ca. 1937. This casual portrait of Ray Gamble, Tacoma businessman, was taken circa 1937. He is seated in a wooden chair and wears an open neck shirt with bright suspenders. Mr. Gamble became a self-made millionaire, amateur magician, and collector of carved elephants. He hobnobbed with Hollywood luminaries, traveled extensively and lived a very full life. His view home at 3411 North 30th was dubbed the "Elephant House" for its vast collection of carved and sculptured elephants.

Miss Norma McDermott of Odessa, WA poses with the Black Minorca cock owned by O. R. Winters of Dundee, OR. at the annual Tacoma Poultry Show which opened December 28, 1937. Mr. Winter's big black, Grand Champion the previous two years, was named the champion cock of the show. The poultry show ran from Tuesday through Saturday. On Saturday evening the traditional poultrymen's banquet, a home-cooked chicken dinner, was held at the Odd Fellows Hall at 6th and Fawcett. (T.Times, 12/31/1937, p. 14).

ca. 1937. Portrait of Mrs. James W. Bryan Jr. standing in front of a cabinet in which there are several pieces of pottery, glassware, and silverware. She is wearing a dark, sheer dress with a large scalloped collar. Her hair is marcelled. Mrs. Bryan's picture ran on the society page of the Bremerton Sun on May 8, 1937, when she was co-hostessing one of the annual Mother's Day luncheons planned by the chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization.) She belonged to the CG chapter. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. ca. 1937. The puppies of Ed Griffin's champion English Mastiff "Broomcourt Nell." In the beginning of September of 1936, there was only one mastiff in the Northwest. By Sept. 9, 1936, there were 11 with the addition of 10 puppies. The father was Roxbury Boy. Seven of the pups were female and 3 were male.

ca. 1937. This customer's print of a Richfield service station was probably copied in 1951. This possibly could be Burns Service Station at 716 East 64th St, with owner W.F. Burns residing next door. View of man in white uniform standing in front of gas station with three pumps. Three tires lean against the small office next to sign indicating batteries could be charged for 50 cents. Two cars are visible; one is elevated on an outdoor ramp while the other is parked under cover. License plates on the vehicles indicate they were licensed in Washington in 1937. TPL-7180

ca. 1937. One of the chemists at Columbia Breweries is examining a sample under a microscope. Other glass slides with labled samples are seen lying on a towel next to the paper the chemist is using to take notes. Beakers with larger samples are seen on the counter with cotton stuffing in their necks. Copies of old prints ordered by Heidelberg Brewing Company in December 1954. The photographer's name in the lower right shows, "Associated Photographic Service, Commercial Photographers, 714 Market Street, Tacoma".

ca. 1937. A man sits at his desk at Columbia Brewing Company wearing a tweed three-piece suit, smoking a cigarette. A Portland Telephone Directory (it appears to be fron 1937) hangs from a nail in the woodwork around the windows behind him and a map of Oregon is pinned to the wall at the side of his desk along with important phone numbers and business cards. His telephone and a floor lamp, whose stem is made of a stack of bottle caps, are at his left side. Albert H. Greenberg was manager of the Portland branch in 1935 and 1936. Richard N. Lanser was manager in 1938. Copies of old prints ordered by Heidelberg Brewing Company in December 1954.

ca. 1937. In 1937, Charles H. Manley (left) and Benjamin J. Weeks posed in front of Manley's Cigar Store at the corner of 9th & Pacific with Mr. Manley's famous wooden cigar store "Indian," "Chief Skookum." Mr. Manley operated his cigar store downtown for over 50 years. His friend, Benjamin Weeks, was a native of Exeter, New Hampshire. He had come to Tacoma in 1901 to become the manager of the Tacoma street car line, a position he held before becoming involved in the insurance business. Mr. Weeks was said to be the oldest stamp collector in the country and had sold many collections in his time. He had collected stamps for over 70 years. Mr. Weeks passed away in November of 1942 at age 86 while Mr. Manley died in 1947 at age 90. (TNT 11-12-42, p. 23-Mr. Weeks' obituary)

Main floor at Rhodes Brothers Store, Christmas season 1937. Christmas display of bags, gifts and jewelry. This photograph was taken by noted photographer J.R. Eyerman from the front of the store, looking toward the rear, and before the escalator was installed. Neon signs around the room, above the fine wood cabinets, denote the goods available- cosmetics, jewelry, toilet sets, hankies, novelties, finer bags and gift bags, to name a few. High arching decorations reach over the clear aisles. A large sign on the back wall gives "Gift Ideas" available by floor. (photograph donated by the Rhodes Reunion Committee)

ca. 1937. A woman known as "the mother of Hoodlum Lake" sits in a rocking chair on the front porch of her house in this circa 1937 photograph. The woman's large black dog rests his paws on her lap. The woman has been identified by her great granddaughter as Eva Lena Tuel Potter. Eva Potter was the great, great granddaughter of Levi Scott, one of the original Oregon pioneers who traveled on the Applegate Trail. (T. Times).

Maxine Mayhew holds a Bantam rooster at the 34th Annual Tacoma Poultry Show held in the old Mohr Building, 1141 Broadway, on December 28-31, 1937. Maxine smiles at the small rooster, who appears to be having a "bad hair day." After the show, the traditional poultrymen's banquet, a home-cooked chicken dinner, was held on Saturday, January 1st in the Odd Fellows Hall, 6th and Fawcett.(T. ca. 1937. U. S. Coast Guard ship 402 moored beside a wharf below the 11th Street Bridge. By June of 1937, the CG 402 had been permanently assigned to Tacoma. In peace time, they operated under the direct orders of the Treasury Department; but in wartime they answered to the secretary of the Navy. The 402 had been built on the Atlantic coast and during Prohibition, the speedy vessel had served as a rum chaser. The 402 was surplussed by the Navy in 1946 to the Boy Scouts. She is still in use, as of August 2001, as the Sea Scout Ship Charles N. Curtis #110. She is moored on the Thea Foss Waterway. (T. Times 6-3-1937, pg. 8-article).
