This front-on view of the exterior of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with scaffolding set against its spire was taken on May 16, 1949, just a month after the devastating earthquake that damaged many buildings in the Puget Sound region, including some of the parish buildings. The gothic style church with its tall 54-foot steeple (270 feet from the ground to the top of the cross) dominates the city's skyline for long distances. A fire swept through Tacoma Powdered Metals plant, which completely destroyed an unused frame structure, no one was injured. The destroyed building was valued at $25,000, it was located next to Buffelen Lumber Company. A Tacoma fire boat, six engine companies, city police, light, water and gas crews responded to the alarms (T.N.T., 5/4/49, p. 1).

Church members working on new church, Latter Day Saints, L.C. Seal. Volunteers from the Tacoma Central Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, spent their 1949 Memorial Day holiday working on their new church at South 4th and L Streets. The church was now more than two-thirds completed. Included in the photograph are Bishop Franklin Harris, B.E. Anderson, architect, and Leslie C. Seal, building superintendant and financial chairman. Louie Grenier's Orchestra was about to begin playing at the Top of the ocean club and restaurant. The orchestra and their leader would also be participating in Tacoma's annual Musician's Ball at the Century Ballroom. The Tacoma Painters Union Local Number 64 has just finished painting the exterior of the Boys Club facilities at 711 South 25th St. in May of 1949. In a remarkable example of goodwill, the job was done without charge. The 30 painters donated their labor and painted 18,000 square feet of surface. Supervision and equipment was donated by ten contractors from the Tacoma Painting Contractors' Association and paint was donated by eleven local paint stores. Apprentice painters received experience by priming the building, again at no cost to the Tacoma Boys Club. (TNT 5-9-49, p. 3)

Crust breaking machine at Permanente, Bill Gorman. A specialized machine has been manufactured to perform the work that had previously been done manually. A crust would form at the openings to the reduction pots where alumina was melted into raw pig aluminum. On Tuesday May 17, 1949 the McDonald residence was moved by Rainbow Contractors, 3601 South Lawrence Street, from Salmon Beach to a section of land near Point Fosdick. Both this house, and the Streich residence were moved due to the threat of landslides. Residents of Salmon Beach, a small community on the edge to The Narrows just south of Point Defiance Park, were ordered to move because the April 13, 1949 earthquake that shook the whole Puget Sound region had made the cliff that towered over them unstable. In May of 1949, St. Patrick's Church, 1123 No. J St., was photographed outlined against the spring sky. The Catholic church was designed by architect Frederick Heath, and built in 1906 of stone. It replaced the original wooden church which served the Old Town section of Tacoma for 13 years before being destroyed by fire in 1905. The first services in the new church were held on Christmas Day, 1906, although the church was later dedicated in June of 1907. A bell tower graces one corner of the church and a rose window is centered above the main doors. The doors and windows are arched. St. Patrick's Parochial School can be seen on the far right. A.E. Mulligan Motor Company. A woman is operating the electrically driven convertible top of a 1947 Studebaker Commander to either put up or take it down while a gentleman is seeing her off. The switch is located under the dash on the left side. The convertible has wide white-walled tires and the chromed rear bumper is gleaming. The car is parked outside Wright Park.
