies race on Mt. Rainier in 1934, and was a reserve member on the U.S. Olympic ski team in Europe in 1937. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1941, and was a general contractor in Spokane from 1949-1970. Paul Sceva, Jr. died August 18, 1996 in Spokane. (T.Times, 1/18/1939, p. 7)

Paul (Sonny) Sceva, Jr., of Tacoma, is pictured skiing down a slope on Mount Rainier on January 18, 1939. He was a member of the Pacific Coast Conference champion ski team, the Washington Huskies. At that time, he was one of the top skiers in the Pacific Northwest. He had been a reserve member on the U.S. Olympic ski team in Europe in 1937 and had spent most of the 1937 winter in the Alps, competing in many races and placing high. Mr. Sceva would go on to graduate from the University of Washington in 1941. Sonny's father, Paul Sceva, Sr., was the manager of the Rainier National Park Company which operated the various concessions on the mountain including Longmire. Stadium High School 1939 Basketball Team. The team, under the direction of Coach V.G. Lowman, was on top of the Tacoma prep standings. Considered short for a basketball team, they made up for their lack of altitude with sheer attitude. The fighting Tigers, in at least six of their games, came from far behind to win. Team members are, front row left to right, Art DeMaris, Matt Kapovich, Bob Loftness, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich and Russ Soper. Back row, Dick Donelson, Dave Livingston, Dave Doud, Coach Lowman, Fred Angus, Warren Harvey and George Warfer. In February of 1939, the Tacoma Times ran this photograph of Lincoln High School swimming Coach Sheldon Brooks posed poolside with 24 members of the swim squad, the defending champions of Washington's prep ranks. The boys were, on the elevated portion, left to right, Harry Schramm, Bert Barber, Chuck Rohr, Don Ellis, Johnny Krutilla, Kenny Platzer, Bud Solum and Wallace Tuckey. Middle row: Coach Brooks, Bob Wheeler, Mel Malone, Tom Brotherton, Fred Mcneil, Roy Lindstrom, Harvey Berg and Walt Berry. Front Row: Leonard Hoveland, David Evans, Frank Maivliox, John Swanberg, Ed Ianson, Dale Slolum, Bob Reed, William Rohr and Joe Dowsett (seated.) The season soon came under a pall as 18 year old diver Robert Nack, absent when this picture was taken, died February 13, 1939 in a local hospital as he was being prepped for surgery on an abscess in his brain. Pictured are six of the seven Tacoma senior Girl Scouts who last year took a "gypsy trip" from Camp Wildwood in Portland, Oregon, to Camp Merriweather in Tillamook. The previous summer's trip took them from the Portland Girl Scout camp to Eugene Oregon and on to the coed Tillamook Camp, where they were the guests of the Boy Scouts. A similar trip is planned for August this year from local Camp St. Albans. The trip, as well as other St Albans innovations, will be financed by the "Cookie Crunch," Jan. 23-Feb. 6th, when the girls take advance orders for Girl Scout cookies. New to St. Albans this year will be a Pioneer Unit for senior girls, sailing trips for the Mariner division and the first time admission of Brownies to camp. The view down Pacific Ave from the intersection of around 17th Street, where the streetcar tracks intersect on the road. Most prominent are the Hotel Lewis, on the left, at 1522 Pacific Ave and Hotel Croft, on the right, at 1519 Pacific Ave. The Hotel Croft was owned by Lee Croft who would later become Pierce County Sheriff. Also on the right hand side can be seen Schoenfelds on Pacific at 15th and the Puget Sound Bank building at 1119 Pacific Ave. The photograph was taken to record the Schenley's Red Label billboard for Sunset Advertising in Seattle.

The storefront in the Sprague Block, 1511-41 Pacific Ave., housing the Lutheran Welfare Society Mission and store. The address for the Mission was 1525-27 Pacific Ave. Later in the early 1940's, it became the Lutheran Service Club for soldiers. The Sprague Block was demolished in the late 1960's. The extension of the block at 1501-09 Pacific Ave. is now known as the Sprague Building. (filed with Argentum)

Members of the Tacoma and Puyallup chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. In 1939, Lloyd Suiter Tires added tire recapping to its many services, making the plant one of the largest in the Northwest handling this kind of work. Here Andrew Jorgersen, Tacoma Department of Public Works and superintendent of city streets, poses with Fred Hand, Suiter salesman, next to the large Lodi section mold. Jorgersen is studying the process for the Public Works fleet. In recapping, tires with worn treads are rebuilt, adding more tread over the original casing.
