On May 1, 1939, as the orchestra played "Pomp and Circumstance," eighteen senior girls gowned in pastel formals advanced bearing ribbons to form an aisle from Old Main to the May Queen throne. Queen Vivian Lunde, preceded by the ladies of her court, marched in procession.

Library Building at Pacific Lutheran College, now Xavier Hall. Building designed by Tacoma Architect Emanuel J. Bresemann, firm of Heath, Gove and Bell, in 1937. The college broke ground on the building on May 1, 1937 and it was dedicated two years later. (T.Times, 5/2/1939, p. 4)

Pacific Lutheran College 1939 May Day festivities. Queen Vivian Lunde pictured on her throne surrounded by her court. Queen Vivian was a member of the graduating class of the Normal department of the college. The throne faced the entrance of the college. It was a traditional silver chair backed by a lattice of spring flowers with tall baskets of Dogwood, Apple blossoms, lilac and palms. Included in the Queen's court were High school attendants Barbara Xavier and Betty Jo Forster, Freshmen Anne Lassen and Lenore Rasmussen, Sophomores Carol Haavik and Caroline Hoff and Seniors Ruth Downton and Aagot Gerde. 1939 Pacific Lutheran College May Day Queen, Vivian Lunde, makes her traditional procession from Old Main to her throne. She is attended by three young girls, Mary Olson, Barbara DeBerry and Constance Hanson in period gowns of pastel organdy. Queen Vivian I is wearing a gown of white net over taffeta with a full skirt. It is topped by a white lace jacket with pearl studded flowers. Her bouquet is made of pink roses and snap dragons. Tacoma Mayor Joseph J. Kaufman received some advice on his grip from Dora Mae Rice while Gretchen Kunigk watched on May 3, 1939. A special "hole-in-one" competition was being held at the Allenmore Golf Course to raise money to send a four-man team of Tacoma golfers to the national public links meet to be held in Baltimore, Maryland. The golfer who could sink a "hole-in-one" on the special 115 yard hole set up for the competition would win a shiny, new Buick. Dora Mae was a figure skater; she went on to become a Northwest ice dancing champion and a judge in Olympic skating. Gretchen went on to win the first U.S. medal in Olympic skiing. (T. The new Buick in the background would be awarded to any contestant who aced the hole. Mr. Faulk owned the Bonded Adjustment Corporation which was located in the Perkins Building. (T. This May 1939 advertising photograph shows the wide range of Ford commercial vehicles sold by Titus Motor Co. on display in front of the Victorian style Seymour Conservatory at Wright Park. The glass conservatory, one of only three on the West Coast, was a gift to the citizens of Tacoma by Tacoman businessman William W. Seymour. The building, designed by I.J. Knapp, opened in November of 1908 and gave the average Tacoman their first glance at the foliage of the tropics. In 1938, Leon Titus, a 25 year veteran in the automotive sales business, got his foot in the door in Tacoma by being awarded the downtown dealership of Ford, Ford Mercury and Lincoln Zephyr. The dealership moved into the old Pacific Car Co. building at 618-624 Broadway, where they remained until the mid 1960's. As a boy, Leon Titus had worked for the Marmon-Nordyke Co., manufacturer of the Marmon automobile. The Titus family is still heavily involved in the automotive business today. On May 3, 1939, newlyweds Lloyd and Irene Williamson paused in their preparations to pose for the Tacoma Times. The pair were leaving on a working honeymoon to Ketchikan, Alaska, on Lloyd's 34 foot salmon trolling craft, the Eny Echo. The groom had been fishing for salmon off Cape Flattery, Vancouver Island and Alaska for several years by himself. This year he was accompanied by his new bride, but still planned to work 16-20 hours a day while aboard. His wife, the former Irene King, was a landlubber and had never been out on the ocean. Newlyweds Lloyd and Irene Williamson posed on his 34 foot craft, the Eny Echo, as they prepared to leave May 3, 1939 on their working honeymoon to Alaska. The pair would spend their honeymoon trolling for salmon in the Alaska waters. Although her husband had worked as a professional fisherman for several years, Mrs. Williamson, the former Irene King, had never been on the ocean before. Lloyd Williamson was no stranger to the Tacoma Times. As the Times champion, he represented Tacoma at the national marble championships in 1923. At the national contest, he was crowned the Pacific Coast Regional champ and won 3rd place in the national playoffs. During the contest, he authored a series of letters that ran in the Times. This Elizabethan-style brick building at 616-24 Broadway in downtown Tacoma was designed by Roland Borhek. Built for the Pacific Car Co. in 1919, it was taken over in 1938 by the Titus Motor Co. In recent years it has been home to several car rental dealers. Roland E. Borhek was the primary architect for many Tacoma buildings including the Rialto Theater and Jason Lee Intermediate School.

This Tacoma trio is leaving by automobile for a pair of medical conventions in St. Louis, Missouri. They are, left to right, Annabell Norton, photographer for the pathology clinic at Tacoma General Hospital, Dr. Benjamin T. Terry, pathologist, and Mrs. Alice Kern, technician and secretary to Dr. Terry. Dr. Terry is the originator of the latest method of rapid razor diagnosis of cancer. The trio have prepared exhibits, which they will explain at the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, May 11-14, and the convention of the American Medical Association, May 15-19, 1939. (T.
