On November 21, 1938, Charles and Marian Bedford celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with 200 friends and relatives at their home. They lived at 3718 South M Street. They were married November 21, 1888, in Minneapolis and came to Tacoma in 1899. (T. Times, 11/26/1938, p. 9)

Bellarmine High School Midget Football Team. Bellarmine, coached by Leo Eckstein, won the city championship in 1938, 14 to 7 against Lincoln High School. Midget class players were 132 pounds and under. The last city midget championship was played in 1940. The Crystal Ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop was the site of the November 25, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance. One couple sitting on edge of table catch-up on events with another couple who is just arriving. Streamline formals seem to have been popular that year as well as marcelled hairdos. (T. 64-year-old Joseph H. Beidler, former Staff Sergeant of the State Champion 148th Field Artillery Band, studies his honorable discharge papers. He is being automatically discharged from the Washington Guard for age after 20 years of service. Staff Sgt. Beidler is the second man to remain in the enlisted ranks of the Washington Guard long enough to retire. Beidler, a bandsman all the way back to the Gay 90's, came to Tacoma 30 years ago and went to work for Carstens Packing Co. Exempt from military service, he joined the Service Battery of the 3rd Washington Infantry when it was organized in 1918. Its purpose was to provide local forces to replace those sent into federal service with the national army. Since that time, he has served continuously. (T. Times 11/28/1938, pg. 16)

On November 30, 1938, with the contracts awarded and construction assured, the "Narrows Bridge Gang" held their final meeting at the Winthrop Hotel. The group representing all parts of the city had formed in January of 1936 and held weekly luncheon meetings. Their purpose was to urge the construction of a bridge across the Narrows. Young Tacoma students make history come to life. Mrs. Marie Kuhl's 5th grade class at Oakland concluded their study of early American pioneers by building replicas of the past. Included are miniature covered wagons, block houses and log cabins. They were built by the 10 year old students at home. In December of 1938, the Lincoln High School band and their director Frank Anarde (left) posed for the first time as a whole group in their new uniforms. The band looked forward to the holidays after a successful season of public appearances. Many would take part in the choir and glee clubs' upcoming Christmas program. (T. On December 3rd, 1938, The Golden Jubilee was brought to a close with a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, where 600 Shriners from 12 temples gathered to commemorate the founding of Tacoma's Afifi Temple. Honored were the "Old Timers," those who were members before 1900 and helped to grow the membership from 8 to the current 2,000. Annie Wright Seminary annual doll bazaar. The Doll Bazaar, held in the Great Hall, is part of the girls' holiday mission work. The upper school designs the exhibits which are judged for beauty, originality and individuality. Special awards are given for best dressed and best character. Completed fish ladder at the Steilacoom culvert. On December 6, 1938 the men responsible for its construction gathered around the concrete tunnel built under a road. They are, left, workmen Ward Dunn and Fred Brehan and, right, Bill Gaul, County District Supervisor, and Milo C. Bell, chief engineer for the state fisheries. State law demanded the construction of the ladder designed by Mr. Bell. For years, salmon and trout on spawning runs were denied access to Steilacoom Lake and its feeder Clover Creek, resulting in high losses. (T. Times 12/9/1938, pg. 14)
