ca. 1946. Retirement photograph of Wallace E. (W.E.) Difford, managing director and moving force of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. In 1938, when Difford became managing director of the DFPA, he was already known as the "Doctor." He obtained this nickname by leading various businesses out of failure and into the profit side of the ledger. He was a dynamic and energetic leader, with a reputation for innovations in marketing, sales promotion and merchandising. He took on the ailing plywood industry and created a giant. He sent trained salesmen into the field to sell plywood as a product. He grouped all the mills under a joint inspection and grading system, with its own registered trademark. He established two labs, one in Tacoma and one in Eugene, to test and improve the product. Business boomed. In the summer of 1946, Difford resigned from the DFPA to enter private business. His resignation was accepted by the management committee "with great regret." In 1952, two directors later, the industry was once again leveling off and the committee sent for the "Doctor." In the fall of 1952, Difford returned to head up the DFPA once again. ("The Plywood Age" Robert M. Cour)

This photograph, taken June 11, 1946, shows workers installing the 160 foot trusses that supported the roof over the Tacoma Ice Arena at 3801 So. Union. At that time, only the Boeing plant in Seattle had a roof with longer trusses. The arena, with its barrel arched roof, had a capacity of 4,000 seats for hockey matches. After it was abandoned as an ice arena, numberous boxing matches were staged there. On March 20, 1986, just short of 40 years after it was installed, part of the roof collapsed when several of the beams failed. TPL-8834

President-elect of the Philippines, Manuel Acuna Roxas, watches as his host, Col. A.S.Strickland, tops off his cup of coffee. Mr. Roxas and his party of eleven, including U.S. High Commissioner, Paul V. McNutt, were on their way to Washington D.C. for a conference with President Truman. They had made a brief stop at McChord Field for refueling on May 8, 1946. Even though the Air Force base was given warning of the visit only hours before the big transport actually arrived, press and cameras were on hand immediately to photograph the arrival and subsequent meal. In his prepared speech at the conclusion of the breakfast, Mr. Roxas praised General Douglas MacArthur for the outstanding job in restoring the Philippines to the Filipinos. Although Mr. Roxas did not answer individual questions, he did state his purpose in journeying to Washington D.C. was to offer both military support and the placement of military bases on Filipino soil. He called America the "motherland of world democracy" and indicated his country's appreciation for its help in the fight against aggression. (TNT 5-9-46, p. 1) ALBUM 3.
