ca. 1979. Antique barber chair in an unidentified barbershop, circa 1979. Decorations on the wall feature barber poles and the slogan "Ask for Wildroot." Wildroot Cream Oil hair tonic was preferred by barbers and comic strip character Dick Tracy. By the late seventies when this picture was taken, these items would already be collector's items.

ca. 1979. The ornate outline of the Samson Hotel, 1152-56 Fawcett Ave., shows clearly against a more modern office building in this Cysewski picture from 1979. The Hotel was built in 1889 from a design by F.A. Sexton and was converted to apartments in 1928. After several fires, the building was demolished in 1989. The site, in 2007, is a vacant lot.

Marlene Tenzler is just waiting for the auctioneer to auction off Bullwinkle and his friends, because she said she has five grandchildren. The public auction was held in the former Bullwinkle's Family Food N Fun theater and restaurant at 2424 S. 320th St. in Federal Way today.
She didn't buy the moose. Winning bidder spent more than $4,000 for the sculptured pieces and equipment.

A Griffin Fuel Company driver filled the heating oil tank at the Sears Exhibition Home at 1920 North Union Avenue on October 9, 1937, the day before the house opened for public viewing. The building was not a Sears "kit" house. It was designed by Stanley T. Shaw, architect, and built with material purchased in the Tacoma area. By building this demonstration house, Sears hoped to show what could be done locally to create a modern, comfortable and convenient home. All the furnishings throughout the building's eight rooms were supplied by Sears, as were the heating, electrical and plumbing supplies. Over three October Sundays, nearly 16,000 people toured the house. (T. Times, 10/9/1937, p. 5)

On November 13, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. King posed with a 50 year old painting, an heirloom, which they were able to save from their room during the fast moving fire at the Golden Hotel on Pacific Ave. in Bremerton. Most of their other belongings were lost to the fire. The fire started in the kitchen of the ground floor Golden Cafe and quickly spread to the living quarters above. For Bremerton Sun. Rosalie Wale, who owned the Arctic Dairy at 534 Fourth St. in Bremerton with her husband, was photographed making ice cream in their store with the help of a special ice cream freezer. Mrs. Wale balanced her day between taking care of her home and helping her husband in his business. She was featured in the Bremerton Sun's August 12, 1936 "Around the Clock" feature, an appropriate title because her work day began before 8 am and finished after 9 or 10 at night. Mrs. Wale, the former Rosalie Greathouse, was born in Anacortes and attended high school in Mount Vernon. (Bremerton Sun 8-12-1936, pg. 1)

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor celebrated its grand opening on May 21, 1974, with dignitaries enjoying a bite of red licorice instead of the traditional red ribbon snipping. Located in the west end portion of the Tacoma Mall, Farrell's offered delicious hamburgers and other delicacies as well as mountains of ice creams in many flavors. It was an old fashioned ice cream parlor, believed to be the 84th in a large chain. Food was not served sedately but with much horn blowing and drum beating, especially for soon-to-be popular birthday parties. Color photograph ordered by Gerber Advertising, Portland. ca. 1934. Photograph is described in Richards' notes as "group at Rausch's Road House." However, associated pictures also show a sign on the building proclaiming that it is "Jay's Log Cabin, Dine & Dance." A group of people is seated in front of the log cabin. Group includes a young couple to the left of the seated row dressed alike in slacks, white shirts and sweaters and a woman in the standing row wearing a "Andre's Market" brown paper bag as a hat.
