Although too young to return to public school, Kristine was featured in the News Tribune school layout. Kristine is the daughter of the Gene Grants of Steilacoom Lake. It featured a wide pitched roof, covered porch with partial brick columns, and low, broad, horizontal lines.

The many hours of work behind the scenes of any play production are just as important to a play's success as the acting before an audience. Lakewood Players ( l to r) Mrs. Perry Crothers, Mrs. John Anderson and Mrs. Russ Sutherland, at the ironing board, helped prepare the costumes for the first play of the 1950 -51 season, "Over 21" , which began a five night stay at the Lakewood Center Recreation Hall in October. The Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company of Washington held an open house on August 8, 1950, to officially celebrate its parent firm's 100th anniversary. The Pennsalt tideflats location at 2901 Taylor Way welcomed a large crowd of visitors and employees. Despite its name, Pennsalt did not make common table salt but did manufacture more than 300 chemical products. (TNT 8-6-50, A-9)

Ten women pose in front of a Pennsalt display during the company's 100th anniversary celebration. Pennsalt's Tacoma location on Taylor Way opened its doors on August 8, 1950, so that visitors could tour the plant, examine displays, and become aware of the 300 and more products manufactured by Pennsalt. The Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company of Washington has itself been a vital presence in the tideflats since 1929 and is one of Pennsalt's eight manufacturing plants in the nation. Visitors to the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company of Washington's open house celebration on August 8, 1950, enjoy one of the many interesting tours given that day. Pennsalt opened the doors to their Tacoma plant in the tideflats to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of its parent firm. Here the man in white shirt and tie gestures toward what appears to be large holding tanks. Pennsalt manufactures many kinds of chemical products, including caustic soda and liquid chlorine, from coarse gray salt. (TNT 8-6-50, A-9)

A new Coe lathe was installed at the Puget Sound Plywood Company plant on Tacoma's tideflats in 1950. Four unidentified employees at the plant monitored the giant lathe which was used to peel a continuous sheet of thin veneer off a prepared log. The veneer sheets were then glued together to make plywood. When the Puget Sound Plywood plant at 230 East F Street was built in 1942, Tacoma was a major plywood manufacturing center with over half a dozen plywood factories. Puget Sound Plywood was the first cooperative plywood plant in Tacoma.

The "Carmelita the Second" underwent sea trials at the Old Town Dock on August 23, 1950. The 55-foot fishing boat is stationary; no visible sign of captain aboard. The dinghy has been hauled up and stored in the boat's stern. The boat was sold to Mexican interests for use in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fleet. Photograph commissioned by Birchfield Boiler, Inc.

In August of 1950 a very agile man performs acrobatic stunts during the Tacoma Athletic Commission's 4th annual water carnival held on Ruston Way. The water events were performed on Commencement Bay directly bayward of the TAC headquarters at 2217 Ruston Way in the Top of the Ocean cafe. The performers were provided by Ski-Quatic Follies from Seattle. The man on the trapeze could be Giff Owen. (TNT 8-25-50, p. 20)

Two water-skiers were just one of the acts that entertained the large crowd that gathered on Commencement Bay at the Tacoma Athletic Club's Water Carnival on August 26, 1950. Spectators watched the activities from both decks of the Top of the Ocean, 2217 Ruston Way. The Ski-Quatic Follies, Seattle, provided the entertainment which included diving, clown jumps, wake jumping and slalom skiing. (TNT 8-25-50, p. 20)

ca. 1950. Mel Pedersen holds on to a Tacoma Master Builders Association desktop sign and jointly grips a warranty deed with probably Edward Miller in 1950. Pedersen is the president of the association which prided itself on quality workmanship. Each year the Master Builders sponsored the National Home Week, generally held in September.

Six children have their eyes glued to the television screen in this September, 1950, photograph. Televisions were becoming more and more popular and articles were even being written about the correct room placement when a TV is added. Don Sund is shown adjusting a console combination model while (l-r) Sisty Bond, Linda Erickson, Bunny Bond, unidentified boy, and Mary Lou Sund wait patiently. Local stores were offering similar styles for sale from $340 and up. By 1950 rectangular shaped screens were rapidly replacing rounded screen models like the one shown here. The young women are beautifully dressed in scoop neck, claret red velveteen gowns with narrow bertha collars and elbow-length gloves, and carry long stemmed beribboned roses. The former Jacqueline Brown married College of Puget Sound student David Keller on October 7, 1950. The bride, wearing a pearl necklace, is dressed in a lovely ankle length gown of white French imported lace over net. She has a fingertip veil with satan cap and wears lace elbow length gloves. A double shower in honor of Nancy Challman and Mary Louise Graiff was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Horjes in August, 1950. Barbara Horjes and Myrna Juntti entertained many friends and relatives of the brides-to-be. Posed near a lilly pond in the Horjes' yard are the honorees, standing, and the two hostesses. This aerial view of part of the sprawling St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Company complex with Mount Rainier in the background dates from September of 1950. St. Paul & Tacoma with its many buildings, smokestacks and burners was located in the southwest section of the Tacoma tideflats near the Puyallup River; their headquarters were at 1220 Saint Paul Avenue. The white bridge near the center of the image crossing the channelized Puyallup River is the Lincoln Avenue bridge. Two railroad bridges and the Pacific Highway (U.S. Hwy 99) bridge can be seen further up the river.

Art Swenning, owner of Art's Glass and Upholstery Shop, commissioned this studio photograph taken in September, 1950, of seat covers. It is uncertain whether the seat is to be used in a vehicle or in a home. Art's Glass and Upholstery Shop was located at 814-816 Tacoma Avenue South.

Crawford's Sea Grill, located at 505 Broadway, opened its new Star Room Terrace in August of 1950. Owned by Jack Meaker, Crawford's was built on the site of the Nelson Bennett Mansion in 1946. It was a very popular restaurant with Tacoma residents and visitors alike who enjoyed the unique Terrace which was completely enclosed in glass to take advantage of the view of Commencement Bay. The Town & Country Shop and the Wild West Veterans Club (Post #91) shared space at the same location. Crawford's closed in the early 1950s. (TNT, 8/30/1950) TPL-9848

Exterior of Dandy Cafe. Located at 917 Tacoma Avenue South, the Dandy Cafe shared a building with the Dandy Barber Shop in 1950. Owned and operated by Fred and Louise Fries, the Dandy Cafe was a small eating establishment. As the signs on the building advertised, they offered Coca-Cola and Flett's Ice Cream as part of the menu.

Extended shot of Nalley's facilities taken across the tracks on August 25, 1950. Several buildings on Nalley's show the growth of the company which began in 1918. By 1950, Nalley's had become a $10,000,000 business with such diverse products as potato chips, mayonaise, "Tang" and "Lumber Jack Syrup".

Taken on a rare rainy day in August, 1950, a Dodge delivery truck with Nalley signs painted on can be seen outside the Nalley's Sales Department building on South Lawrence. Painted white, the building has two floors and is made of cement block. Signs on the building state that Nalley's is a wholesale distributor of food specialties.

In this photograph taken from across the street on August 26, 1950, are the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, church rectory, and what appears to be a small shrine in between. Emerging from the Tacoma White Trucks dealership is a Griffin Fuel Company truck in a photograph taken on August 28, 1950. The White Company of Cleveland, Ohio began building heavy duty trucks and buses in 1900. The Tacoma White Trucks dealership was located at 2719 South Tacoma Way. Frank Buchanan was the president and manager from 1949 until 1954 according to the Tacoma city directory.

ca. 1950. This photograph of the offices of W. H. Opie Realtors was taken around 1950. The office was located at the intersection of 10th and Pacific Ave., 1001-05 Pacific. The clock in the window upstairs gives the "Knapp College Time" of 2:40. The modernistic structure was built in 1941 and was named the "Anderson Building" after builder Mrs. R.E. Anderson. It is constructed of concrete and crystal glass. Knapp College had occupied the 2nd floor since 1941.
