Finishing touches were being put on the newly built Washington College building at 714 Tacoma Ave. So. Thanks to the generosity of Charles B. Wright, money had been donated to start the private school for boys, the male equivalent of Annie Wright Seminary. It opened on September 2, 1886, with an enrollment of 65 boys, half of them day students. The Depression of 1892-93 forced many students to leave and the school closed in 1892. This building later served as the Tacoma High School from 1898 to 1906 when the high school moved to the remodeled Tourist Hotel at N. 1st & E Streets. It was later demolished in the summer of 1912 to make way for the new Central School Building and the site address changed to 601 So. 8th St.

Pacific Lutheran College President O.A. Tingelstad poses with the Swedish granite cornerstone for the new library building at the October 23, 1937 cornerstone laying ceremony. The cornerstone reads in Latin : "Verbum Dei Manet in Aeternum MCMXXXVII." The Latin phrase translates as "The word of God remains in Eternity 1937." The building was designed by Emanuel J. Bresemann and Heath, Gove & Bell, Architects. The library has been remodeled and is now known as Xavier Hall. (T. Times 10/25/1937, pg. 3)

Young men from the College of Puget Sound razz a fellow classmate during the first annual C.P.S. picnic held on April 28, 1938. Classes were dismissed early and students poured out on to the grounds to enjoy the annual freshman vs. sophomore tug-of-war, as well as two hours of games. Following a luncheon served by SPURS, the women's service organization, there was a mass community sing and two hours of dancing. (T. Times 4/29/1938, p. 1).

A ground breaking ceremony for new women's dormitory at the College of Puget Sound was held on February 16, 1938. A large crowd of students and reporters gather in the open field in anticipation of the event. One year later in February of 1939, Anderson Hall was dedicated. (T.Times, 2/16/1938, p. 1)

ca. 1952. The cornerstone was laid in February, 1924, for Jones Hall on the College of Puget Sound campus. The building was designed by architects Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, who later designed several other campus structures. View of ivy-covered Jones Hall showing exterior and main entrance, the first building constructed on the college's North 15th and Warner site. The campus was opened in September, 1924. The school was known as the College of Puget Sound until 1960 when it was renamed the University of Puget Sound. TPL-8185

Dr. Edward H. Todd, president of the College of Puget Sound, sits at his roll top desk studying papers. Dr. Todd was the President of CPS for 29 years, from 1913- 1942. The men's dormitory was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948.

ca. 1927. College of Puget Sound Football, first team, circa 1927. Twenty-six players and two coaches sitting on bleachers. In 1927, the College of Puget Sound had only one athletic director and he coached all the sports teams. Clyde Wesley Hubbard was new, having arrived at the college in 1926, but he pushed his team to finish second in the conference. He was assisted by former Logger star Lynn Wright and A.A. Denman. An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. Franklin Thompson into the student body. They would pass the color post again upon graduation. (T.Times, 10/10/1946, p.5)

Dr. Seth Eastvold (right), president of Pacific Lutheran College, along with his wife Enga and Board of Trustees chairman Dr. H.L. Foss of Seattle are gathered together to dedicate the new science hall in October of 1947. The building dedication ceremony will include many guest speakers and a performance by PLC's famous "Choir of the West." PLC had also recently dedicated their new student union building. The new Pacific Lutheran College Memorial Gymnasium was dedicated at the first basketball home game of the season. The new gym has a sound proof radio booth, electric scoreboard, portable bleachers, classrooms, laundry facilities and a trophy ornament area. R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

College of Puget Sound graduation. The College of Puget Sound held their 59th commencement exercises at Jones Hall, May 26, 1947. Two honorary degrees were given this year. The Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon William Bowman who was recently named superintendent of the Vancouver area of the Methodist Church. The Doctor of Human Letters was conferred upon Charles A.
