Ray Gamble banquet at Rau's Chicken Dinner Inn located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and John's Orchard Hill (the Mountain Highway). Ray Gamble was born in Lexington, Nebraska, and arrived in Tacoma in a boxcar in 1892. His was a rags-to-riches story. He started in business opening a fish market in 1913 and developed the world's largest wood flour business which furnished stabilizing materials for the explosives manufacturers. He owned several pieces of real estate including the exclusive Casa Blanca Apartments. He was also well known for his hobbies of collecting elephant statues and performing magic. Rau's Club was opened March 2, 1939. In August 1946 the name was changed to the "Country House Restaurant". (TNT 7/27/1941, p. A2; Genii, March, 1939)

An automobile collided with a Northern Pacific train near the Shaffer Terminals on Commencement Bay in April 1946. Two people were seriously injured and rushed to Tacoma General Hospital. The train engineer stated that the train was travelling 20 miles per hour, the driver of the car must have felt that they had plenty of time to cross the tracks. They both read a note sent upon this most happy occasion. The bride's veil allows a glimpse of her white satin gown. She is holding her bouquet of white carnations and stephanotis. In January of 1946, a group of unidentified Red Cross volunteers met the troop ships bringing returning soldiers with baskets of doughnuts and bottles of milk. Because of a shortage of troop trains in the Pacific Northwest to transport soldiers to their discharge centers, and do to a lack of housing, thousands of soldiers had to stay aboard ship in the Port of Tacoma. Interior of Frost and Margaret Snyder's home. A view of the entry way. A clock hangs next to the front door. The house was designed by architect, F.A. Sexton and built in 1890. The early inhabitants included Lois D. Campbell, an early mayor of Tacoma, Alec "King of the Klondike" McDonald and Judge W.H. Snell. The house was destroyed in 1956. Frost Snyder had succeeded to president of Clear Fir Lumber Company from his father, John Snyder. He was also president of Vancouver Plywood and Veneer Company and a member of the Board of Directors of Puget Sound National Bank. Frost Snyder was born in 1892 and died in 1971.

An oval mirror and frame are built into the surround together with a shelf for small items over the mantel and turnings at either side. A sofa and easy chairs flank the fireplace. A desk and chair back up to the sofa. A three-armed chandelier is shown along with a sconce on the far wall between the large windows.

The staff of the Progressive Italian-American Club stand behind the clubs newly modernized bar. The PIA Club was about to celebrate their remodeling by hosting a complimentary buffet luncheon for fraternal and social members and the press. The club, at 739 St. Helens, had been totally remodeled, at a cost of over $70,000 - almost twice the original budget. Rocco Manza, the club manager, and Frank A. Reda, the social chairman, had made elaborate preparations for the event. The same location was later home to Honan's Restaurant. (T. Times, 3/14/46, p. 9).

By April of 1946 the Curtis Publishing Company was one of the largest magazine distributors in Tacoma. Their magazine rack in the Pay Less Drug Store at 930 Broadway featured some titles we still recognize such as Time, Newsweek, and Esquire, and many others that are no longer published. They also carried a wide variety of detective and movie magazines. Customers were requested to pay for their magazines at either the candy or tobacco counters.

An elevated view of two tug boats maneuver log booms through an island studded portion of Puget Sound. Log booms are made by connecting the outside logs to one another with cable while the interior logs are floating free. This is the traditional method of transporting a large number of logs in the northwest waters. The logs in the left front are very large. TPL-9245
