The bright lights of Lincoln Bowl look down on the thousands of Shriners present for their annual Pacific Northwest Shrine Association convention in 1957. "Shrine-O-Rama" was open to the general public who watched the marching units and listened to the various Shrine bands. ALBUM 15.

On February 26, 1937, nearly 300 guests crowded into the American Legion Hall, home of the West Bremerton Post No. 149, for their monthly social. The program included recognition for local teachers and junior high graduates. Selected for recognition on a basis of scholarship, honor, leadership, service and courage were four mid-year graduates from junior high. Pictured receiving their certificates of recognition are, left to right, Patricia Castle, Post Commander Pat Mulvany, Harold Worland, Joan Tatham and Wayne Kirkland. This group of Boy Scouts was planning to attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree, scheduled for August 21-31,1935, in Washington, D.C. The names of the boys are, left to right, Charles Anderson, Warren Nordquist, Bob Brotherton, Charles McAfee, Al Pousard, Bob Stetson, Bill Mill, Bob Peterson and William Dane. The jamboree was planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of scouting. Before boarding the train however, the boys received word that the jamboree had been cancelled due to a threatened epidemic of infantile paralysis (polio) in the nation's capital. Instead the boys travelled to Vancouver, Lake Louise, Winnipeg, Chicago, Niagra Falls, Albany, West Point, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC and the naval academy at Annapolis. Walter E. Holman, vice president of the National Junior Chamber of Commerce, was nabbed by Tacoma police and officials as he stepped from a northbound plane on March 12, 1936 bearing the national charter for the Tacoma Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was met by a squadron of three motorcycle policemen who "arrested " him for exceeding the air speed limit and turned him over to the custody of the local club celebrating at the Winthrop Hotel. National Guard members were called out to keep the peace in Tacoma at the beginning of a bloody clash with 500 lumber mill strikers and sympathizers that started around 4p.m. on July 12, 1935 at the intersection of 11th & A, the entrance to the 11th Street Bridge. Guardsmen were stationed at 11th & A to protect strikebreakers as they crossed the 11th Street Bridge on their way home from work at the mills on the Tideflats. They also prevented the labor demonstrators from crossing the bridge to the Tideflats. The confrontation concluded 4 1/2 hours later when the guard had pushed the angry crowd up the hill on 11th to Yakima where it dispersed. The lumber and sawmill workers strike began on May 6, 1935 and was settled early in August of the same year with victory for the workers. The National Guard was deployed to Tacoma on June 23, 1935 to preserve the peace and was involved in many skirmishes. (TDL 7/13/1935, pg. 1)

Members of the 161st Infantry of the Washington National Guard stand head to head with striking timber and sawmill workers waving the American flag and demonstrating opposition to the presence of the Guard. The Guard had been called out three weeks prior to protect strikebreakers as they crossed the bridges to the Tideflats to work. This confrontation erupted into a full scale battle with Guards using tear gas, nausea bombs, night sticks and bayonets to control the crowd. TPL-425 (TDL 7/13/1935, pg 1)

Members of the Washington National Guard used tear gas freely in an attempt to disperse the crowd of lumber mill strikers and their supporters during this July 12, 1935 melee near the intersection of 11th and A Streets. The Guard had arrived in Tacoma to protect strikebreakers attempting to open the mills on the Tideflats. The strike was particularly violent with those workers that opposed the strike suffering bombed cars and homes. TPL-426 (TDL 7/13/1935, pg 1)

ca. 1925. A group of law officers, dressed in uniforms with badges and topped off with straw skimmers, pose in front of the B.P.O.E. (Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks) lodge. Eleventh Annual Conclave of the Order of DeMolay, held in August of 1935 in Tacoma. One of the highlights was the downtown parade held on the 31st. The route was down St. Helens Ave. to Pacific, to 13th and up Broadway. A parade of young men were photographed marching along Broadway, 1100 block, toward the Elk's Temple, Tacoma. Buildings and signage visible.

United Good Neighbors. 30 executives on loan from various Tacoma businesses posed for a group portrait at the old Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, on November 3, 1971. Industry and government had loaned a total of 73 executives to the United Good Neighbors campaign who had been working since mid-August. The drive to collect funds for the UGN officially began on September 14th. The group's goal was to collect $1,928,000 in the campaign which was to end on November 12th, a bare two months away. American Legion Last Man Club. Twelve men were in attendance on November 10, 1970, at a meeting of the American Legion Edward B. Rhodes Post No. 2 Last Man Club. The annual gathering was held at Brad's Restaurant, 9201 Pacific Ave. A plaque, adorned with two American flags, is on display with the names of past commanders. James P. Posed on the rooftop of the Winthrop Hotel with the towering Medical Arts Building prominently in the background are officers of the Department of Washington and Alaska, of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-65. They were holding their 57th annual convention at the Winthrop from June 7-10, 1970. Believed to be in attendance was Mrs. Fayette Bell of Los Angeles, the organization's national president. Also believed to be pictured above was Mrs. John McDougall of Seattle, department president who presided over the convention's meetings. Among activities held during the convention was a memory banquet where a scholarship would be awarded to a college student who was a descendant of a Civil War veteran. Memorial services - Elks Temple. Memorial services to honor "absent Brothers" were held at the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174 on Wednesday evening the 2nd of December, 1970. Large arrangements of flowers and small potted trees graced the stage steps. White gates were placed before a backdrop of trees and a large white building shown in the distance. In the foreground of the picture, left to right, are Si Nelson, Percy Ball, Rod O'Hiser, Marshall Perrow, James Wilson and future mayor Gordon Johnston. Seated on the right side of the room, directly under the palm tree wall decoration are Hubert and Betty Bisson. Mr. Bisson was an architect, and later associate, for the well-known Tacoma firm of Lea, Pearson & Richards. Mr. Bisson worked for them for over 20 years until his death in 1971. He designed many of Tacoma's banks and schools for the firm.
