An unidentified young man, possibly Jim Ladd, senior class president, cuts the ribbon on the newly completed addition to Clover Park High School while supporting himself with a crutch. The area shown is the new main entrance to the school. The addition, designed by Charles and Clarence Rueger, Architects, was completed in May of 1941 at a cost of $97,213. The greenhouse was built just outside the new biology and botony lab. The addition cost $97,213, over $39,000 from state grant, $77,000 from a bond issue and some local tax funds. Charles and Clarence Rueger, Architects, designed the structure. Although brand new, the school was already overcrowded with 770 students and a large increase in enrollment was expected. Two hundred and fifty soldiers from the 41st Division graduated on May 8, 1941 from Clover Park High School. Unable to finish high school before their National Guard unit was called up, the young men learned to soldier during the day and completed their high school classes at night. On May 8, 1941, 250 members of the 41st Division graduated in uniform from Clover Park High School. Their National Guard unit was called up for active duty before they were able to complete high school. A unique program was devised that allowed them to learn soldiering during the day and to complete their high school credits at night. (T. Times 5/8/1941, pg. 8)

Members of the 41st Division of the Washington National Guard worked on their high school studies at Clover Park High School while in uniform in May of 1941. Even though they had been called up for active duty, they took classes to enable them to graduate from high school with their regular classes. One hundred and ten Tacoma public school music students posed for a group portrait in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop before setting off for Spokane to perform at the Music Educator's National Conference of Region #1, opening March 29th, 1941. In Spokane they met and competed against 45,000 music students from Washington, Oregon and Montana. Included in the photograph are members of local middle and high school bands, orchestras, choruses and Stadium High School's 60 member Girls Glee Club. ca. 1941. This was part of the Clover Park High School football team with coach Ralph Lackey in front of a grandstand, circa 1941. Clover Park had five returning lettermen and came in third in their league with a record of five wins, two losses and one tie. Two of the wins, against Eatonville and Bellarmine, were non-league. The players were identified in the 1941 Klahowya yearbook as front row: Cliff Dawdy, Bud Schwab, Marvin Kasemeier, Don Tinkcom. Second row: DeVere Bailey, Steve Tish, Wes Saxton, Wally Hager (captain), Maxwell James, Bob Carbone. The Stadium High School wrestling team, the 1941 City prep champions, avidly watched on March 17, 1941 as Bill Bodenhammer (top) and Don Ferris engage each other in a demonstration lock. Other team members are, front row, Gene Pape (coach), Arnie Hansen, Chuck Issacs, Lee Merz, Dennis Livingston, Kiromi Kikuchi, John Collins, Phil Rogers. Back row: George Miller (manager), Herb Mims, Kenny Johnson, Kiyoshi Kinoshita, Jim Cadigan, Sid Lay, Harry Gust, Fred Hoffman, Jim Colito, Tidashi Horiki (manager) and Sam Higuchi. Stadium took the city title, and the giant Cammarano Brothers trophy that went with it by winning five of their eight scheduled matches. The 1941 Stadium High School basketball team, under the watchful eye of Coach V. G. Lowman in the dark shirt, starts out the season with a little hoop practice. For several years, Coach Lowman had produced a champion prep team and 1941 promised to be no different.

In March of 1941 the twelve members of the dancing chorus for Stadium High School's production of "The Merry Widow" posed in a Rockettes-like chorus line. This was the 29th annual production by the school's music department. A large student cast performed for the public from March 13-15 with the colorful costumes, dancing, and glorious music. The young ladies in the dancing troupe performed in four numbers. "The Merry Widow" starred Donna Mae Tjaden in the title role; Donna would later achieve Hollywood fame as the actress Janis Paige. The last city midget football championship game was played at the end of November in 1940. Stadium H.S.'s Bengal lightweights defeated the Lincoln Railsplitters 19-0 at the Lincoln Bowl. This photograph was taken in front of the scoreboard at Stadium H. S., not at Lincoln after the game. This team was the last Midget (132 pounds and under) team that Stadium had. Thirteen girls show a little leg during a competition in the Lincoln High School gymnasium on February 21 1941. They are competing in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest. The top ten contestants will also be awarded "model" roles in the school's upcoming original musical comedy "Of Men and Models," to be presented in May at the school. Thirteen Lincoln High School girls, wearing bathing suits and high heels, clustered around an unidentified male student in February of 1941. The girls, who were participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest at the school, were also hoping to be cast in the school Music Department production of "Of Men and Models". The student written and scored musical comedy, to be directed by student LeRoy "Lee" Hale, told the story of a football hero who inherited a 5th Avenue dress shop. Standing in the back are: (l to r) Betty Snyder, Florence Anderson, Carol Lind, Lois Dahl, Matilda Drennen, Mary Sandford, Doris Davey and Mary Anne Wilkins. The other five girls are: (l to r) Janet Wolters, Martha Farrell, Garnet Thompson, Lawauna Dickes and Harriet Sommervell. Contestants had to be at least 5'4" tall. Fifty-four girls tryout for parts in the Lincoln High School opera "Of Men and Models," an original musical comedy directed by student LeRoy (Lee) Hale. The top ten contestants in the pictured "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest on February 21, 1941 will be chosen to play models in the production. Lincoln students wrote the music and lyrics for 21 original songs. The show premiered in Tacoma on May 8, 9 and 10. Hale became music director for "The Dean Martin Show" during its television run from 1965-74. (Lincolnian, 1941, pp. 25, 83).
