Lincoln High School fielded a large football team in 1951. Coached by Norm Mayer and led by right tackle and captain, Frank Paige, the Abes were runner-ups in the 9th annual Grid-Go-Round held in September, 1951. The Stadium Tigers defended their title when they defeated Lincoln 6-0. Although the varsity only won three games during the season, the highlight probably came as they tied the perenniel powerhouse Stadium team 6-6 on a foggy Thanksgiving day. According to the Lincolnian yearbook, post-season honors were awarded to Frank Paige as all-city tackle and Warren Billingsley, guard, first team all Cross-State. Lincoln High School had a large and thriving band in the 1950's. Members, pictured performing in the school auditorium in a January, 1953, photograph, were impressively dressed in dark uniforms with gold shoulder braid. Under the direction of Robert Dezell, who also directed the school orchestra, the Lincoln band performed for each basketball and football game. They, like the school orchestra, traveled to junior high schools in the area to promote Lincoln's fine musicians. The band was honored to represent the City of Tacoma and Lincoln High School in the annual Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival where they marched in the parade and participated in the band jamboree. Lincoln High School band for the 1954 school yearbook The Lincolnian. The band, under the direction of Robert Dezell, played at basketball and football games. Several groups at Stewart Junior High School, Mrs. Andres, Times. Stewart Junior High School held its eight annual May festival May 7, 1948. Queen Arlee Curtice is seated on a stool raised higher than the others who are seated on stools. The other young women are her posture duchesses. They are dressed in summer play clothes including pedal pushers, shorts, and blouses, some with midriffs exposed. Helen Andres was one of the directors of the May festival for 1948. A view of the front entry of Stadium High School. Originally built in 1891 as a hotel, the building was never completed and was converted to a high school in 1905. The school opened September 10, 1906, as Tacoma High School, and was renamed in 1913 as Stadium High School. It was designed by architect A.B. Hewitt in the French chateau style. Frederick Heath served as architect for remodeling as a high school. Towers topped with spires add decorative appeal to the exterior of the building. The steep roof has several dormers in it providing light the the upper rooms. Buildings, churches, schools, and parks made for special edition of Times, studio. TPL-1908.

Stadium High School. Designed by A. B. Hewitt in the French chateau style and perched on a bluff overlooking Commencement Bay, Stadium High School is the rebuilt shell of what was planned as a great tourist hotel by the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. The Tacoma Land Co.'s Tourist Hotel was built on a site costing $86, 000. The 240 x 250 foot five story edifice was slow in construction due to confines in financing caused by the 1893 Depression. When near completion, the $750,000 hotel was gutted by a fire October 12, 1898. Because of the high cost of rebuilding, it was abandoned as a hotel and in 1903 was proposed as a high school. The top 2 floors were removed, it was remodeled and in 1906 opened as the new Tacoma High School. The Old Woman's Gulch adjacent to the school was converted into a stadium. The name was changed to Stadium High School in 1913. The building is on the city, state and national historical registers and has been captured on film in "Ten Things I Hate About You." TPL-8382

Peter J. Bardon, the head of the Music Department of Clover Park High School, 11023 Gravelley Lake Drive S.W., conducts the school's Small Choir in March of 1948. The school's all girl group, the Nonettes, and approximately twenty selected boy's voices were combined to make up this mellow sounding, mixed group. The members of the Small Choir wore school sweaters; they did not wear choir robes until the 1950-51 school year. TPL-8796

In September of 1947, the Tacoma Athletic Commission presented Stadium High School with their first modern electric scoreboard. It was dedicated at the September 19th Grid-Go-Round at the Bowl. Pictured were Dick Sallee, on the ladder and standing, L-R, Carl Caddey, secretary of the School Board; George Weller, South Tacoma Business Men's Club; Gerry Waechter, president of TAC; and Joe Fitzpatrick, South Tacoma Kiwanis. Recognition was given during the ceremony to Henry Sallee for his work in constructing the board, Al Davies for the donation of the steel and South Tacoma Business Men's Club and Kiwanis for their financial contributions. Stadium High School and Bellarmine High School were getting ready to battle it out for the 1947 City League Title. Both football teams had done exceptionally well during this first part of the season, a tough game was anticipated. Over 16,000 rabid football fans left their turkey dinners on November 28, 1946 to attend the 25th Annual Stadium-Lincoln Thanksgiving Day game. The Stadium Tigers won 21 - 6, giving the Tigers an undefeated season, and winning for them both the Cross-State and City League Championships. (T.Times, 11/29/46, p.1; 11/30/1946, p.2)

Dissension was in the air on April 17, 1946, when approximately 50 students from Robert Gray Jr. High took to the streets to protest what they termed the "firing" of physical education teacher Victor Kovack by Principal Carroll A. Payne. The protest continued for 3 days, gathering up to 150 students demanding the removal of Principal Payne. When police forced the picketers from in front of the building, they paraded through the streets of South Tacoma. Kovack and Principal Payne had disagreed over the use of corporal punishment at the school, with Kovack opposing it. Students were advised that Mr. Kovack had been transferred, not fired, by the school district. After an investigation by the school board into the alleged physical punishments, Principal Payne was exonerated, but the regulations concerning corporal punishment in the schools were more clearly defined and published.
