ca. 1937. The Stationers, interior. In their repair office, three men busily work away. They are repairing, left to right, an adding machine, typewriter and the drum of a mimeograph (or "ditto") machine. The shelves surrounding them house other office machinery in various stages of repair.

ca. 1937. Mrs. N.C. Pilet (the former Betty Osmers) and her son Stanford pose seated on the steps in her parents' home in this circa 1937 photograph. Mrs. Pilet and her son are in Tacoma to spend six weeks with her parents Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Osmers, president of Tacoma Drug Company, at their home at 422 No. "I" St. Captain and Mrs. Pilet reside at the Presidio of San Francisco, but are being transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. (T. Mayor George Smitley, polio victim Shirley Ford and bakery owner Gus C. Westerdale at Model Bakery. Publicity for President Roosevelt's Birthday Ball to benefit Infantile Paralysis (Polio) research. Birthday cake was topped with a bust of FDR. Young Miss Ford, 709 No. "L" St., would have the honor of cutting and distributing the cake to the hordes expected to attend the fourth annual President's Ball. Balls and parties would beheld across the nation on January 30th in honor of President Roosevelt with the majority of proceeds remaining in the local communities for the benefit of polio victims. ca. 1937. The caterers on the staff of "Dusty" Hoskin's Mecca Cafe go over the reservations for the Democratic Victory dinner, scheduled for March 4, 1937 at the Odd Fellows Hall. Pictured are, left to right, Charles Carlsen, Ole Wedeberg and Jack Fritz. The trio will be preparing the meal for the political dinner, where President F.D. Roosevelt will address the assemblage by radio hookup. The Mecca Cafe was located at 1152 Commerce. Steps led down to the entrance, since the restaurant was located below the street level. ca. 1937. Three black bears at Point Defiance Park. Zoo keeper George R. Jones reaches into steel bar cage while four young people watch. Cage is outdoors in open area with fenced area on back slope. In April of 1937, the zoo had no grizzly bears after the death of "Juliet," long time zoo resident. Her partner "Romeo" died the winter before. The zoo was expected a delivery of a pair of grizzly cubs in May from Yellowstone.

ca. 1937. Three black bears at the Point Defiance Zoo appear just as curious about their four teenage visitors as the visitors are about the bears in this circa 1937 photograph. Zoo keeper George R. Jones seems to be reaching into the outdoor barred steel cage with a small item, perhaps food, in his hand.

ca. 1937. Party at Alt Heidelberg plant. A group of men have just finished dinner and are enjoying a glass of beer. Poster on wall: "HERE in the completely equipped chemical laboratory is controlled the famous formula of Otto Birkmaier..." Otto Birkmaier was the brewmaster for many years at Columbia Breweries and was one of the most highly regarded brewers in the country. (T.Times)

ca. 1937. Mrs. Evelyn Moser, woman butcher, cutting a slab of meat with a saw. Mrs. Moser was trained by her father Frank W. Hamilton at a young age to cut meat. While other girls played with dolls, she learned how to handle knives. She is possibly the only female meat cutter in the US. Despite her dainty size, she can hold her own in the world of big, burly butchers. (T. Times 1/28/1937, pg. 18)

ca. 1937. Portrait of Waller Road School football team, thirteen boys with coach. Sweat shirts have boy's first name stenciled on front. The Waller Road grade school's football team finished the 1937 season undefeated, emerging the champions of the Pierce County League, Division A. They were coached by George L. Cronquist. Front row, left to right, Fred Wepfer, Norman Sturm, Bob Infer, Chester Orwich, Francis Metcalf, Gene Falk and Coach Cronquist. ca. 1937. Sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma broker tried for mail fraud, 1937. Mr. Morrison would be sentenced to a five-year term for using the mails to defraud. He would be released on parole from McNeil Island federal penitentiary after serving three years. He then would be tried in Superior Court on 11 counts of fraud in 1941. (T.Times 10-14-41, p. 1)

ca. 1937. 1937 sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma investment broker tried for mail fraud. Courtroom filled with people. A courtroom awaits the sentencing of Mr. Morrison on federal charges of mail fraud. He would be sentenced to a five-year term at McNeil Island federal penitentiary and serve three years before being released on parole. He would be charged in 1941 with eleven counts of fraud stemming from a 1937 situation where Frank Berry, Old Town fisherman, lost $30,000 through investments made through the Morrison Investment Co. ca. 1937. National Guard Dinner at the Union Club circa 1937. Eight National Guard men handcuffed in pairs on the interior stairs. The officer on the left, second man up, has been identified as William M. Adams. He retired after 44 years of service as a full colonel. (Identification provided by a reader)

ca. 1937. Copy of an autographed photograph. In the photo, Democratic United States Senators Homer T. Bone and Clarence C. Dill read through materials at a desk. Mr. Bone served in the US Senate from 1933-1944. Mr. Dill, representing Spokane County, served as Senator from 1923-1935. He is known as the "Father of the Grand Coulee Dam."
