Tacoma Drug Company's new facilities had an ultra modern warehouse, complete with open shelf stock arrangements and over 60,000 square feet of space. The building had a sound proof room with a punch card tabulating system for perpetual inventory control and pre-printing invoices. Tacoma Drug Company was the first drug company to use this type of system. The new facility's shipping department was large enough to handle six trucks at one time; the new offices would be able to handle large quantity incoming and outgoing orders. Most of the Wollander Farwest Homes built were two bedroom family homes in Tacoma and the surrounding area. The January 1949 Tacoma Times advertised two and three bedroom houses, some furnished, in various areas of the city, for prices ranging from $3,600 to $7,500. Tacoma and its surrounding communities were growing rapidly and housing construction was in great demand. After World War II ended, many small 2 and 3 bedroom homes were built to accommodate the new families. In 1948 Fife's Schools, District # 88, occupied a large campus of buildings on 20th Street East just east of 55th Avenue East. The four major buildings in the complex had been built over a period of 22 years. From left to right are: Fife High School, built in 1930; the Fife Civic Auditorium built in 1924, which served as both a public gathering place and the school gymnasium; the old Fife school, which was built in 1914 and by 1948 was being used for vocational training; and (at the far right) the new Fife Elementary School, which was built in 1936. In 1949 the Fife School District built a new high school, dedicated in 1950.

Chapin Foster became the manager of the Washington State Historical Society after the death of William P. Bonney. Mr. Foster suggested a permanent display of photographs and large transparencies that would show how this part of the Northwest, developed as "North Oregon", became the Washington territory and the territory became Washington State. S.A. Perkins, president of the Society approved the idea and the show opened January 23, 1949. (T.Times, 1/23/1949, p.2)

Plane crash, Mt. Rainier Ordnance Depot, photo ordered by Sandegren of the Tacoma Times. Two Army Air Force flyers were killed when the F-82 twin-engine fighter plane they were flying crashed and burned in the storage area of the Mount Rainier Ordnance Depot at Fort Lewis on February 23, 1949. Air Force officers are seen examining the debris for clues to the cause of the crash. One engine had "conked out" before the plane hit the ground. Tracer bullets and 50-caliber machine gun ammunition exploded at intervals as fire fighters attempted to check the fiercely burning plane. (T.Times, 2/24/1949, p.1) TPL-10357

Cutting a 1,000 pound cake at Big Bear Store, Big Bear Store, Don Taylor. A five-tier cake stands next to a towering display of cake mix inside the Big Bear Store on February 17, 1949. A teddy bear sits on top of the enormous cake made with Swans Down Instant cake mix. The Big Bear grocery store was celebrating its first anniversary with many promotions including free Wood's coffee and slices of this enormous cake. The cake was 5-ft. by 8-ft. at its base and rose to a height of over 5 1/2 feet. Even more enticing to shoppers was the chance to win valuable prizes--inside the cake were encapsuled prize slips which entitled winners to a $400 television set, free coffee makers and free shopping bags full of groceries from Big Bear. Two young men stand with the enormous cake made with Swans Down Instant cake mix and Medosweet milk created especially for the first anniversary of the Big Bear grocery store on February 17, 1949. The cake was 5' x 8' at the base and stood over 5 1/2 feet high. It took over 120 pounds of icing to cover the cake. Inside the cake were prize slips in capsules which entitled the winner(s) to a $400 television, free coffee makers and shopping bags full of groceries. Kitchen crew at Bonneville Hotel at 12th Night Dinner, Bonneville Hotel, Mrs. Fyte. The kitchen staff at the Bonneville Hotel are busy serving up plates and platters of food in February of 1949. Stacks of plates are in the center of the work area and large containers of food are lined up ready to fill plates. Originally known as the Hotel Rochester when constructed in 1888, it became the Bonneville Hotel in 1906. It was demolished in 1966.

Two members of the Rhodes Post No. 2, American Legion demonstrated the proper way to fold the flag of the United States to the boys of Boy Scout Troop 55. In February of 1949, to celebrate National Boy Scout Week, the Legion presented three flags to the Salishan Boy Scout troop on behalf of the management of the Salishan housing project. A lunch counter is seen along the right side of the cafe and a cigar counter is on the left. A man is seen sitting in a chair at a table through a doorway towards the back. This is possibly 10513 Steilacoom Lake Drive South West where the Devlin's were shown to live in 1951.

Patient at Mountain View Sanatorium, TB League, Adele Faber. "Every person in Tacoma should have an x-ray taken," according to Gerald Duckett, age 44, who was a victim of tuberculosis. He submitted to a test two years earlier in 1947 and was found to be in good shape. An x-ray taken a year later found him with advanced tuberculosis, however. Mr. Duckett had been working in the Hanford Atomic Energy project in Richland prior to his stay at the sanatorium. (T.Times, 3/1/1949, p.2)

The club had organized the school two years earlier and had an enrollment of 28 as of 1949.
