A ship is docked at the company dock on the Hylebos Waterway, ready to transport and transfer Hooker products. A railroad spur running through the facility also made transportation of Hooker chemicals an easier task.

A young man reaches for the hand of his smiling young lady as they spend the day in the daffodil fields of the Puyallup Valley in this 1960 photograph taken from the stock files of the Richards Studios. He is already clutching an armful of flowers. Mount Rainier is prominent in the background.

A barn, probably belonging to the field's owners, and Mount Rainier are in the background. This was probably taken in the early spring at the height of the daffodil season.

ca. 1960. 1960 Richards stock footage- the County-City Building from the intersection of 11th and Tacoma Avenue South. In the background to the left can be seen the Armory. This view shows the two story court wing next to the twelve story central structure. The very controversial joint building took over 7 years from voter approval to finished structure, with skirmishes over location, architect, cost (it finished 3 1/2 million over original budget) and division between city and county. The building, however, has served Tacoma and Pierce County well and still meets the needs of the community. The wings have been extensively remodeled and added on to and now stretch almost to Tacoma Ave. So.

ca. 1960. The Stadium High School Class of 1950 held their 10-year reunion at the Sportsmen's Chateau on June 25, 1960. Helping to plan the festivities were: (l to r) Garold G. Gray, senior class president; Margie Flanders (Mrs. Nick) Mosich and Dr. William Sherrod, co-chairmen; and Marilyn Fansler (Mrs. Ed) Hurlow. Garold Gray and Marilyn Hurlow are holding a Stadium 1950 pennant. The reunion featured dancing, and breakfast was served after midnight. (TNT 6-5-60, D-5)

ca. 1960. Portrait of Pacific Lutheran University president Seth C. Eastvold. University president Eastvold poses in 1960 before a painting of Jesus. Dr. Eastvold saw the expansion of the private school both in capital projects and in enrollment during his 1943-1962 administration. In 1960 Pacific Lutheran was reorganized into six schools and colleges and became Pacific Lutheran University. (1961 Saga yearbook, p. 12)

The baseball team was awarded the Quaker Oats trophy for a 50-game winning season. Each member, including the batboy, holds a miniature version of the trophy. The Studs, Seattle division, defeated Detroit 3-1 in Battle Creek, Michigan, on Tacoman Earl Hyder's home run , to capture the national American Amateur Baseball Congress title on September 21, 1960. Mount Rainier looms in the background, overlooking the industrial area of Tacoma, City (now Thea Foss) Waterway with its boats and log dumps, and the 11th St. Bridge. Familiar buildings such as the Puget Sound National Bank, Rust, and Washington buildings can be spotted on Pacific Avenue. The County-City Building with its two wings and the State Armory are in mid-photo. The wooded area is Wright Park with its meandering paths clearly marked. ca. 1960. The American flag flies proudly over the ship "Argyll" as she docks in Tacoma in 1960. The cargo ship is preparing to load or unload a shipment on behalf of the Hooker Electrochemical Co. Hooker had a dock on the Hylebos Waterway facilitating transfer of Hooker chemical products.

ca. 1960. Aerial photographs of the growing University Place community ca. 1960 Richards Studio stock footage. Heavily wooded areas indicated that there was still plenty of room for development in U.P. in the early 1960's. Horizontal street in center is Bridgeport Way; vertical highway is S. 27th St. The 75-acre Tacoma Airport is in the upper left corner; it would be sold to the Lundstrom Development Co. in 1970.

ca. 1960. The County-City Building, dedicated in April of 1959, over 7 years after the voters' approval, and designed by A. Gordon Lumm. The building stretches over 2 city blocks and was built at a cost of 9 1/2 million dollars; 3 1/2 million over the original amount approved by the voters. Shown is the four story law enforcement wing that was completed and occupied last. It housed both the Pierce County Sheriffs and the Tacoma Police Department. It is connected to the twelve story central structure. The photograph is taken from the intersection of 9th and Tacoma Ave. South with the structure facing onto Tacoma Ave. So. ca. 1960. Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co.'s 40-acre plant faced the Hylebos Waterway and portions of undeveloped Northeast Tacoma, including an enormous gravel pit. Aerial photographs taken by the Richards Studio in 1960 show the large facility along with numerous storage tanks. A ship is docked ready to be loaded with the company's chemical products.

ca. 1960. Zebra Fireworks stand at night. The Zebra Fireworks stand in 1960 is ablaze in the darkness as eager customers approach to look over the wide variety of products for sale. Wise shoppers could pick up a "Racket Box" assortment on sale for $5.95. There are numerous signs banning smoking near the fireworks.

ca. 1960. Exterior of St. Patrick's Church. Designed by architect Frederick Heath, the French Gothic-styled church celebrated its first services on Christmas, 1906. The church was dedicated on June 30, 1907. View of the massive stone building shows a crowd of people milling around the open doors; this spring, 1960, photograph was probably taken at one of the many weddings which occurred on its premises.

A 12' log rests on the floor of Puget Sound Plywood Corporation's plant in December, 1960, as a much smaller log, with the help of chains and a winch, is being deposited behind it. An employee of the cooperative plywood company carefully maneuvers the log into position. Markings on the gigantic log indicate that the volume of the log is 2000 board feet. ca. 1960. Harold M. Tollefson served as Tacoma mayor three terms. He was first elected mayor by his fellow City Councilmen in 1954. He was elected in a general election in 1962 and subsequently re-elected in 1964. Mr. Tollefson was a freeholder in 1952 and helped to draw up the charter that was responsible for changing Tacoma's government from a mayor-commission to the council-manager system. Harold Tollefson came from a large family of seven children, all raised by his widowed mother Bertha, who was later honored as Washington State's Mother of the Year in 1959. Mr. Tollefson, an attorney, had several brothers who also obtained prominence: Thor, a multi-term Congressman, Erling, a judge, and Rudy, a banker. Tollefson Plaza in downtown Tacoma has been named for the former mayor who had received wide praise for championing urban renewal and whose efforts initiated downtown's revival. ALBUM 16. Four girls in ballet costumes strike graceful poses in this December 10, 1960, studio portrait. They are believed to be students of Nancy Jane Bare, a longtime dance instructor at Annie Wright Seminary. It is possible that they were part of the six Annie Wright upper school dance pupils scheduled to present a dance suite, "Ribbons & Bells," following the seminary's Christmas dinner on December 15, 1960.
