Pacific Lutheran College had just dedicated their new $200,000 Science Hall in 1947. Classes were now being taught in the building, which had modern, fully equipped labs available in the classrooms. The new building enabled students to get hands on experience in the science field. View of students in a classroom with microscopes and lab tables, the instructor is Verner L. Johnson (standing, left), Master of Science, Biology. Professor Johnson spent two years at PLC from 1946-48 following his release from service at Fort Lewis. He went on to receive a Ph.D. in zoology at Washington State College (later named Washington State University) in 1953 and joined the faculty at the school's College of Veterinary Medicine the same year. Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was named after Dr. Edward H. Todd, in honor of his many years of service to the school. College of Puget Sound had many new additions in mind for the future, hoping to make CPS one of the nicest and most modern liberal arts colleges in the Northwest. Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was designed by architects, Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and Mock & Morrison. The ground breaking ceremony was held in July 1946. The cornerstone was laid by Dr. Edward H. Todd, CPS's previous president, the building was named in his honor for his many years of service to the institution. The impressive new Science Hall at Pacific Lutheran College was in full operation, classes from the natural sciences department were being taught and departmental offices were relocated into the new building. On October 16, 1947 College of Puget Sound officials and West Disinfecting Company representatives inspected the newly refinished gym floor in the CPS Gymnasium which had originally been built in 1924. The floor had been re-done and coated with "lastincote" for durability. Left to right, A. R. Emerson, W. R. Palling, Gerard Banks, W. E. Patrick, Alice C. Bond and John Heinrick. The CPS gymnasium was now ready for indoor sports to begin.

Pacific Lutheran College was first known as Pacific Lutheran Academy between 1898 and 1919, in 1920 they changed Academy to College. In 1944 PLC officially stated they intended to build a new gymnasium, but building was delayed until the end of World War II. Pacific Lutheran College was formally founded in 1891, when the first cornerstone was laid. The school was well established within a few years, and after World War II enrollment dramatically increased and the school grounds expanded. Lea, Pearson and Richards were the architects that designed PLC's Memorial Gymnasium. The dedication ceremonies were planned for December of this year. The new Pacific Lutheran College Memorial Gymnasium was dedicated at the first basketball home game of the season. The new gym has a sound proof radio booth, electric scoreboard, portable bleachers, classrooms, laundry facilities and a trophy ornament area. Dr. Seth Eastvold (right), president of Pacific Lutheran College, along with his wife Enga and Board of Trustees chairman Dr. H.L. The building dedication ceremony will include many guest speakers and a performance by PLC's famous "Choir of the West." PLC had also recently dedicated their new student union building. Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. The building was named after Dr. Edward H. Todd, president of the college 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. (T.Times, 5/28/1947, p.7)

Dr. Todd served as president of the college for 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. Prior to becoming associated with educational work of the Methodist Church, Dr. Todd was a minister of that denomination for 19 years. ca. 1947. Construction photograph of Pacific Lutheran College's Memorial Gymnasium, ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. The gymnasium was dedicated in December of 1947 and built from a design by Lea, Pearson & Richards, architects. A new gymnasium had been planned as early as 1944, and postponed by the war. A fire of unknown origin razed the old gym in 1946 and brought new urgency to the construction of the new gymnasium. The new building was a part of the move toward capital expansion, headed up by College president Dr. Seth Eastvold, president from 1943-1962.

R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

R. Franklin Thompson, President of College of Puget Sound, is wearing a baseball mitt and standing on the C.P.S. baseball field. Thompson had a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), he had been the President at C.P.S. for many years. President Thompson liked to get involved in many of the College activities (Tamanawas, 1947).
