Benbow Lakes, Red Cross Aquatic School for the Northwest, 75 men and 56 women. The Red Cross Pierce County Chapter held a 10-day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes, Kapowsin, Washington. It was one of six such schools operated by the Red Cross in the United States. The canoe in this photograph has been identified as a Willits canoes, built by Earl and Floyd Willits at their shop on Day Island. The canoe features a full sailing rig also built by the brothers. Rainbow Convention. Seven Rainbow girls are seated in the middle of the auditorium with older persons standing behind them waiting for the ceremony to continue. A large audience is seated around the edges of the auditorium and in the balcony. The installation of newly elected 1948 grand officers marked the end of the Rainbow Girls' 21st session. Rainbow Convention. Rainbow girls kneel wearing smocks and holding candles for a candle-light ceremony. The honorary degree, Grand Cross of Color, which is conferred on those who have given outstanding service to Rainbow was given to 125 Rainbow girls, Masons and Eastern Stars the last day of the session. Rainbow Convention. 600 Rainbow girls are seated at tables and some stand along the side and back of the room for the banquet held at the New Yorker shere the initiation of the order was put on with Miss Margaret Arnold, Grand Worthy Advisor presided. Rainbow Convention. The 21st State Assembly was held in Tacoma in June of 1947. Eleven people stand on the stage. An older couple are in the middle, the woman holding long-stemmed flowers. Miss Margaret Arnold of Renton was Grand Worthy Advisor of the Grand Assembly of the Order of Rainbow for Girls in Washington, Idaho and Alaska. She presided over this assembly. Rainbow Convention. Pierce County Rainbow Girls hosted the 21st annual session of the Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls June 22, 23 and 24, 1947. 1,500 girls from Washington, Idaho and Alaska met for the 25th anniversary of Rainbow in Washington State. Rainbow Convention. The Pierce County Rainbow Girls were hostesses to the 21st annual session of the Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for girls which was held June 22, 23, and 24, 1947. Over 1,500 young ladies from Washington, Idaho, and Alaska attended. Several drill teams performed. The winning teams were announced on the afternoon of the last day. The Tacoma Junior Women's Club was organizing the seventh annual "Eyes for the Blind" carnival and bazaar. Activities, including a "Fish Pond", food booths and social events would all be part of the fun-filled weekend. Left to right view of Ruth C. Groves, Valorie C. Soares and Jeanne L. Junior Sheriff's patrol, Pierce County, Deputy Sheriff badge. Deputy Sheriff Gordon Hill organized Pierce County schools so that each school would have a Junior Sheriff's chief of patrol. Badges were given to each chief. (T.Times, 5/12/1947, p.3)

The Order of AHEPA held their meetings at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. They participated in the annual bazaar held for the "Athenian Holiday", where you could find authentic Greek foods, pastries and handicrafts, all prepared by the Daughters of Penelope of the Order of AHEPA, the women's auxiliary group. Ivanhoe Commandery of the Knights Templar. Members of the Knights Templar are dressed in decorated robes, uniforms, hats and crowns in front of a stage hung with a large cross at the Masonic Temple. York Rites delegates to the annual state convention arrived Saturday, May 10, 1947, for meetings of the three grand bodies. The meetings of the twenty-eight commanderies of the Knights Templar was highlighted by a parade from the Masonic Temple to the First Christian Church on May 11th, 1947. This was the 60th conclave of grand commandery of Knights Templar of Washington (T.Times, 5/9/1947, p.1)

Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. Mrs. A.O. (Mathilda H.) Burmeister was the social chairman of the silver tea held May 27, 1947, at the home of Paul B. and Genevieve M. Smith, by the newly formed Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. 400 guests were invited to the event. Mrs. Smith, in a floor length, floral print dress and white jacket stands outside in a garden setting. Red Cross had just started their annual fund raising campaign in Pierce County. Red Cross volunteers and community members were getting ready to begin asking for donations from individuals, families and businesses. Members looked forward to the yearly event because many of them would be taking home a turkey to grace their Thanksgiving day table. Epsilon Sigma Alpha Jewel Pin Ceremony. Four new pledges were presented with their pins and wristlets made up of golden chrysanthemums and tied with blue ribbons (the sorority's colors are blue and gold). The new members, Frances Karr, Arlene Hefferon, Mrs. John Crawford and Elsa L. Roberts, are seen seated. The many small stuffed animals they are holding and are on the floor are part of the social Christmas work being done by the sorority to be given to underpriviledged children. Elks Club, publicity for Stocking Fillers. A new organization in the Tacoma Lodge of Elks is the F.K.S. Construction Company to rehabilitate the Elk's facilities and construction at the Temple. F.K.S. comes from the names of their three officers, L-R above, Max Frolic, Rinaldo Keasal and Walter Sutter.
