On December 17, 1942, the Tacoma Lions Club held its annual Christmas party at the new Tacoma Boys Club, 711 So. 25th Street. Welcoming the Lions to the Club is Vincent Russell, center, managing director of the Boys Club. Pictured left to right are Paul Newman, Harry J. Lynch, Russell, Maj. Earl Williams of the Salvation Army and A. T. Norman. Forty underprivileged boys were the guests of the Lions at the banquet and received gifts as well. Mrs. Robert D. Chamness, Mrs. Frank E. Kelly and Mrs. Wilbur J. Larson (l-r), members of the S.A. Perkins Orthopedic Guild, display handmade gilded wall decorations for purchase as possible gifts to brighten the 1963 holiday season. These, and other Christmas gifts, would be sold at the Holiday Bazaar held on November 13, 1963, at the home of Mrs. Kelly. The S.A. Perkins Orthopedic Guild was one of many Tacoma-area guilds who raised funds for charitable purposes. All proceeds from the bazaar would be earmarked for the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. Community Chest. Portrait artist and subject at 13th and Pacific U.S.O. Volunteers provided many services for the military men stationed here. In January of 1943, portrait artist Laurie MacLeod posed with her painting of Chief Petty Officer Joe Catanzinto, of Punxsutawney, Penn., and the model himself. Mr. Catazinto drew the lucky number in the Wednesday contest at the USO Club at 13th & Pacific and won the sitting and portrait. He planned to send it to his family back home. Mrs. MacLeod held the drawing while her husband Robert MacLeod, also an artist, attended his Coast Guard Reserve meeting. The couple has a studio in New York until four years prior when they moved to this area and built a home at Lakota Beach. (TNT 2/3/1943, pg. 1)

This photograph from January 1943 shows "mending night" at the Tacoma USO at 415 So. 13th St. Trousers were hemmed, patches were sewn on, and caps were mended with a motherly touch and a warm smile. Left to right, back row: Mrs. John Troutt is doing some mending for Seaman Chuck McCoy while PFC Richard Botelho looks on; next is Pvt. Andrew Motes. Front row: Seaman 1st Class Dean McCullough holds the spool of thread while Mrs. Ethyle Ferris mends his cap. Marcella (Mrs. Frank) LaFleur is seen at the sewing machine and Corp. Installation of officers at Rudder Club. Posed against the flocked wallpaper of the Rudder Club are its new officers, installed February 23, 1943. The Rudder Club is believed to be a forerunner of the Propeller Club. It was a social club formed around August of 1942 and it catered primarily to shipyard employees. The tireless women of the Pierce County Red Cross marshall up their forces and head out to raise money for the War Fund Drive, held during the month of March, 1943. The money will be used to help the Red Cross reach its goal of serving the armed forces at home and abroad, their families and the prisoners of war. During the month of March 1943, the tireless ladies of the Pierce County American Red Cross performed double duty. They filled their usual volunteer positions with the Red Cross and raised money for the War Fund Drive as well. Grace Holt Larsen (Mrs. Orrin B. Larsen), left, holds one of the posters promoting the work of the Red Cross Nurses' Aides. Also admiring the poster are, left to right, Mrs. Albert Miller and Mrs. Gus W. Viert. In March of 1943, the untiring women of the Pierce County American Red Cross were doing double duty, performing their regular duties as well as raising money for the March War Fund Drive. Their local goal was $194,000, part of the national 125 million quota. Pictured left to right are Mrs. Morley Brotman, Mrs. Charles F. Grover, Mrs. James P. Macpherson, Mrs. A.D. Members of the Club will be hosting a dance honoring the Officers of the Army Air Corps at McChord Field. The dance will be held Friday in the Junior ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop. The first Pierce County chapter of the national organization of Minute Maids stopped in their quest to sell war bonds to pose for the photographer on April 21, 1943. They were (l to r) Kay Woods - leader, Jean Connor, Barbara Engberg, Lucille Ludwick and Lucia Kisducak. They arrived suddenly and unannounced at group meetings, never staying for more than three minutes, and sold bonds. These particular maids are believed to be from the College of Puget Sound. Photographed at the Hotel Winthrop on April 21, 1943, three days later on Saturday the 24th five members of the new Pierce County Chapter of the National Organization of Minute Maids made their first public appearance at the war bond sale at Liberty Center, 800 Broadway. Minute Maids (l to r) Jean Connor, Barbara Engberg, Kay Woods - leader, Lucille Ludwick and Lucia Kisducak were encouraging Tacomans to buy war stamps and "Avenge Tokyo Raiders Bonds". Those who purchased a war bond could have a ride in an army jeep - with one of the Minute Maids - as a special bonus. They could also have a jeep named after their wife, husband, son, daughter, or favorite club, to have their own jeep fight for them on a foreign field. (T.Times 4/23/1943 p.11)

Four members of the College of Puget Sound Minute Maids, under the direction of Kay Woods, pose in a jeep during the city wide bond rally April 24, 1943 at the Liberty Center. They are at the rally to sell war stamps and convert stamp albums into "Avenge Tokyo Raiders' Bonds." For purchasing a series E bond ($18.75 and up), a citizen got a free ride in a jeep. Three members of the Spinster Club are hard at work in May of 1943 on the "Mammy" dolls that will adorn the tables at the 5th annual Dixie Ball, to be held at the Roof Garden of the Hotel Winthrop. The women are, left to right, Mrs. James Hayes, Katherine Foss and Penny (Mrs.H.J.) Croteau.The dolls are made out of cones covered with red gingham fabric. The dolls were made by the Spinster Club members to decorate the tables at their 5th annual Dixie Ball in May of 1943. The other two women are Katherine Foss and Penny (Mrs.H. J.) Croteau. Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Built using Weyerhaeuser's new engineered dry lumber, the new Tacoma Country & Golf Club stands serenely on the shores of American Lake in August, 1965. Its two-level, 26,000 square foot structure is surrounded by old and new growth landscaping. Fire destroyed its predecessor in 1961 as it did the original clubhouse in 1909.
