The family of Adam Benston gathers to celebrate the 93rd birthday of the family patriarch. The party is being held at the Spanaway home of Adam and Sarah Benston (seated center of front row.) To the right of Sarah is the couple's grandniece Jean Plewak, who celebrated her 5th birthday on the day before. Adam and Sarah had been married 66 years. Adam was born near Fort Nisqually in 1846; Sarah was born on the Nisqually Plains in 1855 and is 84 years old. (Winston: "Early Spanaway"; T.Times 11/27/1939, pg. 14)

Adam Benston plays the fiddle for his grandniece, five year old Jean Plewak, at the celebration for his 93rd birthday on November 26, 1939. Adam was born near Fort Nisqually in 1846. He learned to play the fiddle as a boy and provided the music for many pioneer gatherings. He was known as one of the foremost fiddlers in the Puget Sound area. When his children came along, he taught them music and the family soon formed a small ensemble that played at local entertainments. (Winston: "Early Spanaway"; T. Times 11/27/1939, pg. 14)

The Board of Business Representatives poses at Jack's Griddle in their Jubilee hats. From July 16-23, 1939, Tacoma celebrated the 50th anniversary of Washington's statehood in a big way. Jack's Griddle was a restaurant at 912-14 Commerce St. owned by Jack Staley. It had been in business for 22 years. (T. Times 7/20/1939, pg. 8- names of labor leaders in caption)

The new Hylebos Bridge was still under construction when the east leaf was hit by the 2,000 ton steamer "Point San Pablo" on April 5, 1939. The span was initially sprung 4 to 5 feet out of line, but it sprang back all but 10 inches of the distance. The bridge was dedicated in May of 1939. This second Hylebos Bridge replaced a single-leaf, bascule drawbridge that had been built in 1925. The Hylebos Bridge became disabled in January of 2001, and has been stuck in the upright position ever since. (T. Times 4/6/1939 p.18)

With the end of summer vacation rapidly approaching, Francis Browne, a "soda jerk" at one of the soda fountains in Tacoma, sold a triple decker ice cream cone to Albert Bellandi, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bellandi, in August of 1939. Aaron A. Robbins, president and general manager of Olympic Dairy Products Company. It was at Olympic Dairy where Robbins' son Irvine (Irv) learned the ice cream business, and subsequently founded Baskin-Robbins. (T. Times, 3/30/1939, p.7).

Billboard advertising Centennial Flour on Tacoma Avenue South at Division, ordered by Sunset Advertising Company. In 1939, Centennial was celebrating their 50th year in operation. Centennial was located in Tacoma on Schuster Parkway, next to Sperry Mills. It was destroyed by fire in January of 1947. Andrienne, famous handwriting analyst and graphologist, posed with developer and civic leader Norton Clapp in his office, looking at a handwriting sample. Andrienne, known only by the single name, is a practitioner of the exact science of determining personality traits by observing handwriting. She has been hired by the Tacoma Times to tell readers secrets hidden from them that are loudly told in their handwriting. The Commerce Street Business Men's Club Dog Parade was held on April 22, 1939. The only requirements to enter were that kids had to be under 16 and have a dog. Over 1,000 kids turned out to parade, viewed by many times that number parents and well wishers. The Grand prize winner, Shirley King (2nd from right) is pictured with her 14-year-old dog Bummer; runner-up Donald Grassfield (right) holds the collar of his German shepherd. (T. In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. In the front row, left to right, are Eva Nomellini, Carmella Pupo, Rose Pellegrini, Mobel Monaldi, Kate Lanza and Lena Reda. 2nd row, Rose Furaco, Mary Recona, Mary Carbone, Esther Reda, Elvira Salatino, Rose Colombini and Caroline Turco. Rehearsals for the Drama League play "Stage Door" at the Little Theater. The characters are, left to right, Antonio de Basto Lello as typical Hollywood producer Mr. Gretzl, Creighton Flynn as Hollywood scout David Kingsley, and Florence Skeels as hopeful young actress Terry. Miss Skeels had previously performed with the Portland Civic Theater, the Seattle Repertory and at the University of Southern California. The play, written by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman, would be presented at the Little Theater off Carr St. Sept 27-30, 1939. It was set in the "Footlights Club" in New York City, a boarding house for striving actresses. The play had been presented originally at the Music Box Theater in NYC in autumn of 1936 to critical acclaim. The production and its cast of 27 was well received in Tacoma. (T.
