Members of the Tacoma High School faculty and the senior class, class of 1900, posed on the porch and steps of the school then located at 714 Tacoma Avenue South. The site was the former location of the Washington College, private school for boys. Two students have been identified in the photograph: George (or Georgia) Armstrong and Roy Knapp. Roy Knapp is seated in the second row of steps, second from left, next to an unidentified female. He was the business manager in 1899-1900 for the "Tahoma," the monthly publication of the Tacoma High School students and would pass away in 1906. Two cadets sit on the step railings. They are holding their distinctive hats and appear to be wearing similar clothing, i.e. uniforms. Cadets would participate in drills and would have an armory prepared for their use. Lincoln High School shop teacher Ned Ubben, right, watched in December of 1937 as Irene Kuhne and Otto Robinson mended two of the items given to needy families in Tacoma by the school's students. Maintaining a tradition started in 1922 by The Lincoln News, the school's student publication, Lincoln students filled 66 Christmas baskets with food and toys. The baskets were then distributed to families selected from a list provided by the state welfare bureau. (T. Times 12-21-1937, p. 12)

In December of 1937, Peggy Bently and Lucille Rudd (order not known) were "Santa's Twins" at Lincoln High School. The two young men are Harold Oswald (left) and Gordon Ambrose. Peggy and Lucille were the organizing force behind the Lincoln News' efforts to provide a Merry Christmas to 66 needy families in Tacoma. In a tradition begun in 1922, food, toys and clothing were collected by Lincoln High School students and distributed in gift baskets to families in need selected by Tacoma's social service agencies. Used toys that were donated were repaired in the Lincoln High School metal and wood shops, and clothes was repaired or sewn in the school's home economics classes. (T. Times 12-21-1937, p. 12)

William Hardie, the Lincoln High School track coach, posed with five of his track men in September of 1937. By the end of the year, the Lincoln Abes track team had won the state track title for the third consecutive year. With six returning letterman for the 1937-38 team, coach Hardie was hoping to make it four in a row. In the back row are, left to right, Hardie, Rankin, Wilcox and Sharp. Kneeling in front are Harold H. Berndt (left) and Lincoln's best "sprint man" Tommy Jones (right). At the state competition in Pullman, "Hurrying" Harold Berndt finished first in the 100 and 200 yard dashes and was high point man for the tournament. (T. ca. 1937. Stadium High School Girls' Marching Unit, the Tigerannas, ca. 1937. The Tigerannas were formed in 1937 to march with the Stadium Band, providing a little extra color to performances. They were the brainchild of R.C. Fussell, Stadium Instrumental director. The 45 girls were photographed standing in wing formation. Stadium High School and Bellarmine High School were getting ready to battle it out for the 1947 City League Title. Both football teams had done exceptionally well during this first part of the season, a tough game was anticipated. The game would be played at Stadium Bowl in Tacoma, view of high school football players getting ready for their big game.

Dissension was in the air on April 17, 1946, when approximately 50 students from Robert Gray Jr. High took to the streets to protest what they termed the "firing" of physical education teacher Victor Kovack by Principal Carroll A. Payne. The protest continued for 3 days, gathering up to 150 students demanding the removal of Principal Payne. When police forced the picketers from in front of the building, they paraded through the streets of South Tacoma. Kovack and Principal Payne had disagreed over the use of corporal punishment at the school, with Kovack opposing it. Students were advised that Mr. Kovack had been transferred, not fired, by the school district. After an investigation by the school board into the alleged physical punishments, Principal Payne was exonerated, but the regulations concerning corporal punishment in the schools were more clearly defined and published. Several groups at Stewart Junior High School, Mrs. Andres, Times. Stewart Junior High School held its eight annual May festival May 7, 1948. Queen Arlee Curtice is seated on a stool raised higher than the others who are seated on stools. The other young women are her posture duchesses. They are dressed in summer play clothes including pedal pushers, shorts, and blouses, some with midriffs exposed. Helen Andres was one of the directors of the May festival for 1948. The Marchetta Ki girls marching unit at Lincoln High School was scheduled to perform at two football games during the first weekend of November in 1948. On Friday evening, November 5 they appeared at the Bellingham - Lincoln H. S. game in the Lincoln Bowl. The next day they were part of the halftime show at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S) Homecoming game against Central Washington.
