ca. 1979. Antique barber chair in an unidentified barbershop, circa 1979. Decorations on the wall feature barber poles and the slogan "Ask for Wildroot." Wildroot Cream Oil hair tonic was preferred by barbers and comic strip character Dick Tracy. By the late seventies when this picture was taken, these items would already be collector's items.

ca. 1979. The ornate outline of the Samson Hotel, 1152-56 Fawcett Ave., shows clearly against a more modern office building in this Cysewski picture from 1979. The Hotel was built in 1889 from a design by F.A. Sexton and was converted to apartments in 1928. After several fires, the building was demolished in 1989. The site, in 2007, is a vacant lot.

ca. 1979. Mosaic tile work in front of the lot where the Maple Leaf Hotel was formerly located, 1546-48 Broadway. The Maple Leaf was last listed under that name in 1911; the building was demolished in 1957.

Marlene Tenzler is just waiting for the auctioneer to auction off Bullwinkle and his friends, because she said she has five grandchildren. The public auction was held in the former Bullwinkle's Family Food N Fun theater and restaurant at 2424 S. 320th St. in Federal Way today.
She didn't buy the moose. Winning bidder spent more than $4,000 for the sculptured pieces and equipment.

This group portrait was taken in August of 1925 of the annual National Bank of Tacoma picnic at DeKoven Inn in Lakewood. DeKoven Inn was located on the east side of Lake Steilacoom, about 30 minutes from Tacoma. The photograph is of a large group of people seated at three picnic tables placed among fir trees, with a house, tent, outbuilding, and water tower in background. The Inn itself, which was formerly a boys' school, burned down on August 2, 1925. The dance and banquet hall was saved and became the new center of operation, catering primarily to day parties. Much of the land previously occupied by the Inn was subdivided and sold as lots for summer homes. (WSHS) (TNT 8/13/1925, pg. 23)

ca. 1926. Interior of Hill Shoe Shop, 781 Broadway, in the Winthrop Hotel. The store was owned by Edwin F. Hill. Rattan chairs and tables are available for customers, as well foot stools for salesmen to use for trying shoes on customers. Several baskets of flowers decorate the room, this might indicate a Grand Opening. (WSHS)

ca. 1926. Winthrop Hotel, circa 1926, same sitting room as in A1301 image 1, the sitting room of the Presidential Suite. Writing desk that folds up into cabinet against wall right. The suite was finished in mahogany with paneled plastered walls.(filed with Argentum)

Over 300 telephones scheduled to be installed at the new Hotel Winthrop posed around the two person switchboard. A desk telephone will stand on a table in each guest room. The Winthrop is the first hotel in Tacoma to have this type of instrument furnished throughout. The installation will require over 71 miles of lines, running through a 2 ft x 4 ft shaft extending perpendicularly from the basement to the private branch switchboard on the roof garden floor. ca. 1925. In 1925, McKinley Hill had a thriving business community, with locally owned shops and stores lining its sidewalks. Pictured left to right at 3504 McKinley Ave. are Porter's Barber Shop (owned by Ollie B. Porter), Central Shoes (A. Don Soper) and "Gents Furnishings" (Chester & Olsen). 3502B McKinley appears to be vacant and on the right, at 3502 A McKinley, is the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. In 1928, Mr. Porter, the barber, had the Porter Apartments constructed at this location. Although the newspaper doesn't specify this, it appears that the two stories of apartments were built on top of this commercial space. E. Taylor Gardner, of 3618 E "L", was the architect and contractor for the Porter Apartments. (WSHS)
